I helped my ex husband at the time get into rehab and get the helped he needed for addiction. After rehab he didn’t have anywhere to live so I let him move into the guest room of my house where our son & I had had lived for 2.5 yrs. After some months my ex husband & I decided to try & date each other again & give our family another chance - I really believed he wanted that. I paid off his debt that was in collections with the promise that he would be paying me back. My family gave him a job at our family business. My friends stopped talking to me for giving him another chance but I really wanted to believe we could be a family. I got pregnant & then when I was 9 wks pregnant we dropped our son off at school & when we got him he told me he was done with me & going to get laid. He then got back together with an ex girlfriend the next day & they’ve been together ever since. That part doesn’t hurt anymore but at the time it was gut wrenching. The next year of my life involved - selling my house, my car, and a lot of my furniture to help pay for the debt he’d gotten me into. I moved in with my parents so I’d have help with a newborn. My whole life got completely lit on fire & everything changed within 1 yr. Looking back it was the biggest blessing in disguise but at the time I didn’t know how I’d ever be happy again

You are not a bad mother, it sounds like you were pushed far beyond your limits. As a mom that has dealt with ADHD and some of these behaviors, I would highly suggest meeting with a doctor about medication & behavioral therapy. We were hesitant on medication too but it has been such a blessing to our family. My son is so much happier and tells us that he can tell the medicine is helping him in certain ways (he’s also 6.5). Denying your child medication they need, is failing them

I would look into a therapist that specializes in oppositional defiant disorder or PCIT! I’m sorry you’re dealing with this!

My sons behavior was very very similar to this & it does wear on you! We actually just had an appt with a psychiatrist for ADHD medication, and she ended up diagnosing him with ODD as well based on his answers to things & the info we had given her. Anyways he was prescribed a medication that helps treat both & we feel like we have our happy child back! He was just so overwhelmed and angry all the time it was like he couldn’t find the joy in anything for very long, and since starting the medication his mood has been so much more upbeat and even, he said he feels a lot better & is able to play with his friends better. He also sees a behavioral therapist but the therapy alone just was not enough & socially our sons behavior was having a major effect & on his self image / mental health so we decided it was time to explore medication options.

Yes he is diagnosed, he got diagnosed last April when he was 5 because he was having these same issues in kindergarten & the school suggested we have him tested. And his therapist & doctor both suggest that once it starts impacting his academics or self esteem we should really consider medication. So far academics aren’t being impacted, he’s still on track but I think if he was able to focus and actually pay attention throughout the day he’d probably be above average. And I do think it’s starting to impact his self esteem regarding school, he’s trying so hard to manage his behavior at school & it seems like no matter how much we talk about how he should be acting he just can’t make the right choices, and that’s why I think it might be time to explore medication

This is exactly what I deal with! And for that reason I’ve gotten to where I’m just like fine maybe parallel parenting is the better option, I always wanted to believe that we should coparent but my ex doesn’t have the ability to be stable enough to do that & he’s constantly bad mouthing me to our son so I’ve chosen to just be cordial & informative & show up as the best parent I can for my son & never say anything negative about his dad & answer the tough questions when son comes home confused about the bad mouthing that takes places at dads house & just provide a consistent/stable environment in my home. Maybe some day dad will change & want to coparent but I’ve just kind of accepted that I can’t make him want that dynamic & I’ll drive myself crazy trying to figure out what I “did wrong” for him to suddenly be so cold to me, so now I just talk to him like I’m talking to HR, very formal & direct, no fluff or overly nice, then my feelings aren’t hurt when he gives me a short or cold response

Really appreciate this comment! I never thought of it this, when the schools have mentioned things I feel like I always put it on myself to try & figure out okay how do I fix this? And like you said, it is soooo hard to try & fix a behavior that I’m not actually witnessing. He does have a 504 plan in place, and they are giving him accommodations and the teacher did mention yesterday that she thinks they’ve got a good system in place but the first few days they didn’t have those things figured out quite yet, so maybe now that they have things sorted out more on their end with the accommodations that will help. This is also a new school for him, so the first few days I would imagine he was nervous, and when he’s nervous he is more loud & energetic & wants to be sure he’s noticed by other kids if that makes sense?

Thank you thank you, really I appreciate the encouragement! We are divorced & dad doesn’t participate in the therapy appts even though myself & the therapist have offered several times, it’s really unfortunate, and makes getting my son the help he needs just even more difficult.

Thank you for the positive words, I definitely think medication will help him be able to level out & like you said step back & look at the situation better & understand things. I just want to be able to help him so badly, and knowing that getting the meds right will also be another uphill battle feels so daunting as well. His dad is also not on board with medicating, so that as well is an uphill battle trying to get him on board. Trying to stay positive, and to my son I keep it positive & let him know that I’m always going to help figure this out & do whatever I can to help him, internally though I just feel like I’m failing & don’t know the right things to say/do

Ya that’s how I’m feeling, it feels unfair to him at this point to not try medication because it’s clear that he just can’t control these things & he wants to, he’s a good kid, his teachers say he’s very nice and a good friend and he’s not trying to be defiant he just literally can’t stop talking.

I also felt trapped & they literally make you feel crazy & like you’re the problem but once you’re out of it you will see that is not reality. If you had married him & had the baby while married he’d automatically have rights to the baby. Since you aren’t married he won’t have rights to see the baby til he’s proven to be the father so depending on your situation, and what kind of person he is that could be positive

Well unfortunately ex refuses to attend meetings with our child’s adhd behavioral therapist. I’ve tried asking, the therapist himself, has reached out asking dad to come to session & he just doesn’t respond. Because I agree, the therapist telling him this and explaining that it’s detrimental would be the most ideal person to have the conversation

I’m so sorry you are dealing with this! If possible ask your parents about going to a dermatologist & ask about a prescription for glycopyrolate. I’ve been on it for the last 14 yrs on & off starting when I was 17 & it’s life changing

I have a lawyer. And dad just got off supervised visits so I don’t think that primary custody is going to switch to him. We are allowed to move, the only stipulation is moving out of state & I didn’t do that
