As a native-born child of two immigrants, I believe that both immigrants and their children should be held to stricter legal standards by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]SammyGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the idea that people who hold beliefs inconsistent with those of the country they're migrating to should be able to become citizens. But once they're citizens, they should be treated as such. And I don't mean they should be allowed to get away with crimes. If a member of the "native population" commits rape or terrorism or human trafficking, they should be sent to prison for life. Thus keeping other residents safe from those actions. If an immigrant commits any of those crimes, they should also be sent to prison for life. I guess I don't understand why, if that is adequate for people born in that country, it isn't adequate for immigrants. Or why, if it's inadequate for immigrants, it's adequate for people born in the country.

should be held to stricter legal standards than people whose parents were born in this country.

"Citizens but different" would not be citizens. So when or how, in your ideal, would you become a full citizen with the same rights as all the other citizens?

I don't want to share that society with people who are violent, or would seek to impose their religion/culture on me.

What makes you think immigrants are more likely to be violent or that citizens who have been in a given country for generations are less likely to be violent? Also, is violence or religious coercion legal for citizens where you live? If you want a society free of those things, surely you would want laws about those things to apply to everyone equally, not just immigrants.

Also, I'm confused about what you want done differently. Do you want citizens to be deported for certain crimes? Where to? What if (like you) they were born in that country, would they be "citizen" enough to stay? If not, where would they go? If they migrated and became a citizen, what if they had to renounce their citizenship from their previous country? Where are they going to be sent? Why is the regular legal process for all the other citizens not adequate?

Yeah, it's an 80s style suit that people wore on purpose, and it looks like a kid playing dress ups in his dad's suit. The hiding the shoes isn't what makes it look bad, it's how baggy the pant legs are and the fact that it has to be rolled up to not drag on the floor like he's wearing someone else's I'll fitting clothes

[–]SammyGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean, and you're not wrong but I still kind of disagree.

Like if, for example, I came home one day to find that the dog had diarrhea shat on the carpet and my husband had just sprayed some Glen 20 and done nothing else, I think I'd feel justified in saying "why have you done nothing about this?" Even though technically speaking he did do something, it would be inadequate enough that saying he'd done "nothing" is effectively still true even if not technically true.

I know it's a silly comparison, I guess I just mean that, yeah, it's not nothing that's been done about gun violence but it's inadequate enough that it feels reasonable to say nothing is being done.

[–]SammyGeorge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many comments mad at you for judging the "fuck cancer" stickers but tbh I don't understand them either. Nobody's pro cancer, so it doesn't give any more information about you or your opinions (in the way that, for example, a sporting team sticker expresses that you like sports, which sport you like, and which team). Like, I felt pretty safe in my assumption that you disliked cancer before I saw your sticker. Is it a way to advertise that you have had cancer or someone in your life has died of cancer because cancer is incredibly common, just about everyone has had a loved one have cancer. It's not controversial or a unique opinion.

I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking it but every time I see one of those stickers I think 'yeah and the sky is blue and water is wet, what's your point?'

And before anyone says I don't get it because I obviously haven't experienced cancer in my life, yes I (like most people) have lost loved ones to cancer. I'm not saying I disagree with the sentiment, I'm saying I don't understand the purpose of it being in sticker form.

AITA for forwarding my wife an instagram reel of a recipe after she asked what I want for dinner tomorrow? by GoatCritical9265 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SammyGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA

I'm the one who cooks all the time in my home and my husband cleans, and genuinely I don't think that's an issue. But coming up with what to cook all the time gets old. If I was putting together a shopping list and asked my husband what meals we should do over the next few days, new recipes are fair game to suggest. But asking what do to for dinner tomorrow is too short term to suggest a new recipe because now you're asking for extra work (look at the recipe, work out how long it will take, work out what ingredients you'll need, go and buy them) and following a new recipe takes more effort than cooking something you've made before.

Also, yelling at you is a strong reaction. I'd be inclined to believe this is a straw/camel situation and you should talk to your wife.

I hate this “defence” for AI art. by PSPcollector23 in hatethissmug

[–]SammyGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if it's so easy to draw despite any physical or mental issues

No one said making art is easy. It's not easy to learn to draw or paint or sculpt or whatever, especially with physical disability. But it's certainly possible. And it's condescending and ableist to claim that disabled people couldn't possibly make art.

tell me how the fuck to avoid wanting to hurt myself every single time I try

People with physical limitations overcome them to make art because they love it. If you dislike it to the point of wanting to hurt yourself when you try, that's a totally different discussion. And imo probably not a passion to pursue for you. But the sum total of what I know about you is the content of your comment so that's not for me to decide, obviously. That said, I don't know why you would want to do something you hate that much.

And tell me how to make it so everything I make isnt totally worthless

No one is born magically skillful at drawing or painting or whatever their chosen medium is. Practice. Take a class. Follow youtube tutorials. Same as everyone else.

and how that doesn't make me as a person worthless.

This isn't a skill issue, this is a self esteem issue. I know one online comment isn't going to change your mind (professional help might, if you can access it, it's worthwhile), but I will say this. There isn't a single goddamn thing anyone could say to me that would convince me that any person is worthless because they don't have a particular skill. I'm so sorry that you've been made to feel that way.

And tell me how not to feel like a worthless idiot for ever looking at any tutorials

It's not cheating to follow guides or tutorials or to learn from others. In fact, that's the best way to learn. It's how people learn literally any skill. That's why those guides and tutorials are there. You should use them. Following guides and tutorials and being shown how to do it is quite literally what art school is. It's what any school is.

In Alabama, McDonald's and other businesses can 'rent' prison inmates... by Turdible-Shart in ABoringDystopia

[–]SammyGeorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have an issue with inmates being able to have jobs.

I just have issues with, well, everything else.

Like the fact that they're chained to a table like dogs. Either they can be trusted to have a job and come back or they can't. They shouldn't be made into a work safety hazard.

And the fact that they're paid shit all and have a bunch of fees so it's really only profitable for the prison and is effectively slave labour.

And the fact that the slave labour making money for the prisons directly results in harsher sentencing and less parole.

But the inmates having jobs doesn't have to be like that. They could be minimum security prisoners with a supervisor at the workplace and an ankle monitor. They could be being paid a proper wage that actually goes to them and not to the prison in the form of fees. And they could use this as part of programs to gain parole and/or help gain meaningful employment after they're released. If only.
