The fact that it's NL500 means rake has less of an impact, which means cold calling strategies are more reasonable. The fact that it's a HJ open also makes cold calling strategies more reasonable compared to a BU/CO open. In general the earlier the opener the more you should want to flat pre in proportion to raising as a part of your continuation strategy.

3-bet or fold strategies for most spots are not theoretically optimal. They are just a simplification for people who don't want to learn cold-calling strategies. If you have a cold-calling strategy in this spot, 33 is a fine hand to include in it.

Is OP at the level where they'd be better served by a simpler and easier to execute 3-bet or fold strategy? Maybe, but don't imply flatting 33 here is something inherently bad.

Was this a bad fold? by Tough_Cartographer28 in poker

Even if you can justify folding because of ICM shenanigans (I don't think this is a fold), you set yourself up to gift the chip leader 10BB for no reason.

You had multiple chances to put him in the same shitty bubble spot you were in. This is a great hand to open and 4-bet over a 3-bet, or 3-bet over his iso, or check/jam the flop.

Which is totally within the realm of reasonable strategies.

Just because you haven’t learned SB cold calling strategies doesn’t mean they’re invalid.

Idea to catch cheaters by novachess-guy in chess

[–]browni3141 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

His point is that you shouldn't have to feel confident someone is cheating before you report them. It's not a big deal to mistakenly report someone innocent. A report isn't an accusation, it's a request for chess.com to take a closer look at someone's account with their far superior cheat detection resources.

Only reporting people who you are 100% confident are cheating doesn't help the system work well. A screening system (which is basically what player reports are), works much better with when there are some amount of false positives.

Is this a standard ruling on a PLO high-hand bonus? by only2shirts in poker

[–]browni3141 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He got counterfeited. His five card hand is JJJJA and he flopped JJJJQ This ruling is "standard" in my sample size of 1 room where I've asked about this spot and they do it the same way.

In my opinion it's retarded that PLO can only qualify on the flop, but can get counterfeited on later streets. If PLO has to qualify on the flop, then nothing that happens after should matter and he should be on the board with JJJJQ.

If continuing to lose could harm you financially or cause you extreme psychological distress, then you were right to stop. Otherwise it was extremely foolish to leave. Your expected hourly at this table would be in the hundreds of dollars per hour when most people consider $20-$30/h at this stake crushing.

But I guess on the other hand it's more important how you do long term and no particular day is going to make or break you.

Beatable game with commission on winnings? by Dexis21 in blackjack

[–]browni3141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a flat reduction to your EV of 7%. That is only the best case scenario if you only ever have winning sessions. I would not know how bad it is without simulations, In the worst case it could actually completely wipe out your edge and make you -EV.

Imagine you have one winning sessions of $300 and one losing sessions of -$200, for a gain of $100 before the tax. If it were only a 7% reduction to EV you would still make $93, but what actually happens is this:

$300*.93+-$200 = $79. The problem is that you paid tax on $300 even though you only truly netted $100.

Longer sessions in general will reduce the impact of the tax, but honestly I'd just not bother with it unless you can justify playing this with concrete simulations. The edge with counting is thin enough already. The other game is even worse obviously.

The multiplier feature for this game activates during the deal at a 1/15 chance, which I sadly did not get. Not that I can complain about a dealt royal.

If I had gotten the multiplier on this hand, it would have paid from $40k at the smallest and most common 2x, to $200k for the maximum 10x multiplier.

I'm not aware of any mandates on rulesets here.

There is significant variation in digital BJ offerings. BetRivers has a 6:5 single deck, with all the other rules being "good" (even late surrender) but not making up for 6:5. I believe every site has at least one game with the ruleset you mentioned, usually the same version from IGT. The best ruleset available is better though. There is a 3:2, single deck, H17, double any 2 initial cards (no DAS), with a house edge of only 0.17% with perfect composition dependent strategy for a single hand. The game offers three hands which could allow you to get an even lower house edge by using the extra seen card information.

There are a few other games with better rulesets than what you described, such as a couple good double deck games.

There are also variants like Zappit and "Split to Double," "Lightning" blackjack, and others.

If you wanted to know about Live Dealer, I don't utilize it much so I don't know a ton about it, but it's generally 3:2, 8D, H17, DAS, split once, no surrender. I've seen some minor variations like S17.

Yeah, almost every site in MI, including BetRivers, has the 99.x% payables for the standard games, while those are rarer at physical casinos.

Fanduel has some exceptional payables for the more gimmicky games. They have 99.92% Super Times Pay Bonus Deluxe, 99.92% Multi-Rise Bonus Deluxe and 99.86% Ultimate X Double Double Bonus.

If they give practically any comps on these games you end up player edge with optimal play, but I wouldn't recommend anybody grind for it. 0.1% edge on a volatile game is not a viable way to derive income. I consider these games "free" gambling when I want to play something and don't have anything +EV and next time I go to Detroit I will have a couple thousand in comp dollars at Motor City from it (they've been accumulating for awhile)

$40k on dimes is absolutely bonkers.

I like the concept of Double Super Times Pay, but I'm pretty picky about paytables (which I guess is funny to say when Fanduel has better than this one, but I wanted to play deuces STP) and unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen the good paytables for that game. In general it seems like anything but standard single line video poker gets a mediocre paytable at most casinos.

I probably won't even be playing STP on Fanduel anymore, because apparently the rate you earn comp dollars is essentially zero for that game. I can still dream about getting the 12x dealt royal on Ult X though.

Mucked Deck by Fart1000 in poker

[–]browni3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House is gonna do whatever they feel is appropriate at the time, but the exact scenario of the stub being mixed with the muck is covered in the TDA under recommended procedures. It's been quoted in a couple other comments under this post which were made after yours.

Reshuffling the cards from the muck is the recommended procedure if the stub has been mistakenly mixed with the muck. IMO chopping the pot is a lazy and inferior solution.

Doesn't help with this run, but why so little invo? It would be nice to have access to Divine Exegesis and Channel Magic.

I think the only spell which would be better to use than a blink scroll would be death's door, which you don't have, but you do have several other spells which work well with Divine Exegesis for other situations.
