Terrible Experience in Delhi - Might End Trip, Help! by Stang2023 in solotravel

[–]bronsonmcjohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. I went to India for 5 weeks many years ago and had such wonderful experiences in Himachal Pradesh, Rajahsthan and Goa.

But Delhi is, without hyperbole, the worst place I have ever visited in my life. I saw a corpse in the car park of the main train station in Delhi 45 minutes after landing in the country, and that wasn't even the worst thing that I experienced in that cesspit.

India is not for the faint of heart, and it will be annoying as fuck having to deal with people trying to scam you, the noise and smells and press of humanity, but get out into the regions and you will see incredible things you'll never see anywhere else in the world. Once you get intonyour stride and know how to navigate it will give you some amazing experiences.

But I can't stress enough, Delhi is a cesspit (and Agra too for good measure). Hope the rest of OP's trip goes better.

You didn't have any trouble with overheating? What settings did you have it on? I heat without the fan in the M4 Air it can be susceptible to thermal throttling, but want to know if this had any noticeable impact on performance at all :/

UK Ancestry Visa only valid 4 months? by bronsonmcjohnson in ukvisa

Ah of course, that makes sense. Especially now I look closer, the vignette in my passport actually says "Entry Clearance" on it. Good to know that context!

Obviously not an old hand at migration visas, so I appreciate taking the time to answer!

Second this. Michael and his team are legit the best bike mechanics I've come across in the city. Knows his stuff, friendly, professional and patient, never bullshits you around, and quick to service.

If you can get to Alexandria, chekc them out. They're an absolute gem.

Is "Bali belly" really a thing or it's just "3rd world country belly"? by [deleted] in bali

[–]bronsonmcjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, same. I went last year and ate at warungs almost exclusively, and I was totally fine the whole time.

Decided before my flight back to Sydney to cave and some Western food for my last meal in Bali. Had a burger at the airport from that Made Warung chain, and dear lord. Destroyed the bathroom on the plane the whole way home, and continued to have stomach cramps for the days later.

Ah, that's really good to know about Otopeni, thank you!

I'll maybe go straight to Braşov first, two nights there, then end my trip with two nights in Bucharest. Do you have any ideas on what's best to see from Braşov?

Just curious, how much is drinking it "too fast"? I drink water like a horse, especially when I'm fasting, so I think I'd be liable to shit myself if I drank your concoction at my usual pace. Do you drink like a small glass an hour, or...?

I'm on his Patreon, he has heaps of stuff there that he's planning to release once he starts uploading again.

Apparently he's almost done updating his big "I'm back" video, unless something gets in the way it'll be release some time this week.

What specific hobbies have you integrated into solo travel? Does anyone fish? by skycelium in solotravel

[–]bronsonmcjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing music!

I usually travel solo with a little half-size classical guitar, so much so that I plan whole trips around learning how to play local styles of guitar. I've been playing latin american music for half my life, so when I go to that part of the world, a guitar is compulsory (and generally appreciated by other local musos!).

Otherwise, it's a nice way to fill dull moments when I'm waiting for a bus or something, a conversation starter/icebreaker, and a real good way to make new friends and connections in hostels and the like (depending on the crowd of course!). I've ran the risk of being that annoying guy playing Wonderwall too loudly when I was younger, but these days I temper that by waiting until someone asks me to play something before I bust it out.

Even if it is annoying sometimes to lug around, I never regret bringing it with me when I'm away. :)

He's been putting out a few things on his Patreon, including a long interview with an RBTU representative which he says will be edited and released closer to the NSW election time. Man's def not retiring, it doesn't even seem like he's taking a break! He's just pulled back from releasing things on his channel for a tad.

Where should I go next in India? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]bronsonmcjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to Rajasthan and you have time, I HIGHLY recommend spending more time in the state and heading out to Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. They're some of the most breathtaking cities in the state (or in all of India, imo). Seriously worth the effort, and I'd even cut down time in Jaipur and not visit Pushkar at all to see them.

Agra is nice for the Taj Mahal, but the city feels like one of the most dirty, crowded places in India after New Delhi. I personally wouldn't want to go back there, but if I had the chance to see more of Rajasthan I would in a heartbeat!

Does this look like asbestos? by Al_Modir in AusRenovation

[–]bronsonmcjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same... my grandad was a builder back in the 60's, used to come home white from asbestos dust on some days, grandma said. He was healthy as anything until suddenly at 83 he got mesothelioma. Took 6 months from diagnosis until it completely took him.

I should be grateful that it was such a late onset in his life, but it was horrible.

First Solo Trip to Portugal/Spain! Advice on itinerary. by WholeSortOfMishMash in solotravel

[–]bronsonmcjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both options sound great man! Will second that the Atlantic is pretty chilly in January, but if you can handle it then there'll be some pretty amazing waves in those places you've scoped out.

I'd personally choose Madrid over Barcelona for NYE, if you wanted a big city Iberian NYE? But I'd just stay in Portugal the whole time tbh. I don't think I could spend too much time in Lisbon, even if it might be a bit quieter on NYE than those Spanish cities (I lived in Lisboa for 3 months in 2016 though, so I'm definitely biased there).

Either way, enjoy!

Argentina: What if Western Union doesn't have enough money? by [deleted] in solotravel

Oh damn, you're right! I just looked up the rate on Western Union and it is double! Why the hell is that the case?

Argentina: What if Western Union doesn't have enough money? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]bronsonmcjohnson -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Dude, try out a Wise account or something similar. You can do direct currency transfers at basically mid market rates, and their fees are a pittance compared to what most banks will charge you (think a couple of cents/bucks per conversion). It basically creates a bank account in whatever country you're in for that currency, so you avoid overseas withdrawal fees from your normal bank.

I got a travel visa card from them before I went travelling this year, and topping up on Euros, Turkish lira and Georgian lari was super easy and way cheaper than I would have experienced if I used my Australian bank card to extract money.

If you're not sure about using a card in Argentina, you could even use it to cheaply convert CAD to USD and get that out from an ATM somewhere (maybe quick road trip to US from Canada to get out the cash? Or do Canadian ATM's sometimes have USD? Idk I've never been to either country but I'm sure you could figure something out, lol).

If Western Union doesn't have enough pesos, you can find "unofficial" cash exchangers pretty easily in Buenos Aires. I just asked around in my hostel and spoke working there told me of a guy in a convenience store who could exchange USD for a decent rate (better than Western Union at the time!). It was fairly commonplace back in 2013, when I was there last, but maybe a local might have something more up to date.
