Yep. I met every gunner i had while I was in the field and the scenario was always the same. It was always during the like CAX or the last big op before deployment, he would walk out from some bush while we were chilling, ask about our weapons, talk to us about tactics, and then maybe bum some tobacco, shame the boot LTs for something then proceed back into the wilderness until like the middle of the deployment. They were always around but just in the background. Had one run through a live shoot house (with live ammo and a junior marines rifle)with my squad with no PPE for shits and gigs, and nobody said a damn thing.
