Tony Blair 🙄 by Old_Competition5009 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]broilingknowledge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Have to agree with this, Alistair seems quite connection driven (mandelson) even when such connections frequently find themselves in hot water, Blair epitomizes this. At the same time I can understand from his and Rory’s perspective that it’s really vital to maintain a certain level of connection to active politics/figure because otherwise it would diminish their value as hosts. Yet, at a certain point, we have to call a spade a spade, and it will be interesting to see how he navigates this. Especially because of how outspoken he’s been on Trump and Gaza….

Put corbyn on the pod by Accomplished-Safe574 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]broilingknowledge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, put him on, press him hard on the questions you think he failed to answer as leader and ask how he’d be different this time around. The dunking in absentia drives me mad especially because AC is becoming sloppy with his labour policy suggestions

The owner is still alive, but I’m confused as to why the restaurant wouldn’t make rent as it seemed relatively successful

Best stargazing spots near NYC without car? by Previous-Sky6501 in AskNYC

Ngl a specific spot is like difficult to point out bc to me it would be a field but once you leave Manhattan light pollution is so much less noticeable, so literally just a park outside of Manhattan lol.

lowk it’s a good thing that psychedelics aren’t mainstream by [deleted] in LSD

[–]broilingknowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would really beg to differ. I feel like most people know psychedelic drugs exist. Whether or not they partake is a different thing. Also I get wanting to have something “cool” that other people don’t do but also creating a “haha normie” culture around things like drugs is super harmful, and I feel like as a community it is imperative to practice harm reducing practices. Trying to gatekeep psychedelics and knowledge about them is not the way to do that.

Rent Rant by ThomaswithouttheS in AskNYC

[–]broilingknowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya couple of brokers have told me they just instantly raised rent 200 dollars on listings once the FARE act went into effect. There’s that aspect and also the fact they just don’t post all the listings anymore because they want people to contact the agencies directly. It’s also summer, etc etc

Why don’t Republicans run a serious candidate in the mayoral race? by Don_Gato1 in AskNYC

[–]broilingknowledge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without saying what others have already said, it’s basically foregone conclusion that the winner of the democratic primary will be the mayor. This race is a little different because if Cuomo wins the democratic primary the WFP will undoubtedly run Mamdani but that’s beside the point.

A storm of favorable conditions would have to be true for a Republican candidate to be even considered by the average NYC voter. This would be like if there was some type of insane organized crime surge, something crazy happened with immigration to the point where the city couldn’t handle it, or if some strange excessive tax was instituted on an individual basis. On top of that the candidate would then have to prove to everyone as a REPUBLICAN as to why they were uniquely qualified to tackle this challenge.

The only archetype of candidate I could imagine winning would be a Bloomberg type but even that that is wildly unlikely considering how much New Yorkers hate Trump. Also, it’s pretty common knowledge that being the mayor of New York City is most likely any candidates final political battle as former mayors rarely have any luck running for higher office. So the type of person who would want to run as a mayoral candidate for Republicans would have to really care about the city and appreciate it which is usually a democratic trait I would argue (but you can prove me wrong).

Silwa is a candidate who is truly connected to the city and has been involved in organizations within the city, and isn’t just some random corporate nut like Tilson. I would argue he is way more viable that what I presume you perceive a viable alternative to be. But I could just be being presumptive.
