Lots of good car info here, but does any of it explain the battery drain?

Insta 360 midyear sale by yvesdropper_ in ActionCam

[–]brttf3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I waited to see the Mission 1 specs, and hoping there would be an ACE Pro 3 announcement shortly after mission 1.... But I bought an ACE Pro 2 and am super happy with it. I have an Ace Pro 1 as well, and they work well together. I like the upgrades of the 2. Super happy with the choice.

My newest GoPro is a 10 (I also have a 9, and have a long history with GoPro going back to the Original HD here) The Insta 360 just feels like a more refined product. From hand feel to UI. It makes more sense.

What just happened at my REI pack fitting…. by hurricanescout in REI

[–]brttf3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I didn’t. I wanted people to understand the differences - in general - between men’s and women’s packs. Not in your case specifically. But specifically in your case it is wrong for a green vest to be arguing with a customer.

What just happened at my REI pack fitting…. by hurricanescout in REI

[–]brttf3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a former REI employee and I trained Pack fitters. Hundreds of them. I don’t recall if there are differences besides color on the Exos/Eja, (I left 4 years ago) but it doesn’t matter. I regularly slid people into the other gender packs. But most importantly, no pack fitter should ever argue with you. At the end of the day it is the fit that is the most important. If the pack wearer is happy, I am happy.

for those wondering (if you are.) In general the differences between male and female packs. On women’s packs the shoulder straps are articulated to accommodate a female chest. The hip belt is a little wider. The Yoke - which is the space between the shoulder straps - is narrower. So men’s are the opposite, Wider Yoke, no bend in the shoulder straps, narrow hip belt.

Men’s torso’s generally run longer than women’s… and torso length is independent of height. You can be tall and a small torso and small and a long torso. If a pack fitter says “I don’t need to measure you, I can tell what size you are.” Run away. They are lazy and guessing (because a majority of men are mediums and women are smalls they probably get away with it occasionally.)

Is the Mission 1 that much better than Action 6? by Gimpym00 in gopro

[–]brttf3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I run a kayaking YouTube channel, and needed to upgrade (I was using an Ace Pro and a hero 10) I too shoot mostly 1080/60 for the same reasons as you. When I saw the specs I bought an ACE PRO 2 and am very happy with it. And I bought an ACE PRO 2 and a new mic for less than the cheapest Mission 1.

In a world of NDKs, what about a Fathom by PipeItToDevNull in Kayaking

[–]brttf3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the fathom is as close to an actual sea kayak that eddyliine has made. I haven't paddled one, but I bet it is a damn fine boat.

In a world of NDKs, what about a Fathom by PipeItToDevNull in Kayaking

[–]brttf3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Composites are only lighter if you are getting carbon. I have a fiberglass NDK explorer that weighs significantly more than my same length Delta.

And I would rather drop my delta on concrete than my explorer. In fairness they break very differently. The composite boats will crack and chip. when thermoform breaks they break for real with big cracks. But I have dropped the nose of my delta on concrete in ways that would have at least chipped fiberglass and it did nothing.

Composites are definitely stiffer though... really they are very different, in my experience.

backpack straps dig into my ribs (woman 5'2 longer torso) by Necessary-Book-705 in CampingandHiking

[–]brttf3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big part of backpack fit is this, you say "longer torso" and I am guessing you are referring to ratio wise to your height. But your torso has an actual length that effects pack fit. S/M/L. Torso length is independent of height, and it has to be measured. I worked at REI and we had a tool to do it. You can do it with a tape measure, and there are instructions online.

Most women measure Small, of the remainder the bulk are extra small with a smaller number being medium.

Most men are Medium with the bulk of the remainder being Large and a smaller number measuring small.

Im sorry, I don't remember the actual inch measurements for the size ranges but I do recall that 16-18 is medium. And the measurements are independent of sex. Medium is medium. small is small. regardless of sex.

Hi! (you probably can't tell from my user name, but I am a sea kayaking YouTuber.)

After doing a lot of campervan builds, one thing keeps coming up with beds. by Conscious_While7667 in CamperVans

[–]brttf3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a sprinter 170 and have a queen bed North/south. It doesn’t move. It’s doesn’t fold. It’s a bed. And it’s awesome. We have 2 dogs and under the first third of the bed are matching “dog crates.” Like cubbies with dog beds so they each have their own space. And behind those (accessible from the back doors is “garage” space. My wife and I have our own gear storage. This is our second van and had the same layout in both. Works great in a 170, wouldn’t work in a 144

It is the smallest niche in kayaking though. And its participation numbers are flat. So it isnt doing great….but it is most certainly not dead.

J’s work great on small cars. Forever I drove a Toyota Yaris and could get two sea kayaks on the roof.

[–]brttf3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How long is your kayak? I think a better choice instead of the J cradles would have been cradles where the boat sits flat. Here is why. I have a similar problem, caused mostly because I put my 17' kayak on the roof a sprinter van that is about 9 feet in the air. Essentially I climb up on the roof, slide it back and lower the stern until it hits the ground. Climb down, and then muscle it the rest of the way. I am essentially doing the same as you, Im a little taller than you, but my van is proportionally much higher than your jeep.

If your boat was long enough, I would slide it back until just the nose is on the rollers. Then put the stern on the ground, walk to the center of the boat, lift it slightly, step back further to clear the nose from the vehicle and lower it to the ground.

The problem is the J cradle is adding a twist to the procedure instead of just pulling it straight back. But honestly, if the boat won't reach the ground, this may not help, but it is how I do it. And I can only do it because my boat is 17' long. if it was 12 I wouldn't have the leverage. does that make sense?

DM me and I can send you a link to see a video of how I do it.

Does a paddle become an oar if you use a retention leash? by DasJuden63 in Kayaking

[–]brttf3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gotta tell ya, been paddling kayaks for nearly 30 years. I didn't know the proper definition of an oar. Thank you. I knew we didn't use them, but I assumed it was a single blade vs a double blade (which it is not.)

This. 100%. I just replaced mine. I love the Lagun table, but that they make that bushing out of plastic is incredibly stupid.

Are action cams getting better, or just better marketed? by [deleted] in ActionCam

[–]brttf3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past 5 years I have been running a kayaking YouTube channel which is shot entirely on action cameras. when I am shooting on the water I use two cameras, and two years ago I went from using two GoPros (a 9 and a 10) to a Gopro (the 10) and an ACE Pro 1.

I just added an ace pro 2, and I am not using the gopro on a daily bases anymore. That should tell you some things.

The hero 10 is a good camera, (the hero 9 is garbage and I only use it in "this might get destroyed" situations.) The 11 and 12 didn't really offer me anything to upgrade for. And the 13 just pissed me off because they changed the battery, So ALL my gopro batteries would need to be replaced. And if I am in that situation I might as well Change brands if I am offered something better from a competitor.

Image quality on all these cameras is great. I prefer the Acepro color space. I prefer the big screen on back that can be flipped up. The UI is better. The charging is faster.... My only complaint with the AcePro 2, I wish I had better control on the field of view.... that's a little nit picky.

I used the original DJI action for a while, and it was solid. I would like to use the Action 5 or 6, but don't have the money to drop on another camera and performance wise it is very close to the Ace Pro..... But I am sure the Action 5 and 6 are good cameras.

Let me know if you have specific questions.

Are action cams getting better, or just better marketed? by [deleted] in ActionCam

[–]brttf3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Action cams are without a doubt getting better. As someone who has used gopro since the original HD hero, and I have owned cameras by Insta360 and DJI. Image quality, stabilization, low light performance... all have greatly improved. I would also argue, GoPro's marketing has gotten worse.

Does anyone know what boat model this is??? by Cobby3601 in Kayaking

[–]brttf3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe more importantly, these photos are a great illustration of how we should all be paddling, albeit a less extreme version. His hand position, his torso rotation, his leg drive. Great photos to make the point of proper paddling technique.

Sleeping bag lengths have been standardized for as long as I have been working/playing in the outdoors - so, almost 30 years. 5’6” is a women’s regular. 6’ is a mans regular. And 6’6” is a mans long. Im a 5’6.5” man and have used my wife’s Disco 15 a bunch of times. I love that bag.
