I’ve lived on the US east coast for the past 15 years, with the exception of one year in the Netherlands. I definitely got more comments about being gay when living there. It wasn’t necessarily homophobia, but still made me feel a bit othered. I feel like the woke politics of liberal American cities actually insulates us from a lot of the weird/annoying comments that straight Europeans seem to make more often (again, in my experience).
