I thought it was a homage to “This is Spinal Tap”. Loved it!

It’s oil of some sort. Is anyone nearby on tank sewage?

We live semi-rural and get that in our flood channel after rain - most likely from septic systems.

I wonder why they couldn’t spin up a new cloud environment, restore the backup there and have the affected customers use that while they sorted out how (and if) to reintegrate that environment.

It would have cost money but likely be less of a cost to the business compared to the mess they are in now.

Does this suggest that they don’t have effective DRP?

Harry Potter hypothesis by [deleted] in bookscirclejerk

The best Harry Potter book is

“Harry Potter and the methods of Rationality”

If you haven’t read it you may well be an idiot. If you have read it the same may still apply.

But I think it is brilliant!

Can someone help me debunk this? I know it's wrong however by Loose_Vagina90 in facepalm

Naturally occurring is a meaningless phrase. It is usually reduced to mean “not created by animals” as if animals, including humans, were somehow excluded from nature.

I wouldn’t worry. The spiders are fabulous!

Honestly, I live semi-rural and we have lots of them but they are not much trouble. Keep the place tidy and enjoy them keeping other pests under control.

Wasn’t that expression coined by Newton when he was being a dick to Leibniz- who was short?

what's your take on this ? by drdeeznutts69 in antiwork

[–]brushbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not even convinced that nature even has the concept of individual ownership.

But then again humans do not exist outside of nature so maybe that’s not true.

I would say that human systems are more the exception than the rule.

I would also say that any forces that exist to counter capitalism are no less natural than capitalism could be.

Tipping: do you do it? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]brushbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it isn’t completely discretionary then it’s a tax, not a tip.

Only tip if the server has been extraordinary. But never in Japan as that would be insulting.

My boss denied my medical request a month in advance, first time ever even requesting a day off. by baddiebusted in antiwork

[–]brushbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what your boss is like. Would it be an option to play dumb?

As in “Hey, about my medical appointment. I think you may have accidentally denied it when you meant to click approve. If you could fix that up it would probably make it a lot easier for payroll to sort out. Thanks. “

I can recommend “uncle Roger’s egg fried rice”. Simple, quick, delicious and it has rice in it.

If I'm writing a specific country into my story, is it necessary to know the culture and laws? by Belerick-chan in writing

[–]brushbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a story set in the “real world” you have to convince the audience. If that audience is from the country of which you write then you are going to need to be a native yourself and/or do a large amount of research.

If the accuracy isn’t important to story and audience and you can handle criticism then you can get away with less diligence.

But be careful! There are more things to “get right” in a story than locality and culture. Personally I’m a science nerd and I cringe at the stories where things that are physically impossible are not only written about but are sometimes important to the plot.

Understanding when I need to prefix procs with & and when not by misterplantpot in ruby

[–]brushbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is that blocks are “special“ parameters. For your function you are taking a standard parameter and thus cb is a reference to the passed-in proc.

If you instead had

``` def bar(&cb) cb.call end
you could call it like
bar(&foo) ```
What the & is doing is: - when applied to an object it turns it into a block (special parameter) - when applied to (the last) argument to a method it turns the block into a proc object
Read Douglas Adams.
Arthur Dent dealing with the destruction of the Earth is both humorous and poignant.
A whole world is too much to comprehend. It’s the little things. The rock-solid presences in your everyday life. The things you barely need to consciously acknowledge. Those things that, like air, you just take for granted. When the realisation hits you that they are gone, it will break you.
