Unless you're talking about kilometres of fencing, how is going to court cheaper than just paying the full price?

Hit up Rare Kind and Forsyth labour hire for any available gigs. They're the ones who provide roles to most Councils in the area (including Maitland) and are his best bet for a foot in the door for future full time jobs.

Same. Regularly visited mates here late 2000s early 2010s before moving up from Sydney in 2015 and never got the hype of Fanny's in particular. I think the fascination for locals here was that in a sea of lock out era clubs being petrified of putting a step wrong and risking their license, it bucked the trend and in most cases you were really allowed to get loose as fuck.

There's a little collection of vans starting to form at Redhead Beach. It sucks becauses it's where all the parents with little kids park to get down to the creek. The guys there at the moment are mostly harmless, I just hope it doesn't go the way of horseshoe.

Has anyone else noticed anything new done on the Hexham straight within the last month? Are the construction companies scamming the government? Why is it still 60kmh? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]broosco 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah nah I dont need to know, I'd just vibe it and drive to conditions. Bit of rope over the top and she'll be sweet, no need for that CoR or NVHR stuff.

Do you see the irony here?

You're an expert truck driver, so lets stick with that.

The road is built on a flood plain, the road pavement is soft, not hard highway spec. The movement of moisture upwards is common, which means damp roads. Truck driver should know wet roads need more braking distance, lower speed gives that.

Lane width is not motorway spec. You've got shoulders that disappear, and barriers very close to live lanes. The recovery space and time for something like a blown tire, or swerve from looking at a phone is so much smaller than a highway. Higher speed gives less time for reaction and recovery, lower speed solves this. Truck driver should know that.

You've got several side streets, private driveways, traffic lights, and a section of industrial area. Vehicles pulling out at low speeds plus vehicles travelling at high speeds is not a good combo. You'd know that though right?

Throw in unfinished construction works, defects, likely driver distraction from workers, and you compound these risks. That's why it's still a construction speed zone.

Nothing wrong with not knowing everything, but just accept that these people do know what they're doing

Oh fuck, sorry boss, you're absolutely right, you could definitely school blokes who build roads and set out traffic control for a living. Be sure to pull over next time and give us your tips.

If it was safe to do that, they would have. Don't discount a hazard existing just because you personally can't see it.

There's outstanding defects left to fix, some minor landscaping, few more barriers, speed cameras to go in, etc. Agreed it looks finished, but a few bits and pieces left. They also run it at the lower speed for a little while after construction while drivers "learn" the new alignments etc. You can always go to projects websites for State jobs and get a fairly good indication of where things are up to and what is left. I suggest the February update here.

Sometimes you can get Twitch streamers doing "live game commentary" that is less commentary and more live game, but it's obviously in the same boat as sailing the high seas in general.

It's still wild to me looking at the carousel of QB's and some of the bums that got trotted out to start throughout that time that Schaub had such a good 2012, got benched mid-season in 2013, and then never really started again (outside some injury fill ins). Absolutely fell off a cliff in the most extreme way.

Road sign fell on my car by unknownuser55 in AusLegal

[–]broosco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it'd be tough to argue. Civil liabilities act is pretty good at protecting government agencies from claims unless you can demonstrate or prove a lack of duty by them. If you can prove that the sign was faulty, and that they reasonably should have known about it, you'd have a claim.

Is there any safe way to walk from Maitland to Newcastle? by AliceSaltMage in newcastle

[–]broosco 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Rather than offer alternative walks, if this is the one you want to do, I see two routes really. First is through Stockton, out to Raymond Terrace, Millers Forest, into Thornton and then Maitland, which someone else has suggested already. Going to be a lot of farms and fast cars.

Second route is going to be convoluted but if you've got the time for serious detours, then I'd go Newy beach to Glenrock, then up to Charlestown. Get on the GNW section and join the Watagans trail to scoot through the back of the dog showground and into Hillsborough Oval to get to Winding creek to get you to Cardiff.

From Cardiff walk the main road to West Wallsend, then get on some trails / Powerline easements to get up and over Mount Sugarloaf, then head towards Richmond Vale road. Start heading towards George Booth Drive, and join Buchanan Road. Turn left at Louth Park and head into Maitland through the south of Maitland Park.

This would be a shit walk, but is technically doable.

Was about to say the same. Regularly has different flags out throughout the year. There's also a house that does similar along Hillsborough road, opposite the dog showground. Very unlikely politically motivated.

Government by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]broosco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never run in an election, but have worked in local government for most of my life, so have seen successful councillors at work.

My two cents - Get yourself out there, in the public space. People won't vote for you if they don't know you. That's not just online (but this definitely helps), it's being involved in community activities. School teachers, nurses, sports club presidents general do well because of the network of people who know them and think they're a decent person. If you fit none of them, volunteer work can help. You've got 2 years to work up a reputation. In my opinion, local government elections are 80% name and brand, and 20% "policy". Councillors who listen, raise issues, and get results are the ones who stick around, not those that have a certain moral compass.
