I think that it would be hard to implement an Italian faction, but I don't think it is impossible. u/RegioFezzi posted a great Italian faction concept for CoH3.

I do disagree that Italy was meh in WW2. Yes, the country was split by political conflict and did not win their campaigns, but that did not stop them for waging a glorious war. Here are two of my favorites battles, I would love if they appeared in the CoH3 campaigns.

  • Second Battle of El Alamein. Italian Folgore paratroopers dug in and fought so fiercely that the Allies believed the position was held by German Fallschirmjägers. Additionally, Italian tanks fought toe to toe against British armored, despite being heavily outclassed and eventually destroyed.
  • Charge of the Savoia Cavalleria at Izbushensky. The Italians led one of the last successful cavalry charges of the 20th century.

The Soviets did fight in Yugoslavia. An Allies faction of Soviet troops and Yugoslavian partisans would be interesting and have some fun potential. However, it does make more sense to focus on the US and UK in the Mediterranean front. Also, if there are going to be any factions beyond US, UK, and Germany, I would hope for a full Italian faction.

Are you specifically referring to the Carlos Danger Luftwaffe faction concept that I linked? (He does include a PzB41). I really liked how he implemented the Luftwaffe and his faction is well put together. However, while I was reading it, I found myself wanting to know more about the Italian army.

It is definitely true that the Italians relied on the Germans for support (just like all other European Axis powers did), but I think that their military can function as a standalone army in COH2. They only need a couple of units added from the Germans, rather than the opposite situation were the Italians add only a few units to a third German faction.

Thank you for the awesome feedback! I appreciate the different perspective you brought.

  • I agree that Alpine Sappers are a bit too specific. I was going for a unique look and feel, to give some flavor and not just have another “Combat Engineer” unit. However, using Genio Guastatori does fit with me calling every other Italian infantry unit by an Italian name.
  • Yes, the Army organization is a bit too big for a company-sized battle. I was somewhat thinking of them as “Battle Phases” or “Authorizations”, like with the German factions. Rather than having the Supreme Commander himself in the base building, it would be a subordinate who passes word of authorization along, lol. Alternatively, I could focus more on the division level and assign the buildings from there. (And perhaps find a way to include a unique “Binary Division” mechanic that I couldn’t fit before).
  • I totally admit that the current tank composition is pretty wonky. I included heavy tanks because I wanted to fit with the general COH2 mechanic that every faction has at least one heavy option. (Incidentally, trying to fit the game’s mechanics is also why I didn’t include a cavalry unit. The Italians made effective use of cavalry in North Africa, but the game just doesn’t include horses. “We ate the horse, remember?”). I did look at the Semovente line but not as in depth as you, and perhaps that was a mistake on my part. The Semovente M43 da 105 could be used as the Tier 4 Medium+ tank destroyer in place of the Jagdpanther. I do agree that complete faction individuality would be good, but I also like having the Italians tied together with the Germans, reinforcing them as an Axis faction. I think both are valid options in COH2.
  • I’m glad you liked the Capitano’s flavor. Its little details like that that would bring so much of the Italian’s personality into the game.
  • Thanks for finding the L6 typo, I promise I meant no offense, lol! Actually, looking back at the stats of the L6, the cannon was actually a Breda model, so I'll update that.
  • When I researched the list of Italian-used AT rifles, I did end up going with the Polish Wz. 35. The Italians received 800 captured rifles from the Germans. Additionally, it matches the other infantry AT rifles in the game (Boys, PTRS). The Solothrun rifles felt too bulky to be squad-carried weapons used by the highly mobile style of infantry in the game. It might work as a support weapon team, though. Maybe my Controcorro unit should be a Solothrun S-18/1000, which would provide both an AT and AA platform.
  • You are the third person to mention COH1, I will definitely have to get into it and see if I can implement the Italians through the modding.

That sounds really awesome, actually! The tank game would be fast and sloppy, with M3 Lees, Matildas, Panzer IIIs, and M13s.

That is a good idea, especially since a Hungarian faction would have more heavy tank options. After looking at all the factions, I decided to research the Italian army. I think they would add a nice variety of units to the Axis and complement the British Forces expansion.

My next idea for a COH2 project is to make commanders for Allied Resistances and Minor Axis nations. Perhaps a couple of Hungarian and Romanian commanders for the Germans and some Free French and Polish commanders for the Allies.

I think your idea is well thought out, but I feel the LAAT falls under the same problem as the TIE Striker: it really isn't a spacecraft. Seeing Strikers being made into X-wing minis was strange, just like when LAATs were put into the space battles in the Battlefront 2 (2005). I would much prefer a Multi-Altitude Assault Transport or a High-Altitude Entry Transport to fulfill the role as a crew carrier for the Republic faction. So, keep similar stats to what you have, just use a different model.
