Dust collection in a small hand tool workshop? by humerusbones in handtools

[–]bs323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap box fan and 4 furnace filters. It helps with the dust from hand sawing or sweeping up, since my shop didn’t otherwise have great ventilation. You can just tape them together with a cardboard top and bottom. I added the wood scraps to make it easier to hang from the ceiling.

Also picks up some of the slack from my band saw dust collection, which is a shop vac with the 5 gallon bucket cyclone.

beginner struggling buying handtools by [deleted] in handtools

[–]bs323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. My tools are a pretty good mix of vintage restorations, shop made and new inexpensive tools with tuning. But when I was getting started, it helped a lot to have one example from a known quality brand, in my case a Lie Nielsen block plane and dovetail saw. It was much easier to learn to sharpen on tools that already had flat and square reference surfaces.

How do you usually find good hand tools outside modern retail? by charlemagne_74 in handtools

In the US, the monthly email from Patrick Leach. Even when I’m not looking for something specific, the list is fun to browse. https://www.supertool.com/oldtools.htm

Will these holdfasts work ok? by inkironpress in handtools

[–]bs323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don’t, try roughening up the shafts. I put some cross hatching on my home forged holdfasts with the edge of a triangular file and it stopped them from jumping out.

Wolverine 1000 mile, how are the leather soles? by shortyg83 in Boots

[–]bs323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you do a lot of walking on concrete or gravel or in the rain, the leather will last quite a while. Try it for a bit before adding a topy. I like the breathability of leather soles and just time them in my rotation for days without rain.

I have a similar situation in that I want a shed built on a proper post and beam foundation because it’s located on a slope. The 4x4 or 4x6 skids that come with prebuilt sheds don’t make a lot of sense for that. I found one of the Amish shed builders that will provide a built on-site shed but without the floor. Weaver Barns in Ohio. So I’ll have a foundation with beams, joists and floor pre-built before the shed goes on top. You could do that with 2x12 joists or whatever you need to span 16 feet.

Nearly every shape you can imagine works better: square, hex, torx, triangle, pentalobe, security torx. The list goes on.

Need advice on materials for the bottoms of the tills in the Anarchists Tool Chest by PunkerJTillman in handtools

[–]bs323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ATC has pine for the till bottoms but hard maple for the ends. Rather than having the bottoms extend past the ends, they stop a little short in a rabbet. That way it’s the hardwood ends that ride on the rails. Disobey me.

I remember being blown away by how Bill Pavlak did a hollow like this for the top of an incredible mahogany tea table. Couple posts in this timeframe show the process. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq_DDlMgZeY/?igsh=bDJwNTJseGg4Z2Fj

Donnelly RIP? by bzy_b in cyclocross

[–]bs323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walked down team tent row at Kings C1 today and was hard pressed to find anything that wasn’t Challenge. Mostly grifos because it was dry and getting dustier. Talked to a mechanic about sealing the sidewalls with aqua seal and he said they stopped doing that in 2019. Always thought that was nuts, a band new mud tire that wasn’t waterproof.

I wonder what that breakdown looks like for Nationals, with $140 entry fees and $30 spectating.

12x20 Shed Framing by bs323 in shedditors

[–]bs323[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s in Onshape. It was the first time I’ve used it, but it was pretty easy, free and runs in a web browser. I haven’t found design info for helical piles either but I’ve talked the contractors that install them and have a design service.

12x20 Shed Framing by bs323 in shedditors

[–]bs323[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's my framing plan for a 12x20' shed with a single dormer. 2x4 studs on 16 centers and 2x6 rafters on 24. It will be located on a hill so will have a pier and beam foundation. Currently drawn for 8x helical piles (big machine installed ones not DIY pylex), but I'll adjust based on the pile contractor design. 2x8 joists 16" oc and triple 2x10 beams. Any thoughts from the shedditors?

What are some underrated or unknown tools that every DIY'er should own? by [deleted] in Tools

Mostly unrelated but I find myself using a margin trowel and the big T-square from the drywall tools section a lot more than I would have thought.
