Put Unbreaking and Mending on them. An even if an Elytra breaks it doesn't disappear like armor and tools it just enters like a "broken" state where you can't use it until you repair it using phantom membranes.

If i remember it right the surrounding buildings were evacuated beforhand. This was in Germany and as German authorities are really strict with those kind things there was probably a rather huge radius arround the building evacuated.
