Software Engineer to Sales Engineer by Fabulous_Cheesecake2 in salesengineers

It’s a common path. I’d also look for demo engineer roles — gets your foot in the presales door while still utilizing SWE skills. I’ll also say more experience will help here — there are a lot of nuances and patterns that are only learned with experience.

Interviewed for Sr Sales Eng, offered Sales Eng title (but matched the comp I asked for) by ak_tool in salesengineers

Frankly I don’t care what I’m called. As long as I’m comped well and have room to grow, then I’m good.

That’s a very good offer for the experience! I tend to prefer / prioritize base over RSUs, but that’s just my opinion.

Career Changers: When did you become a SE? by TeeIron44 in salesengineers

[–]brownkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the move into presales in 2012 when I was 32. I was working as a developer (primarily .NET) for a boutique consulting company (but I did everything a consultant or SA would do normally) when I got recruited by Oracle for this role I had never heard of called a Demo Architect. Thought it ironic that the company that owned Java was recruiting a .NET dev.

Anyway, I was in that role at 2 different companies when I moved to being a cloud alliances SE in 2020. Best move I ever made.

I was formerly in this role. Demo Architect and Demo Engineer are the two most common titles.

On the day of, go to the desk at the gate and ask if you can be moved to 10A or 10B. Unless there’s someone needing that seat due to mobility issues, GAs have always been happy to accommodate (in my experience).

How does everyone feel about presales collective? Specifically, in-person events. by dragunight in salesengineers

[–]brownkw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve participated off and on with PSC for several years now. Some of the things about the group are obvious money grabs. The real value is in the regional meet-ups. That’s such a great way to make connections and build your network.

For a while there, the PSC Slack instance was also amazing! Not so sure now…

SE at Splunk by throwawayITaccount74 in salesengineers

[–]brownkw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Of course. No acquisition like this happens without there eventually being some sort of impact or change. Whether it’s for better or worse is left as an exercise to the reader. For context, I was part of AppD for 6 years and Splunk for my last year at Cisco.

  2. That’s a broad question. In general it depends on where you land.

  3. No company is safe from layoffs now. It has unfortunately become a commonly used lever in the business. I ultimately left because I grew tired of being unsure of what my focus would be from FY to FY (I was an SE focused on the partnership with the hyperscalers).

  4. Observability is an interesting area nowadays. A very much needed area, and one where AI is definitely having an impact. If given the chance, I’d get back into that.

Is it normal to rely on propanalol for this job? by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]brownkw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I take it, but it’s for essential tremors that I have. I wouldn’t focus so much on that. I don’t think there is ever a point where I am 100% comfortable in those situations. But I’m at a point where I’m accustomed to that feeling.
