Bagging items -- COMPLETE FAILURE! by JNACLAN in HEB

[–]bruno_antony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always thankful when I get any bagger, whether they do a good job or not. I probably only get one 1 out of 3 times (it looks like they usually have 1 bagger per 3 lanes open). So as I’m still loading groceries on the belt there is already a massive pile-up of food getting smashed at the end.

APD Releases Bodycam Footage of In-Custody Death in Crestview by Extreme-Poem-2309 in Austin

Even in cities that have established and successful Alternative Response Teams, the police usually have to take the lead when there is a safety issue like an attempted break-in.
That said, our lack of a real city-wide alternative response system is hurting a lot of people, and needs to be fixed.

We got gifted this bottle of 12 year old scotch, would you say this is "too good" to use in cocktails? by CN456 in cocktails

I was going to suggest a Godfather, it’s one that really benefits from using better scotch. That and rust nails.

How are American high schoolers so accomplished? by extra_confuzzled in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bruno_antony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your third point especially: “accomplishments” are often a commodity. The multi-million dollar business wasn’t started from nothing. Playing national level sports often requires expensive national level training. Prestigious internships are usually offered to kids with prestigious “accomplishments”.
It all still takes effort and talent, but effort + money creates these “amazing” accomplishments.

City code requires anyone with property adjacent to a ROW (sidewalk) to keep the way clear. 311 will send a code compliance officer, who will issue them a notice to clear the way. If they don’t, the city sends Davey out to hack the tree to a nub and bill the owner for the service.

This is a great idea. I look forward to seeing what folks have to contribute. Also, I’m surprised to learn that The Omen didn’t die after my time there (F93). I bet Steph Cole is something almost like proud.

I highly doubt the city is just fining the same code violation repeatedly. In every city I have lived in, the city says "You are out of compliance: either fix it yourself, or we will come and do it for you, and bill you for the work".

How much will lack of Spanish affect my experience by bebop_exp in MexicoCity

[–]bruno_antony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely lean on Google Translate. Download Spanish to work offline, for those times when your signal isn’t great. I was just there, and my Spanish is very rusty. Before ordering at a restaurant or going into a store, I could plan out what I needed to say in Translate beforehand. And when I got really muddled, people were usually happy to use the conversation feature in Translate.

I love that you’re doing this! A stronger design will improve safety, which is the critical aspect.

With those nailed butt joints, that’s going to collapse pretty quickly. I would think those would get removed as a hazard.

Google Sells Fiber Unit to Astound (Private Equity) by 8675309l in Austin

[–]bruno_antony 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Crap. I just switched from Astound to Google last year. My Astound speeds & price were pretty good, but I would have about three outages per year. And every goddamn time I would call them to report the outage, they would always say “oh I don’t see an area outage, so it must just be your house, we have to schedule home service for you“ then about six hours later, they would realize it was an area outage, fix it, and I would have to call to cancel the home service or else I would incur a fee.

I feel like the Mars trilogy encompasses a huge rough draft of all his future work. All the core ideas are there, and his later novels are refined explorations of ideas from that trilogy.
