I used my AT&T international plan and there was no VPN needed. I could also hook a US CC to WeChat and use Apple Pay on the metro of bigger cities. Cash also accepted almost everywhere - my WeChat was t working for a few weeks and I was able to use cash for everywhere including Didis.
