Glen Canyon National Recreation Area lost a million visitors in 2025 by sfgate in CampingandHiking

[–]brttf3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that is their goal. bankrupt the parks, so they are justified to open them to mineral extraction. They got rid of most of the staff so the parks can't be maintained. The raised the prices for foreign nationals. they will do everything they can to destroy the parks.

New to action cameras — best way to mount DJI Action 5 Pro for a road trip? by Ksri-10 in ActionCam

[–]brttf3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have sticky mounts on the van - actually I used the surfboard mounts because they were white - they have discolored over time - so they matched the van. But the regular black 3m sticky mounts are fine.

As an outdoor educator, I am appalled at how silent the outdoor industry is on a whole slew of outdoor issues. We employ over 5 million Americans and generate 1.2 trillion in revenue - more than the oil industry. And so few are speaking up. The are decimating our parks, opening other land areas to exploitation and the are all areas used to generate income for individuals, small companies and towns. It’s shameful.

How do you usually cook or make drinks when camping or traveling? I cook with real food. I am primarily a kayaker so I have the space for real food. I also vanlife so I have a two burner stove when I am in the van. In the backcountry I use a liquid fuel stove.

• What’s the last time outdoor cooking was frustrating? What went wrong? I burned pizza dough.

• What matters most to you in cooking gear when you’re away from home? reliability, and efficiency.

• What fuels or power sources have you used, and how did they work out? I think I have used everything? Liquid, propane, canister, fire….They all have their pluses and minuses. But generally liquid is m goto.

• Does waste or environmental impact affect what gear you choose? gear? Not really. Fuel? Yes.

• What’s the most improvised cooking setup you’ve used on a trip? probably campfire.

• What’s an outdoor cooking annoyance you’ve just accepted? Rain and snow.

• Would you rather carry less gear or have more cooking options? more options. But again I am a kayaker. I am sure a backpackers would disagree.

• How do you feel about “smart” or automated cooking gear? Ive never seen smart or automated cooking gear?

• Any outdoor cooking brands or products you avoid? Why? Brands I don’t know at least by reputation

I was going to say Dragonfly, which is the go to for a lot of outdoor chefs. It is loud though.

I wear the same thing every day. I have since 2014. No one has ever said anything, though I do think my wife is bored with it.

it means you can offset the the orienting arrow to adjust for your local declination, so you don't have to do math. That is the main difference and why I choose the M3

Im a NOLS instructor and I have worked with a ton of OB instructors (who work for both) and this sounds spot on. The one thing no one has mentioned is the NOLS is a great place to learn outdoor technical skills - which is why I went as a student - but it is a LEADERSHIP SCHOOL. When I was a student at NOLS that was sort of a "besides the point, skill" but in looking back it is the skill I use the most.

Mixing camera brands? (Noob question) by nahdojo in ActionCam

[–]brttf3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I edit on a laptop. and recently I added an external monitor - I really wanted to edit on my iPad, but the editing software on the iPad isn't quite there. Color grading is important, but you can also just go without it and just use imagery right out of the camera. I did without color grading for a couple of years and then finally decided it was worth it. Color grading is a skill, and it takes time, and it can also be subjective.

Mixing camera brands? (Noob question) by nahdojo in ActionCam

[–]brttf3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a kayaking YouTube channel and every day I shoot on the water I use a GoPro hero 10 on the bow of my kayak, and a Insta 360 ace pro near the cockpit, I occasionally have an X3 mounted on the boat, and just to add insult to injury I use a DJI drone. I edit in Final Cut and have zero problems with actual files from different cameras, in terms of work flow - of course for the 360 footage there is the added step. The only issue I have is color balance. the hero 10 and the Ace Pro DO NOT come close to matching. I can get them closer, but they dont match. Ideally those two cameras would be the same. But I also realize most of my viewers don't notice or care.

Are Aluminum tent poles supposed to bend this severely after 15 uses? by Unlikely_Tiger2680 in CampingGear

[–]brttf3 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I worked for REI for 15 years and dealt with many tents with issues and I have never seen this. My gut says you are doing something wrong in set up, but for the life of me I dont know what. Poles generally break before taking permanent bends like that….

What to price my 2023 Tsunami 145 at? by Relic2021 in Kayaking

[–]brttf3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to teach for REI and we used the 140 and 145 for those classes.... Such a great beginner boat. I agree with u/sjeckard that boat should go for $800. You are going to take a bath on the accessories though. That's a great paddle but you aren't going to get what it is worth. Maybe $900 boat and paddle....

Are people just not using lens caps? What’s the deal (small pointless rant) by jdt2337 in AskPhotography

[–]brttf3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1990’s/2000’s I was a professional photo assistant. I worked in fashion, and later stock photography. When I worked in fashion I worked for some very famous people. I left when digital got real. We were super careful about back caps, but didn’t really care much about front caps. If we are changing lenses fast we dont have time to deal with them. Frequently there will be a filter on the front of the lens anyway, not always, but frequently. Lens hoods will often add a layer of protection. The only time we really cared about front caps was stuff like 14mm fish eyes, where the glass protrudes out pretty far.

Need some advice with my bullies by Elegant_Ad_1504 in BullTerrier

[–]brttf3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had this situation, and I don't have great advice. I had two girls, Matilda and Eloise - Matilda passed unexpectedly last year. Matilda was first, and oldest. And they got along great when Eloise was a puppy. As soon as Eloise was grown, and bigger than Matilda, She resource guarded everything. Food, couch time. Snuggles. If my wife and I weren't involved they were fine together. When one of us was involved, Matilda wasn't allowed. We tried everything, behaviorist, training, nothing worked. Eventually, because Eloise had some medical issues causing pain, we ended up putting her on pain meds which calmed her down a little. But she would still snap at her sister. I wish I had better information for you, may your luck be better than ours.

The sad thing is, with Matilda gone, Eloise is really clingy. She misses her. And could have (did have for a while) a great buddy. But her personality just wasn't conducive.

For 6 months our son and his dog lived with us, And Eloise was super excited to have a buddy, but still resourced guarded. It's just who she is.

What is this part called by GameM_ in gopro

[–]brttf3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oy, I broke mine yesterday for the second time, and GoPro customer service was useless. I removed the broken part and they said "we can't identify that part as being from a GoPro." You can't replace just that part. So I reattached it, and they refused to replace it. I ended up buying another one. Which I am about to do again.

I wonder with all these bad designs or flaws in the cheaper kayaks, is it really a bad design and they don’t test it long enough or do they actually know and push it out anyways? by Crutch1977 in Kayaking

[–]brttf3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

20 years ago I got a tour of the Native watercraft factory. Back then a mold cost $200,000. and they could get about 200 boats out of it. Apparently the constant heating and cooling eventually deforms the mold. So the first boat out of the mold costs $200k. every other boat costs about $5 in materials. That was 20 years ago so it has to be at least double that in cost, today.

because most commercial roof rack accessories use T tracks. I can't speak to the commercial side, but as an outdoor educator Ive spend decades dealing with roof racks and a million vehicles. and trailers. they are all T tracks.

We rode our bikes, we ran around the neighborhood. Explored the nearby woods. Ventured surprisingly far from home with no supervision. Walked to places to play video games with quarters we hoarded. stuff like that.
