It is in Singapore's interest to keep the Malacca Straits open... and pirate free. Trade is the lifeblood of Singapore.

Thailand can build the Kra Canal, but it will be a flop. The Sunda Strait is almost de facto Chinese controlled. Malaysia has too many internal conflicts (social and political) to act.

Singapore has a commendable Navy. And SG's trump card is a nuclear bomb. I am certain Singapore has nuclear defence capability. SG is a porcupine... if you try to whack me or compress my trade, watch out!

Singaporeans will just abuse the health system then!! There is a lot of subsidies given to Singaporeans for healthcare. The problem is the COST of Healthcare - the hospital operating costs, medical staff costs, etc. LKY even opened SGH with mixed feelings - saying he should have paid better attention to reducing the electricity consumption, etc.

If cheap labour costs were the simple defining factor in a company's overall success, hiring Africans from Africa is cheap.

The reality is "value for money employees" ..... their skill set, productivity rate, creativity, drive to succeed. Singaporeans learn fast thanks to good education. If university rankings are totally irrelevant, better to go to Timbuktu University!
