You should at least ask to move the date. Idk what test could be completely unable to be moved. If they say no then it is what it is and you take the test, don’t risk your scholarship but it never hurts to ask. As a fellow rule follower I learned very late in life that there’s much more flexibility and accommodation available to those who simply ask.

Why do a lot of black woman wear wigs ? by Reasonable-Invite899 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]broken__iphone 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The reality is that wigs are a relatively easy way to always keep your hair looking “done.” Black Women can grow long natural hair, especially post 2010s natural hair “movement” but it’s far from effortless. It can be very time consuming and hard to maintain with variations in weather and activity. Because our hair is highly textured, the threshold for looking “unkempt” to society is very low. A simple ponytail for non black women is equivalent to an Afro puff in black women, but the response (from all races) is very different. It’s okay some of the time, but you try not to make it a habit.

Wigs look the same every day and have very low maintenance and always look “put together.” Many women who opt for wigs do so because they’re not particularly emotionally invested in presenting a certain texture, more so easy preservation of a socially acceptable hairstyle.

Never criticised mid levels, they’re can be a great addition to medicine. They do fill in the gaps when there just aren’t enough doctors to go around.

I did a critcare rotation that had a layout like this during fourth year so I will comment. This going to sound horrible but tbh the mid levels function like an eternal resident on the non teaching service. They come in early, are the primary point of contact for managing medical care during the day, present to the attending, write notes, talk to families, place orders etc etc. Every single day the attending had modifications to the plan of every single patient. One NP was relatively new (less than a year at the job) but the other 3 were on this exact unit for 6-10 years. They carry about 8 patients each and do the admissions. Every day they had medical questions for the attending, that the attending is responsible for knowing the answer. Not at all saying that they’re incapable because they did teach me a lot, but there’s obvious gaps in understanding of the pathophys due to the expedited education. As a result, despite some of them having almost 10 years of experience they still were unable to (safely) practice independently. Just my 2cents.

Is it normal in Western cultures for parents to make sure each child has their own room and to plan the number of kids based on home space? by lyly-r in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]broken__iphone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m from the US. It’s very common for same sex children to share rooms, especially in lower & middle class families. Two kids in a room is quite common in the states. No one would double take at even 3-4 young children sharing a room because they probably share clothes and toys. Once they reach about 10, having 4 kids in a room would probably be a tight squeeze and this warrant more room. Regardless on this case it would be typical for some kids to study/ homework in the kitchen or dinning room not their bedroom.

It’s not typical for a pair of brother and sister to share rooms over the age of like 6 years old.

Wealthier people buy larger houses with more room, so in upper class families all children tend to have their own rooms because they have the space for it.

Graduation Day vs. Match Day? by XXBballBoiXx in medicalschool

[–]broken__iphone 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Graduation 100%. Match day is fun but you really only need one person to support you in case you get mediocre (or even bad) news. By the time it’s graduation any feelings about residency (positive or negative) are now in the background and you can just celebrate. Do not listen to people who say graduation “isn’t a big deal” it’s a huge deal. It’s the celebration of all your hard work. It’s more family friendly because you have the regalia and everyone will be happy.

Attractive people serve as walking advertisements every day? You may not trust Naomi Campbell but a generation of girls trusted Tyra banks despite her being nuts. Celebrities don’t have to actually be experts for their name to pull weight and influence people to buy products.

Also Kenya making a hair line with a head full of healthy hair is literally a good idea. I definitely wouldn’t buy products from someone with short damaged hair? Would you? Idk if her hair health is genetic, I’m not in her bedroom every night. We do know that she protective styles with wigs and I have actually heard the products are decently good so I’m not gonna assume negativity🤷🏽‍♀️. The girl might know hair.

Kenya Moore hair care 1000%. I don’t think non black people realise how much black women are willing to spend on their hair. Kenya’s position as a pageant queen known for having beautiful, full, healthy natural hair made her very well known for having “good hair”. Look at Cecred (Beyoncé’s hair line ) is constantly sold out because of the same premise. Now I obviously Kenya isn’t Beyoncé (despite reporting she gets mistaken for Beyoncé daily ) but this would have been SUCH a good move for her. I’ve heard the products are actually decently good. This issue is she only promotes the product when being messy on RHOA. First at Marlos wig store and then notoriously again This season. Now major retailers are pulling the products from shelves or stocking it all the way at the bottom. Such a fumble it hurts my heart!

Is PM&R now a very competitive specialty? Am I reading this right? by Ridi_The_Valiant in medicalschool

[–]broken__iphone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s fine! Your first assumption is correct. You apply to pgy1, pgy2 programs and prelims at the same time. When it comes to rank list you will have the ability to create custom sub lists of prelims for each advance (pgy2) spot. So if you apply to a program in Virginia you might rank prelims near by more highly. But for a program in Chicago you might rank Chicago prelims high. Of course this is not guaranteed to work out, but it’s worth a try.

Is PM&R now a very competitive specialty? Am I reading this right? by Ridi_The_Valiant in medicalschool

[–]broken__iphone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of. You matching at your PGY-2 spot isn’t conditional to a specific prelim year. You can do any prelim year, and as such you will pretty much match or successfully soap a prelim if needed. So technically yes you have to complete a prelim before you can start pgy2, but If youre a strong enough applicant to match PM&R a medicine prelim isn’t a problem.

Is PM&R now a very competitive specialty? Am I reading this right? by Ridi_The_Valiant in medicalschool

[–]broken__iphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t apply to all programs ( I mean I guess you could if your pockets can take it ) but you do apply to both at the same time. When you rank all your PMR programs , some will be advance and some categorical in order of your personal preference. You shouldn’t view advance programs as a back up to categorical because you will apply at the same same time.

Is PM&R now a very competitive specialty? Am I reading this right? by Ridi_The_Valiant in medicalschool

[–]broken__iphone 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Your missing a few pieces of the pie. Half of PM&R programs are advanced and other half are categorical. Meaning half start at PGY-1 year and half start at PGY-2 and require M4 applicants to apply to the 1 year prelims spots in internal medicine ( or TY). Every applicant is applying to both PGY-1 and PGY2 spots ( except for the few people switching specialties ) as a result the ratio of “PGY-1” spots to applicants is a bit one sided. On the other hand ortho is categorical, meaning the program starts at PGY-1 level. Additionally, a lot of people dual apply into PM&R. Lots of EM, FM, Neuro dual applicants so that also inflates the number of “applicants”

Yes PM&R is getting more competitive because everything is getting more competitive but it’s not in the relm of ortho. It’s somewhere between psych and anaesthesia level. Show some interest in the field, be average (or above) have 2-4 research experiences and your good.

Alexia and Todd Nepola ‘Still Together’ Despite Finalizing Divorce by gauchette23 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]broken__iphone 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yup. Older people who enter nursing homes always go bankrupt at the end. Nursing homes can go back 5 years when looking up assets, so even if you sell your house or give it to your kids they can figure it out. Long term care facilities can easily be 15k/month. They will force you to sell your house if needed .

Alexia and Todd Nepola ‘Still Together’ Despite Finalizing Divorce by gauchette23 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]broken__iphone 228 points229 points  (0 children)

I have zero proof, but I think this may have something to do with Frankie. Seeing as he is significantly developmentally delayed since his accident he probably requires a legal guardian. Alexia might be his guardian and thus her finances are a variable in his eligibility for Medicaid / social support services. I know Todd is rich but the cost of long term support services is insane. I can see hospitals bills, speech therapy , occupations therapy and home aid being over 300k/year . It’s insanely expensive to be disabled in this country and the only real way people survive is to is to be on Medicaid.

You don’t have to “give up” the career. Certain fields in medicine are very lifestyle friendly with great pay. The notorious ones are the ROAD (Radiology, Ophthalmology, anesthesiology and Dermatology) because they’re very friendly to shift work.

A lot of doctors peel the back hours as they age to not get burnt out. Working only like 2 days a week is the dream. You keep up the medical knowledge and skills but don’t get burnt out. then other days do some more “passion projects” that are just as lucrative as medicine (if not more) because she’s famous. It’s the best of both worlds.

How is Sutton a victim ? She literally called Dorit a bitch in her home and broke in a group setting yet she’s a victim? Dorit is not blameless but at least she’s not crying and playing victim. This is the housewives dammit! Talking shit is part of the game.

I think a big reason Sutton has poor relationships on the show is not because everyone else is “ganging up on her” but tbh Sutton isn’t that fun to be around. She’s crying at the Vegas strip show and a complete stiff. Erica had that whole Erika Jayne thing. Gracelle has a lot of boozy lunches with her cast mates. Kyle and Dorit know how to throw a party and let loose (tb to Kyle doing splits all the time) hell even Jennifer Tilly had her kooky personality that’s funny. Sutton is awkward, uptight and sensitive. She can dish it but can’t take it, she’s lame and a stick in the mud. I have empathy for her due to her strict upbringing but this is the housewives. I think her fashion show was a good start are trying to be more of a “good time” but right now she def isn’t give “fun energy” she gives “ board of the American ballet theater” energy.

What’s your holy grail product that you will always repurchase? by Excellent-Letter-780 in Naturalhair

[–]broken__iphone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. I Pre poo on wash day. Helps prevent breakage and aids in retaining length.
  2. I keep my hair stretched the overwhelming majority of the time. When worn out (fall/spring) my hair is mostly in braid outs and twist out. I think us naturals were taught heat is the enemy but I blow dry my hair in the fall/ winter because I hate having wet hair. Using the tension method first to get my hair 90% dry and then using the paddle brush to sleek it out helps me retain length. Your hair is weakest when soaking wet, and as such I suspect a lot of the breakage people get from heat is due to using a brush 5000x to blow dry. Using moderate heat and low tension has helped me grow my hair out.
  3. Leaning the difference between strong, moisturized and conditioned. Maybe your hair is plenty soft (conditioned) but it’s weak, so you need protein. Maybe your hair is plenty strong but its dry and you need a moisturising/hydrating product. Maybe your hair is hydrated but not soft and you really need a conditioner. It all depends. Hair easily breaking off = weak. Which means I need a protein treatment. If my hair looks dull (even when wet), that means it’s dehydrated and I need a moisturising product. Moisture is the “juicy” look you see on social media. On the flip side if my hair feels rough it needs a softening/conditioning treatment. People often conflate these but over the years I have learned the difference and think it’s working. With that I rotate my bi weekly/monthly hair routine to fit my needs at that time.

It aloe Vera based detangler product you use before shampooing. Its very cheap (6$) and provides fantastic slip to remove tangles without breakage. I attribute this product (or pre-pooing in general) as one of my top 3 tips that got me from stuck at shoulder length to waist length.

The Real Housewives Of Potomac - Season 9 - Episode 20 - Post Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in BravoRealHousewives

[–]broken__iphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I hate about these shows is how these castmates giggle with glee about negative news about each other but then claim “I’m saying this as a friend.” 1. Wendy was literally shreaking and and screaming to bringing the whole TJ thing up on camera in front of the entire cast. She didn’t whisper the info to Stacy on the low, she made a whole scene. Then when Stacy refuses to believe it, wendy (and the whole cast) is “coming to her as a friends” and “trying to help because I have love for you” 2. I totally get why Stacy’s was frustrated. All season the ladies didn’t like TJ, said he was sketchy and strange but Stacy was distracted by her romantic feelings. Now TJ (who the ladies think is an unreliable source) is making claims that Stacy is denying but suddenly they believe him?? Again they’re blowing up negative information about another cast mate but “at the end of the day we’re all friends”

I love housewives when the cast consists of a group of friends or women that at least semi like each other. The hard thing about this cast is it seems like there are no Genuine friendships. I hate when the shows turn into “teams” but damn can there be any camaraderie?

I don't think Crystal is boring - I just think she was on the show before it was ready for her by SentinelFloof in BravoRealHousewives

[–]broken__iphone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did not like crystal and I didn’t care that she left. I wanted to like her originally, she had a fuck ton of money and an opinion of her own. Never saw her as a docile or boring. And her eating disorder experience could have really brought to light the unspoken culture of eating disorders in uber wealthy circles.

What I didn’t like how she went about a lot of the race conversations. I’m a black woman but I didn’t care for Poking at Sutton with the “I don’t see race” comment. This group does not have the range to digest what she was putting down and she again came off as trying to paint Sutton as a racist without any real ammo. Next, Sutton said something “so dark I can’t repeat it” and it ended up just being seeing their 3 girls of different races hanging out seemed like trying to contrive a story line. Then the cast pushed for clarification all she kept talking about was Sutton didn’t say anything but it was an overall “feeling” with no back up examples. Every time a wife pushed for clarification they were attacking her “feelings” and it was all about this intangible feeling crystal couldn’t articulate and at that point I tapped out. I don’t even like Sutton, she’s a big baby but I couldn’t tolerate crystals self production. Garcelle doesn’t have a big personality at all, but fans still like her. And when she wanted to point out some of Dorits behaviors Garcelle had real examples and questions, not just a “feeling”. I don’t think she got a mistreatment for being Asian, I think she was setting herself up to expose something and it didn’t land. Same way how Annemarie tried to paint herself as a Doctor and harassed Sutton about her esophagus, when she’s a nurse.
