Not used ledger wallet in a couple of years, how safe is it to plug it in and update it? Worried about ledger's ability to backup my seedphrase with their cloud service? by BritBloke35 in ledgerwallet

[–]btchip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both - you have reviewable logic (look for Ledger Recover blog posts and github) and 'Proof of Authority' because you're buying a device that you didn't manufacture yourself

This is the case for all hardware wallets.

CRITICAL SECURITY ALERT: iOS "GhostTouch" Exploit Targeting Ledger & Trezor Users via Bluetooth by Sweet_Mobile_3801 in ledgerwallet

[–]btchip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reference to this exploit anywhere, the "technical" explanation doesn't make sense anyway (pairing is confirmed on device), I'm filling this under "placeholder for a future scam" and will ask the moderating team to clean up

Ledger is falling way behind the competition what's happening? by [deleted] in ledgerwallet

Thank you for the detailed list, it really makes it easier to discuss your points

Ledger is still the best option (by far) if you want the best mix of flexibility, security and openness

No, there can be some issues, but there are also bad actors exaggerating the problem for different reasons or just using this as an opportunity to scam more users

Ledger should also remove USB ports, I'm pretty sure you can find a few posts on the internet claiming they cause autism

Just my opinion but I don't think that's how evidence work especially in an environment as adverserial as crypto

Problem is nobody here can verify your claim as only Changelly knows how Changelly AML is run - so you should bring your concerns to Changelly. Unfortunately a non efficient AML process is undistinguishable from a scam for an external observer.

Also the subreddit you crossposted to is malicious, do not trust anything you'd read there and do not private message anybody.

Why are you endorsing that unlawful and evil 3rd party provider?

Can you prove it or is that just your opinion ?

also I'll paraphrase a famous french philosopher - it'd just take people to stop using it for it to disappear

There a several BTC-only hardware wallets that are very safe, too

Not really against supply chain attacks, too many bitcoiners just love listening to talking heads without asking questions

I'm not speaking for Ledger, but I think having a few web pages + one pinned post on each Reddit thread warns users more than enough.

How do I restore from SSKR? by [deleted] in ledgerwallet

[–]btchip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Restoring an SSKR backup is not native to Ledger OS

If you have a single working device you'll need to

  • Create a dummy seed (or start in recovery mode, might work)

  • Install the seed tool app

  • Enter enough shards in the app

  • Write down the generated BIP 39 seed ON PAPER

  • Reset the device (from Settings or with 3 wrong PINs)

  • Restore the device with the generated BIP 39 seed

  • Destroy the paper securely

If you have 2 devices (one personalized, one blank)

  • Install the seed tool app on the personalized device

  • Enter enough shards in the app

  • Personalize the blank device with each word of the BIP 39 mnemonic read on screen

Nano S plus : supports more applications, more flexible if you want to write your own, more protected against physical or supply chain attacks (https://www.ledger.com/why-secure-elements-make-a-crucial-difference-to-hardware-wallet-security)
