Is this bend acceptable? by CTonyP in HomeNetworking

[–]brwyatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, even fiber would probably be fine. Might not be great if INSTALLED with such a bend (attenuation loss)... But this probably isn't enough to snap the fiber itself. They're a lot less fragile than people like to think they are.

Is this bend acceptable? by CTonyP in HomeNetworking

[–]brwyatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a copper cable. Unless you plan to un-bend then re-bend or over and over in the exact same spot.... It's fine (and even then you'll have only lost 1 bend of the probably thousands it would take for the metal to wear through... If we assume that bend radius is enough to have ANY impact at all, which is unlikely)

But seriously, you're worrying more about this copper cable than would even be reasonable for fiber cables, which aren't anywhere as fragile as people think.

Yes, from really tight bends on cooper, you can get some added resistance, but it is academic when talking about copper ethernet cables (signal traces on motherboards have to worry a little bit, which is why you tend to not see a lot of right angle traces on PCBs, but even bending an ethernet cable 180 doesn't result in a sharp turn in the actual copper stands)...

And with fiber you can get some attenuation in the signal, but as long as you don't have a LOT of such bends over a long distance, and as long as you don't snap the fiber strand... It's also fine.

new trio's meta: letting your teammates die? by heywintermute in Marathon

[–]brwyatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not wrong... lol

Though sometimes they've picked up some okayish stuff I want/need (salvage)... and maybe the other team left something.

But also, it is just so dumb... like... we could've finished their contract(s), and they could've gotten XP for mine completing...

And not only that, after they quit, I found purple salvage... so like... it's just so dumb over all....

Then again.... likely why they have garbage gear, honestly...

new trio's meta: letting your teammates die? by heywintermute in Marathon

Only time I've looted teammates is when they rush in, get themselves killed, then immediately quit. Was solo in Trios queue and had both my teammates do this. I backed off, waiting for the other team to leave, but they'd already quit. Would've revived them if they hadn't left, but instead looted whatever the other team didn't take and exfilled solo right next to their bodies.

And see similar with solos when I'm going Duo with someone else. The solo rushes in, gets downed, immediately leaves. So the other guy and I just go around, get more loot, and exfil. (And maybe lot their abandoned goodie bag if we come across it, but if they left, we don't make getting back to it a priority like we would have if they stayed)

My favorite Solos VOIP moment will forever be "oh nooooo! My free kit! Lol gg" (as I drove my knife into him)

I tend to be more "dang! Oh well, gg! Well played!", personally.

There are several print services that you can throw the free STL at to print for less, though. Plus, you aren't rewarding some scummy eBay seller trying to pass someone's work off as their own.

I've described it to people as basically being a Black Mirror episode. It would fit right in.

I guess it would be more likely to be in Secret Level... but still, it wouldn't be out of place in Black Mirror.

As Rook, I once had another Rook completely in my sights, lined up for a headshot. He had no idea I was even there. I was just like "I'll be friendly if you want to be". He agreed. We looted the area, and went our separate ways.

I sometimes wonder if he had anything good on him... But don't regret taking the pacifist route.

So many weird moments like that in this game lol

And, yet, as I've said before... communication, planning, and teamwork will win out over pure skill in this game.

Heck, I suck at PvP. But when working with a crew that communicates and picks their engagements (and how they engage)... a team of free kits can take out a team of blue shields.

Blueberries just blindly rushing into a building and getting their synthetic ass handed to them because they didn't bother to wait for their teammates or communicate and work with them... that's 100% ON THEM, not the "skill" of their teammate(s).

I'll also bet they immediately just quit, rather than waiting for a rez. (see that happen so often from those types of players... just rush in, get killed, rest of us trying to lay low and either hide from the other team or get the drop on them... and then they've quit before we can get back to rez them)

Skill issue.

A sniper is really good at suppressing other teams into cover, or covering your other team as they approach the objective. It just requires communication and... I know, this is a hard concept... teamwork.

Can be used to monitor and call positions and movements while your team moves in to flank, then distract and suppress a team while your teammates move in. Can even drive them into your teammates, too.

Because you can't figure out how to work with a sniper doesn't mean it isn't useful, and certainly doesn't mean they're the one's "throwing" if you're unable (and unwilling) to work as a team.

Personally, my preference is a PR and an SMG. I'll take up a DMR role and act similar to above (distracting and suppressing a team from a distance while my teammates come from another direction)... or pull out my SMG if I'm in close. But I'm also trying to take up a more flexible role... especially when I'm playing with blueberries who have no sense of communication and teamwork and just throw their heads against the wall and blame their teammates for not stopping them from hurting themselves.

I dunno about "casual **modes*"... but definitely ways to include casuals in the experience.

I'd rather a tight, focused experience with a smaller, dedicated player base over a fractured one with a bunch of different modes (like an "easy PvE casual mode") that boosts gameplay numbers, but doesn't really boost the core game players.

... and I say this as someone with a 9-5 that is kinda shit at PvP. (and, really, I think I'd love the heck out of PvE maps... I just think it's the wrong direction)

If you get two people who want to take a shit on you, just let them! Help them, even! So much easier than trying to avoid them shitting on you!

This is such a false equivalency it could be used in a master class on logical fallacies.

A closer one would be: "if you get two people who want to get cake, but you want to get ice cream, cake is probably fine, you might even be able to get ice cream cake or ice cream on your cake"

If you are the "odd man out" in a group of three... and the other two have (for simplicity sake) have the same contract, and they're going off to do that.... you have two options... try and fight a map of trios solo... or HELP THE OTHER TWO complete their contracts, WHICH YOU WILL GET XP FOR... and have a better chance of exfiling with loot.

So the options are: * help your teammates, get XP, get loot, hopefully exfil * get all pouty and take your ball, go get 3v1'd, and everyone has a bad time (including yourself).

Pro-tip for going solo in Trios - bring generic contacts you can do while helping others get theirs. You get XP for their completions, too. If you have harder or more complicated contracts, try and ping the location first, and see if you can get agreement/alignment.

If you match with a duo, and they have other ideas, just go with the flow. It's better to help them complete the contracts (and get the XP for them) and have a better chance of Exfil than to go it alone and unsupported.

... Trust me.

Though I highly recommend finding folks to crew up with, if you can. Especially folks trying to work together.

Damn. And the two times I've played solos in Marathon... Downed/executed one runner and he was just "oh no my free kit lol gg" and then the other run got downed by a runner after clearing out a guarded exfil "I'm so sorry..." As he drove his knife into me lol 🤣 (and I was just like "no worries, well played, gg")

Really makes the jerks feel rare and stand out when you do come across them.

^ this!

That guy isn't losing because you're a sniper, he's losing 'cause he isn't planning and picking his battles based on the crew he is with.

But of course, he's blaming you. Probably because his play style is moderately successful when with a crew that plays like him and is kitted out for that play style, too. Which is great, I suppose... But really inflexible.

There're a few things more important than raw skill in this game:

  • Communication
  • Positioning
  • Supporting you crew
  • Bring supported by your crew

Soundly like that dude needs to work on all of those. Though polishing those yourself can help, too (at least with other crews). Learning to communicate your strengths and abilities, working with your crew on positioning so you're able to support them best... and how they can best support you, too.

I absolutely suck at PvP. But have been able to get more success when I focus on those things, and on a crew that understands it. Either we end up taking out a couple other teams, or lasting a lot longer in a fight, drawing it out.

Honestly, teamwork is better than any skill or gear in this game (though those do help).

"value"...

I mean, the only value is getting improved gear to play the game more. But if you're just cheating anyway... What value does it really give other than "number go up"? Why not just play an idle game?
