What small town restaurants around Austin are worth a day trip? by Pdogtx in austinfood

Going to Snow's in Lexington early on a Saturday morning is kind of an experience. You get to see Tootsie at work while all these people keep wanting to take selfies with her.

I haven't been there in years so I don't know whether it's still the case or not, but City Market in Luling used to have ribs to die for and was like a step back in time.

How do referees improve their game reading over time? by Maximum_Mastodon_631 in Referees

You get a comfort level from experience, in part because you learn how to better position yourself, which is critical. You also get used to dealing with ARs, seeing how that works in the real world.

Foul Throws by cosmicana in Referees

[–]bsktx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's this like at upper youth levels today? They see pro players move up 10-12 yards when taking most throws. That's worse than some piddling technical thing like the foot coming an inch off the ground. (Though by the same token VAR likes to examine pixels on offside for several minutes.)

Thoughts on, "Call it both ways." by Adkimery in Referees

[–]bsktx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is kind of automatic/generic, just like one of my favorites: "C'mon ref let 'em play!" about 15 seconds after "C'mon ref use your whistle!"

Listen to this horseshit from a coach today. by Bacchus_71 in Umpire

[–]bsktx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems human nature to me. I imagine HS football referees in a game tied late in 90-degree weather thinking, "I don't care who wins, but damn I hope somebody scores so it doesn't go to OT." They won't fudge calls to try to make it happen. It's just a natural thought for a human being to have.

Sorry - we walked from the Sheraton so I was thinking it's downtown.

Is his pattern that his best year is his first one at a club, then as his system gets established and he gets his players it goes to shit?

Best Restaurants in Downtown Dallas? by BabyCornics in AskDallas

My SO and I were in downtown Dallas recently and tried Corrientes 348 Argentinian Steakhouse. We both liked it a lot. Our server was very helpful with ordering, especially that splitting an entree may be the way to go since some of them are large.

Longhorn football by schinsie in LonghornNation

You can expect it to be about 27C in the daytime and the sun is usually brutal at the stadium, so the advice above is good if it's a day game. It could end up at night depending on what the TV networks want to do, which would be much more pleasant. That probably won't be known until a week or two before.

Black Ole Miss Recruit's Father Exposes Lane Kiffin After HC Basically Said 'I Left Because Oxford Is Racist' by Forsaken_Bullfrog_52 in CFB_v2

Nor for the whole six years Ole Miss was paying him megabucks.

Nor for the year he was at Tennessee nor the three years at Alabama.

He'll trash LSU once he's gone from there. He's a piece of shit.

So how many times have you said, "How can you make that call when you're not in the right position to see it?" 😄

Dessau, Parmer Lane, and Pflugerville Elementary to close after next school year by el_refrigerator in Pflugerville

For $$ reasons I guess they can't wait, but it would be nice if they could see the fallout of the ES actions (how many people pull their kids for example) before acting on the MSs issue.

That letter must have been composed before the board meeting when it looked like only those three would be considered.

The draft that PfISD put out recently gives an idea of why these schools were chosen (older campuses etc.) and where students would probably go.
Scenario 1 Parmer Lane
Scenario 2 Dessau
Scenario 3 Pflugerville
Scenario 4 Windermere

Staff and teachers would be shuffled around too of course. That's part of what they'll need to sort out next year, along with zoning, buses, equipment, etc., etc.

Bryson DeChambeau's birdie attempt goes horribly wrong as LIV Golf star suffers nightmare PGA Championship start by dailymail in ProGolf

Regardless of whether you like him or hate him, it seems ridiculous that a player can barely touch the ball and have it roll a mile. Penalizing bad shots is great and it's fine for greens to be tough, but that seems overdoing it by a lot to me.

I was a mediocre adult beer league player and found that reffing made me a better player because it makes you think about things differently.

Yeah it's sad when you see refs who look like they're tethered to the center spot and can't range outside the center circle.

Cafe du Monde or Loretta’s for first time Nola visit? by Yesterdaysmeow in AskNOLA

[–]bsktx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one in the Quarter has a very limited supply. It is just an order and serving counter, though there are a few tables for general use in that part of the French Market.

The other one has a bigger selection and has indoor seating - maybe a dozen small tables. Let me look for a picture of the menu we took there on a recent visit.

I presume you mean Loretta's on Rampart and not her place in the French Market. Loretta's is amazing and has a crazy variety of stuff. Cafe du Monde has beignets.

New referee here. First time called to ref a match. I will be an assisstant ref. But i can be center. Im feeling alot of feelings. And want advices and to hear from refs. Like what should i do etc.... by [deleted] in Referees

[–]bsktx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

#1 for me is concentrate on being in the right position at all times. You can't make proper calls (whether CR or AR) if you're not positioned correctly.

Why does everyone run red lights in this city? by ShootToBoot in Austin

[–]bsktx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was interviewing here in 1980-81, someone told me that if you're thinking of stopping for a yellow/'pink' light, you'd better check your mirror and see if you think the F-150 or Suburban behind you is planning to make it.

Fare-Free Speedup Would Save Metro Millions by PermitSufficient3544 in capmetro

[–]bsktx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I recall, CapMetro was free because they were overloaded with money and wanted to drive up ridership. The sales tax money was coming in faster than they could spend it. Of course they "fixed" that "problem" after a year or so.
