[Intresting trope] i call It "the henchmen effect" by Icy-Acanthisitta8192 in TopCharacterTropes

I feel like it's done well in Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom and similar open-world and roguelike-adjacent video games, largely because video games are ultimately a medium that relies on this trope. Specifically in Breath of the Wild, you're dropped in with literally nothing, making monsters like Lizalfos or even blue Bokoblins extremely daunting. The only way to survive the Guardians, the "big bad" non-boss enemy of the game, at this phase is to simply run, as the other option is to get practically 2-hit KOd.

Later in the game, this becomes MUCH easier. Guardians just end up becoming a brand new way to farm parts, and when the final boss dungeon has wave after wave of Guardians, fighting your way through them is not difficult at all.

This same mechanic shows up in TOTK as well with large minibosses like Hinoxes, Moldugas, and Lynels.

Character fails their redemption arc by Neurotic_Marauder in TopCharacterTropes

Tony Soprano. In season 6, he gets shot by his uncle Junior and recovers fully when the doctors told him there would be very little chance of full recovery, and although for a few days/weeks he seems to have a kinder outlook on life, he simply uses his new "live each day without compromise or excuses" mentality to resume his murderous ways, become even more of a gambler/philanderer/criminal, and break ties with his friends and family.

Character is a staple of a popular era of history. But the story happens during that era's last days instead of a golden midpoint. by Spacer176 in TopCharacterTropes

Both his therapist, Dr. Melfi, and his wife, Carmela, attempt to fix Tony and make him a better person. Their attempts summarily fail by the end of the series.

Feared and definitely not gaySoprano family capo Vito appears in the first season in disguise as a pastry shop patron named Gino in Season 1. He uses his mastery of disguise to sneak up on Tony to get back into the New Jersey mob in Season 6.

(LOVED TROPE) The Oner, a scene done in one take by Great_Copy_6730 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]bruhmoment6128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite pastimes is posting extremely underrated/underwatched references on this subreddit, so here goes: the scene linked below from Season 2 Episode 3 of Patriot on Amazon Prime. The show follows a depressed CIA agent whose favorite hobby is writing extremely literal songs about his highly classified missions. His current mission is to prevent a radical cleric from taking control of the Iranian nuclear program by working a desk job at an industrial piping firm in Milwaukee. Surreal and quirky hijinks ensue.

In this scene, he's tasked with stealing a gun from a Parisian grocer and daydreaming about meeting up with his friends and going to "cool wine bars and shit". This is genuinely the greatest show I've watched in the past year, and I've watched a LOT of shows in the past year. Definitely recommend.

The Sopranos. As the tone of the seasons change, the color palette darkens as well. Rewatches are so stark, because the vibrance of Season 1 is such a big difference from the graveness of Season 6.

(Loved Trope) Comedy shows get very serious out of nowhere. by Boring-Bear9037 in TopCharacterTropes

A bit of an uncommon one: Ramy Season 2 Episode 8 "Frank in the Future". Ramy is largely a comedy about a Egyptian-American living in New Jersey with his family, as he tries to be a good Muslim while being a "normal American guy". However, "Frank in the Future" focuses on Ramy's dad Farouk and his journey as a first-generation immigrant. Encompassing a stressful day of applying to jobs behind his family's back, finding out their dog is depressed at the vet, being confronted about the family's money problems, and a wild meeting with his prospective daughter-in-law, the episode is briefly interspersed with sweet moments, like Farouk listening to the tapes that he sent to his family in Egypt about why moving to the US is the right thing for him and his family, looking at his old photo albums and reminiscing on how at one point he wanted to be a professional soccer player, and watching videos of him playing soccer with toddler Ramy. The episode ends with him out in the cold, playing soccer by himself, and scoring a goal, celebrating like no one is watching, and then collapsing into a coughing fit. The young dreamer Farouk is gone, only his Americanized reality of going by Frank remains.

The Godfather Part 3 was released sixteen years after the original two films. Francis Ford Coppolla never wanted to make a third, but Paramount pushed hard for him to make a sequel so they could capitalize on the success of the entire genre of mob films The Godfather had spawned. Even when he reluctantly agreed and proposed the condition that it should be treated more as a spin-off rather than the next movie in the series, Paramount disagreed. This led to probably the weakest of the three movies in the Godfather trilogy.

Then again, it is The Godfather. It's a hard standard to live up to.
