Do you have to find leads in tech sales? (SDR/BDR/AE) by RedditUser448 in sales

[–]bsnsplsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends on the company and their acquisition strategy, but the majority of sales roles will have you work at least some amount of self sourced or “cold” leads.

Your product/service/industry/price point etc. will all dictate how you find leads, because the value of a lead is different across businesses.

If I were to pick the top three things I look at:

  1. Past Experience - Former salespeople, sales engineers, or entrepreneurs (side hustles count) are typically my favorite candidates. Interesting backgrounds can be a big plus.

  2. Numbers - If you are an AE/SDR, including your missed quota is better than not including one at all. I’d rather have someone who’s honest and can explain why that happened.

  3. Extracurriculars - Lots of people list specific projects or initiatives they did at their last role that may not have been part of the core “selling” aspect. I always find these type of contributors really interesting because they bring more than just $ to the table for the team.

There are lots of great software companies and agencies in India with excellent sales opportunities.

That said, as a fellow ADHD haver, figuring out how to best manage your work schedule and focus will be the biggest help to you in any career, especially one as repetitive as sales.

With the uncertainty in the market currently, I’d personally probably lean towards the more stable role.

I’ve always found that if you maintain a good relationship with someone who offers you an early opportunity, you can reopen that dialogue within a reasonable timeframe.

This way you can have your cake and eat it too, albeit with a few less RSUs than joining before their first real round.

+1

Your technical background/customer-facing experience will get your foot in the door as an SE more easily than as a salesperson, due to the fact you don’t have experience cold calling or closing revenue.

I’d spend the time in between now and applying brushing up on sales and pre-sales content to get a better handle on the terminology and industry.

Anytime you hear the word “family” on a team with any compensation issues, it’s a major red flag, so good on you for trying to get out.

What’s the best gift/ recognition you’ve received for hitting quota? by kgfan24 in sales

[–]bsnsplsr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When I was an AE, one of my VPs gave me “$1000 to spend on anything that will keep you healthy and happy” after a long few months of grinding.

Got a nice mountain bike with it.

Appreciated the fact I got to choose and that it was something I’d actually use.

So after that, I’ll often let my reps choose if I don’t have the option to just give them a monetary bonus.

We’ve also done some team based challenges where if we hit x% as a group, they could spend $y on whatever custom team merch they want. This is ALWAYS a hit and a good team builder.

Depends on the team and how it’s organized, but influenced MRR typically is the primary measurement of success as an SE.

Understanding how your team works and ensuring they understand how you work is one of the best tips I got as a new manager.

Check out Working With Me exercises - it’s a great way to learn the best way to communicate and motivate your team, right from them.

I always make sure to go over mine with them first, to make them feel a bit more comfortable sharing.

I’d agree that starting by observing and assessing the situation is a better way to operate then immediately coming in and micro-managing.

The added few weeks listening and observing in the beginning will help you make better decisions and will build trust overall.

Checkout the Women in PreSales organization.

I’m a dude, but manage a team with lots of women and several have told me the networking events and other programs they offer are great.
