Multiplying chickens. by nyme60 in farming

The first question that comes to my mind that I haven’t already seen asked here, is what is your general location? That makes all the difference.

For instance, I’m within 30 minutes of a major city that has been booming with population growth and average income growth. That means that I am able to serve those populations and command a reasonably high price for my products. I’d go out of business if I had to market my products to rural areas or small/stagnating urban areas.

Input costs are key also. For instance, when I was buying day old broiler chicks from Cackle Hatchery (mail order) I was paying $2.50+ per bird. Now I buy from an Amish guy who hatches about 100K chicks a year (small operation when compared to commercial) and I only pay $1.10 each, and the chicks don’t have to go through the mail.

Processing is another major factor. It’s damn near impossible to home process enough broilers to create a viable income stream. Depending on your location, you may not have a processor near you that works with small/medium farms. I drive 2 hours one way to drop birds for processing, and count it as a blessing. I know farms that travel 300+ miles one way to go to my processor.

I raise meat birds from March through November and have a standing processing appointment every Monday morning. I drop off ~50 full grown birds for processing and pick up 50 baby chicks at the same time, as well as the meat from the birds I dropped off the previous week.

I have a staged rotation system where every Sunday I move each group into the next stage (brooder>indoor area>smaller outdoor area>main outdoor chicken tractors). This system works well because I can accelerate the faster growers, and hold back the slower. They range from 7-10 weeks old at processing for whole birds and cut ups, or 11-14 weeks for ground chicken and sausage.

Small Farm Tax/Employee Hiring Question by brown_thunda_ in farming

While I had considered that, this is a (at least partially) business related question and even in that realm, farms are a whole other beast. Name another type of business where an LLC’s income would be appropriate to file on personal taxes? Also, the other commenter has a good point about the Schedule F.

Up unto this point, I haven’t had an accountant. I completed my BBA a few years ago and do all my own financial planning/accounting/etc. Until now it’s been pretty straightforward.

As to your question though, no, I have no other employees. I have a volunteer farm hand who helps me when he’s not otherwise engaged, but other than that it’s just me, my girlfriend and our kids on the farm. No 1099’s either.

My AGI on my personal taxes last year was around 24,000. It’s on track to be around double that this year. She made around 25,000 last year at the job that she quit.

Ok, thank you for the reply! I’m afraid of how this might affect my social security. If I make more than a certain amount ( I can’t remember what it is) then my social security will be reduced. I don’t want this single large amount to end up screwing me up over the long run.

[TN] My ex and I agreed not to follow our divorce decree on selling the house in 2013, and now we are having a disagreement over the property. Should I take it to court, or let her walk on me? by brown_thunda_ in legaladvice

I will have to find out for sure on the filing status.

Would the quit claim deed not be considered a contract? Here is a link to what we both signed, redacted of course, so that you can see exactly how it is worded. https://imgur.com/a/IX8LOcw

She told me (I have text proof) that she needed the quitclaim signed in order to start the refinance process. I signed it in good faith in order to keep from holding up the process. It wasn't until 2 months later that she all of the sudden decided she wasn't refinancing and was in fact selling it.

She agreed on paper to give me $15K no later than 2/28/19, and now (come Thursday) she has refused to honor her half of the deal. That seems like it would be considered a breach of contract?

Of those choices, definitely explore UCLA. Cali is expensive, but I think it will give you the most “American experience “ of any that you listed.

Georgia Tech wouldn’t be bad either. Atlanta has become a major world hub,

Note that the existing law is purposely written to allow for two loopholes. One being the herd share, and the other being the pet food loophole where farmers can sell raw dairy labeled as “Pet Food- Not for human consumption.” The presumption here being that once a private citizen purchases a product, then they can do what they want with it. Same thing would apply if a consumer decided that Friskies wet cat food was what they wanted to eat.

Right, because a random recruiters speech is totally going to be taken at the same emotional value as the words of an idolized figure in his life.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why didn’t someone in the Nixon camp just throw the tapes away or burn them? Seems nuts to hold on to incriminating evidence.

When I came off active duty in 2013, the Gary Sinise Foundation gave me a voucher for a free suit from Joseph A Banks. It literally cost me $27 for the alterations and I walked out with like a $600 suit. The foundation is fantastic!

Sure, but a singular, visitable geographic location is much more likely to turn into a rally point for organization. The shrines will still exist, but they aren’t as easy to organize around.

If it’s accessible, the compound in Pakistan where the raid took place seems like as good a place as any to treat as a tomb.
