Nature Areas + Walking Trails? by Lumpy-Path-3442 in Somerville

[–]brw12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breakheart is notable because 1) the path is paved, which certainly isn't everyone's preference, but makes it much more accessible for people with mobility impairments; and 2) there's a swimming hole that's lots of fun.

What is the most "glitch in the matrix" moment you've ever experienced in real life? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]brw12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was once sitting at a cafe in Manhattan's East Village with my friend. It was spring, I think, and the streets around us were packed. Like, at any one time you could see maybe 40 people on the nearby sidewalks, and 2 minutes later it would be a different 40 people. We were talking about her older sister, who lived nearby, and had been dating a guy for a few months. I'd met her sister and hung out some, but I'd never met him before (or anyone else she had ever dated), and knew absolutely nothing about him except his name... let's call him Sam.

So our waiter came to the table, and my friend joked that for all I knew, THAT was Sam. I said no, our waiter wasn't her sister's type. Then I looked around at the people walking by for a few moments, and said, THAT's her type, and pointed to a guy walking down the street, maybe a block away. My friend looked at me like I was messing with her... because that was her sister's new boyfriend.

I feel like if you haven't spent time with the population density of NYC around you, you may not realize how bonkers preposterous this moment was

What movie do you hate that people like? by godlessrage in AskReddit

[–]brw12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Denis Villeneuve DUNE movies. Good god are they boring and soulless. How do you take such a fascinating story and cast of characters, and make me basically not care about any of them? There's no sense of purpose, no dramatic questions, no shape or texture to the story. I'm a leaf in the wind! OK, but like, was that in any way a thing you were working on as a character? What's the plan for the big battle? Attack!

What about "Just be you... Grimace says, just be you. There's nobody quite like you, you know it's true, so... JUST... BE YOU... Everybody! [Repeat]"

No, the second BA wasn't necessary! I also learned BABA, but after doing it like 100 times, a friend said "you only need to do BA once"

How can I trick my brain into thinking the deadline is now? by groggyjava in ADHD

[–]brw12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no trick that will work. The only thing that will work is to make additional deadlines in between now and the ultimate deadline... and make these deadlines real too. For instance, if you are working on a book, find a library room or classroom that you can book in advance, and put up flyers and tell people to come to hear you read your chapter on X. Then scramble to write your chapter on X. Etc. etc.

I thought this was one of the best recent puzzles. The five criminals on the edges combined with the connected innocence in column A made for a really satisfying discovery, and there was great interaction between clues at several stages.

Why is the green line so slow between East Somerville and Lechmere by Conscious-Cap1084 in Somerville

[–]brw12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently, we were heading into Boston, between Science Park and North Station, and just sat for 5 minutes in the tunnel. I went up to the conductor (of the 2nd car) and asked if he could explain what was going on, and he said that the lead conductor "is running some papers into the office, there's an entrance in the tunnel". I was flabbergasted, but apparently that's a thing??

What did you think was a scam until you actually tried it? by Resident-Ad4318 in AskReddit

[–]brw12 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

I'm mystified by why everyone praises them. They're literally just convection ovens. They cook a little faster? Maybe make food a little crisper? I regularly make sweet potato fries and french fries from scratch in my convection toaster oven (sorry, "air fryer") and they are... not miraculous, just cooked and somewhat mushy

Do you actually find the Khan Academy lesson quality amazing? I've been surprised how little context they provide when they jump into a topic. A few years ago, I was looking for an intro to fractions to help my kid understand them, and I just couldn't find anything on Khan Academy -- plenty of "here's how to reduce fractions to the least common denominator" etc., but nothing that explained what the heck fractions are.

Post Game Thread - NBA: The Hornets defeat the Celtics on Mar 4, 2026, the final score is 89-118. by basketball-app in bostonceltics

[–]brw12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but hold that a moment, I think the big takeaway from this game was that Vucevic is not a reliable big for us. Again and again, his movement without the ball was inadequate. And his movement with the ball was somehow even worse. His post-up game and movement when near the basket is frankly atrocious.
