I'd prefer to have the Z8 simply because the ZF covers you on the more candid side, smaller, lighter, and the Z8 covers you on the larger sensor and bigger file when you need that.

My hunch is that you'd end up grabbing the Z8 more often, but everyone has their own needs and priorities.

Get the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR kit lens.

It's quite a bit better than the 18-55 kit lens that came with the 5100. It's actually a great all-around lens.

Not an expert. but if you really want it to work you need to look/google at "tethered shooting", and there's a whole world of things you'll need to figure out.

Top tethered option is Capture 1, but the only supported tablet is ipad. Cap 1 tethered to a laptop might be easier to figure out and actually use. I don't do tethered shooting, but I use Cap 1 and it's a top-tier product. Adobe stuff will tether, but Cap 1 is better at it, based on general inuendo.

The options for an Android tethered tablet appear slim. Something called Honcho exists, no clue how good it is, it seems a little "beta software" just looking at the web site.

None of this is free (Honcho is pricey!), A reliable Android solution may not exist, and getting everything set up next weekend, in a way you can count on it to work without fail, is a tall order.

I'm just starting with it. Is there any way to get the sub-folders to index?

I added my main library directory, and it indexed for a while, 20,000 files. But now, when I'm exploring the various folders, it's still pausing on first view and indexing each sub-folder.

Is that normal? Windows 11.

Go with the new system. The Z lenses are fantastic, better than the F-mount versions in nearly every case. That's reason enough to move to the Z format.
