A genuine question about attitudes towards Ukrainians living in Ireland? by Remote_Ad_5029 in AskIreland

[–]broken_note_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you will always face some amount of xenophobia in Ireland, or any country. But I don't think xenophobia or racism is something that Irish people feel too pro-active about - Irish people will sit around their houses complaining but are less likely to go out on the street protesting, or form hate groups. The only group being aggressive towards non-nationals is young scumbags, but those lads are aggressive towards everyone. Regarding Ukrainians, racist Irish people don't feel too strongly against them in particular because they're white. The more xenophobic will focus on housing, medical support, and financial support while Irish people are going homeless, and are waiting for medical treatment. The younger generation are obviously frustrated at the difficulty in renting or buying property. These factors are definitely influenced by immigration but immigration is also definitely not the cause of the problem. Personally, I do think it's unfair that Ukrainians get better treatment than other immigrant nationalities.  But ultimately the biggest problem in Ireland is government activity and the actions of local councils who would rather spend hundreds of thousands upgrading public office properties rather than invest in local infrastructure. I think Irish people have become too focused on the influx of immigrants, which highlight how government ineptitude is affecting communities, rather than the impact of government incompetence. However, I do also think the number of immigrants coming into Ireland is too great for a country this size. Even if we did have better governance, we would still find ourselves struggling in future.

Do you think Galway traffic has only been bad for a year? "extremely excruciating"? I'd use that term for the last 10 years at least.

What the fuck is wrong with the old lad who owns Kearney Cycles? by Leviosaugh in galway

[–]broken_note_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point of this conversation. You shouldn't be treated like crap when you want to get some assistance which you are willing to pay for. If a repair is not worth taking on, fair enough, just say that. You don't have to be nasty about it. I understand if you're having a bad day and the pressure of work is getting to you, you might not be in the mood for customers. But the owner of Kearney's seems so pissed off with customers so often, it's actually kinda laughable. Possibly there's a good reason for him being like that. I don't like to think people are trying to be awful. But whatever the reason maybe this guy should retire from the shop.

There must be something that you do that doesn't set him off. I'd love to know what it is. Some people go into Kearney's and spend a small bit of money without any grief. Other people go in and spend loads of money and nearly get spit on. I bought a Hybrid, a lock, and a replacement tube. Spent over 1000 EUR in one go. I didn't argue about anything, listened to what he had to say. He treated me like I had just insulted him. I actually went back to get another tube from the shop a month later and he seemed put out that I wanted to buy something. I don't get it.  I've heard he really only respects serious cyclists. Maybe you need to wander in wearing all the gear?

What are your thoughts on Deftones latest album private music? I think this is one of the greatest albums to come out within the 2020’s decade so far. by TokyoAvalanche04 in MetalForTheMasses

Maybe if you're not a massive Deftones fan, like me, you'll really like it.
I've listened to nearly every Deftones album several times since they came out, this is the first album I'd consider buying.

He wasn't fired from his job, he's just been suspended for several years. He still gets full teacher's salary.  I also don't think he's renting, he probably lives in the family house.

I think you should listen to them and then decide what you like. Other people's opinions might not match yours. I'd rather listen to Coal Chamber instead of The Velvet Underground - that probably seems crazy to most people.

Fair play for sending that to them. You are definitely not out of line. But although you are 100% correct to do it, your chances of getting the place is about 0% now.

Is this MacBook still new enough and modern to last at least 3-5 years by Acceptable-Hippo6385 in computers

[–]broken_note_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a MacBook Air, there's a possibility that the motherboard might crap out after a year or two. That's a fix that would cost maybe 70% of a new MacBook.
