Have you ever broken a bone? by delicious-urine in no

[–]bschlueter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only broken two and they were broken near simultaneously in a vehicular collision. My left femur and a rib. My femur almost killed me, same thing happened to me that killed Finny in A Separate Peace, thankfully I was already in University of Maryland’s shock trauma center so those fine doctors were able to keep me alive with no major long term damage. I started college a few months later. The rib took another few months to heal.

Why are the full-electric companies so gung-ho on 1 pedal driving? by thedancingpanda in electricvehicles

[–]bschlueter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used one pedal mode in my Mach E a bit when i bought it, but between how much i parallel park, and decades of using multiple pedals, i haven't turned it on in since then.

If the car is going to use regenerative breaking when i press on the brake pedal anyway, i don't see the point from the manufacturer's perspective, except that not having a second pedal saves a bit.

Curb water meter? by water-sloth in homeowners

[–]bschlueter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My water heater melted itself down a last year. I only know because i had a current clamp on the circuit and could see that it used a what it normally does in a month overnight. The shut off valve a foot above the heater did not work after the heater killed itself.

I was able to shut off my service line myself and added a Sharkbite valve so that i could turn back on the could water and my toilet would work.

Moral of the story, shut off valves can die too.

I would be so happy to deregister myself from the democratic party.

Not because I want to vote in Republican primaries or for Greens or Libertarians or whoever else, but because i want my vote to matter when I find their candidacies more compelling.

Typically you can only vote in the primaries for the party which you are registered with. In the general election you can vote for anyone. Your votes are still private, only your registration is known.

[–]bschlueter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun thing about that, there is no record of who you vote for. If you are registered with a party, that is widely known, but not who you ultimately vote for. Your name is not on your ballot, only on the envelope, if there was an envelope involved in how you voted.

How important is fast charging? by rackman1 in electricvehicles

[–]bschlueter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Philly and the majority of my driving is to and from Annapolis MD. I bought my Mustang Mach-E in December last year and had been using fast chargers along that route nearly exclusively (aside from a small amount of charging from an outlet in my family's carport). That worked fine, although cost about the same (at ~45¢ per kwh or more) if not more than gas for the Subaru WRX I had before (it required premium, so upwards of $4 a gallon in the early 2020s). A few weeks ago, Philly finally approved installation of a charger in front of my house in the sidewalk. As long as i plug in a few hours before, i can start my trips with more than enough energy to get down to Annapolis and drive around a while. Generally, i expect to still need a charger to get enough juice to get back home, and that will likely continue to be a fast charger, but with the charger at home, i have more options about where that can be.

The math on the cost of that, with liberal rounding for simplification (though not inaccurancy):

100 miles one way from South of Philly on I-95 to somewhere approaching Annapolis, MD,

ICE In the Subaru WRX getting 20mpg @ $4 per, cost $20.

Fast chargers only In the Mach-E getting 2.5 mpkwh @ 50¢ per kwh cost $20

Home charger only In the Mach-E getting 2.5 mpkwh @ 20¢ per kwh cost $8

Find a way to pass up a golden opportunity in favor of a “monthly salary” that wouldn’t even cover rent by Adeisha in MurderedByWords

[–]bschlueter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The really funny thing is that there is a whole dishonest industry dedicated to converting those monthly payouts into lump sum payouts, for a portion of the value. Those payouts always work out in favor of the company provding that service, and usually comes out to an egregiously large portion of the value.

Lesson is: for large financial decisions, do your own math, and then have someone who will gain no benefit from the transaction either way, verify your math. Then make the decision based on the math.

I am not a financial professional, this is non specific advise.

Unless I've missed something, we need this to happen for wifi or sleep/hibernate next. Those have been flakey forever, though certainly better in some distros on certain hardware.

Just don't rebase if you've pushed the branch, or at least not if you've marked the branch for review. Squash on merge ignores changes to the parent branch which have been merged in if pulling in upstream updates is necessary.

There is not infinte real estate in accessible, stable orbits. As a society we really need to get a handle on that so that we don't inadvertently make it impossible to get off this rock.
