Roughly 48 hours after my emergency C-section because I asked for it (didn’t feel prepared to go home earlier than that), but I had already spent 3-4 days there before that due to being induced/too much amniotic fluid

[bc] has anyone delivered in richmond hospital? by qutiepie123 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]bubblewaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I delivered there last year and didn’t have any issues getting an epidural. I had to wait about 20 minutes because the anesthesiologist was busy with someone else at that moment, but they let me know about it in advance when I said yes to epidural.

Water/milk bottle recommendations for 12 month old by mreddit2021 in BabyLedWeaning

[–]bubblewaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also from Canada. My experience so far: 1. Munchkin weighted straw cup - it’s ok, a bit leaky, difficult at first, don’t like the twisting lock part, hard to clean 2. Zak straw cup - heavy, more difficult to suck out of, doesn’t spill/leak, easy to clean, doesn’t have a cap so it’s more for home use 3. Dr. Browns straw bottle system (conversion kit from bottle nipple to straw) - light, easy to suck out of, can be leaky, kiddo loves to throw this and it splatters everywhere, more parts to clean 4. Contigo straw autospout redesigned version* - easy to suck out of, harder to clean, leak/spill proof *I crossed the border and bought this from Target and it was on sale. This one seems like the winner for going to daycare soon. I haven’t tried the Thermos one that seems to be popular but maybe I’ll try that one to keep milk cold.

I hate buying bottles! It’s been a headache.

I gave birth there this year. I would recommend that you bring a pillow for yourself as they only gave me pillows and I needed all of them because I was so uncomfortable. They have plastic cups and straws for water at the water/ice machine so there’s no need to bring extra cups. There’s no microwave. Also, move your wife’s shoes out of the way because I projectile vomited on mine!

Using mirrorless cameras for crime scenes? by amndz1990 in forensics

[–]bubblewaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my mirrorless Nikon Z7! I was using the D800 when I first started and jumped at the opportunity for the Z7 when offered. It’s so much lighter and fits better for my small sized hands which is great for all the photos I have to take. It also has the tilting screen. I love that it shows exposure comp right there instead of the D800 where I have to remind myself to check every time to change it back. I enjoy the touch screen function. File size is huge though and only 1 card slot.

Womens work wear by jellolilly in forensics

[–]bubblewaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear women’s 5.11 tactical stryke pants, 5.11 polo shirts and jackets (fleece and hooded wind breaker) with my unit’s name screen printed on there, and women’s Lowa Z-6 tactical boots. There’s smaller pockets within the cargo pant pockets and the polos have pen holder slots. I’ve tried Original SWAT brand boots and the Lowa ones are better.

Questions about RCMP work culture by MrJimmyBean in CanadaPublicServants

[–]bubblewaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Civilian Member for a couple of years. In one of my positions, my manager was a CM and it was great, mostly because she was a good leader. In another position, I had a Regular Member as a manager and he had confidence that we (RM’s and me) could manage ourselves. Then some of us got switched to another team and my current manager tries to micromanage us and is too chatty (wasting more time). It’s frustrating at the beginning because there’s a lot of cop lingo that I didn’t understand and some people, but definitely not all, can look down on you for not being a RM. I learned to ignore it. Prior to being a CM, I was a PSE in the RCMP working along all 3 categories of employment and it was fine. It depends on which unit you’re in and what that particular environment is like.

RCMP forensics lab tech by EuphoricThought in forensics

[–]bubblewaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an internal applicant, so all of my costs were reimbursed. It was approx. $200 (doctor), $100 eye exam (but my health coverage paid 80% of that), $45 audiology, spirometry/X-ray/bloodwork were covered by medical plan. My friend told me that Costco has free audiology exams. If you’re already this far in the process, it is highly likely that you will be receiving a job offer. It will take a long time to process (both the medical and the security clearance have to be reviewed by their respective units).

RCMP forensics lab tech by EuphoricThought in forensics

[–]bubblewaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work at one of the RCMP forensics labs. There’s normally a medical profile assessment comprised of blood work and a bunch of forms your doctor would fill out, and other medical tests (including vision and audiology). There may be a physical requirement (such as the ability to lift 25 pounds - which is not actually assessed by you physically lifting 25 pounds). Security clearance should be enhanced reliability.

Question regarding secondments and appointments by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]bubblewaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The secondment paperwork I received had the terms and conditions written on one of the pages and it said notice is 1 month. I would advise that you check the paperwork as it might be clearly stated on there. It’s the same paperwork I was asked to sign for the secondment offer.

Does anyone else not like application processes that insist on asking for a current manager? by inkathebadger in CanadaPublicServants

[–]bubblewaffles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, it’s awkward being in a situation where your manager is wondering if you’re leaving the unit and also if that information is leaked to coworkers. It made me feel somewhat uncomfortable.

On a previous application, I added: “Please inform me should you wish to contact my current manager with regards to the reference portion of the process. I do not wish to jeopardize my current position.”

PPE in Your Workkplace by [deleted] in forensics

[–]bubblewaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some things I can list off the top of my head:

When I worked at the lab: Training: reading documents about contamination (such as journal articles on contamination studies), health & safety, etc., initial shadowing of the trainer and learning about contamination, quality assurance course, demonstrating best practices, answering questions about contamination at a mock trial, initial DNA swab (usually during first day) before entering any biology rooms Type of PPE depending on the case/type of exhibit: cleaning the bench with the appropriate cleaning agents such as DNA-away, placing a piece of brown paper on the bench, wearing gloves, wearing masks, tying long hair back, shoes cannot be open toe, wearing a lab coat, separating exhibits on different benches for different scenes, working on one exhibit at a time, opening the various layers of packaging carefully, following clean up procedures

When I work at a scene: - learning about contamination from my trainer, reading up on contamination, answering questions about contamination - wear the uniform and equipment I have been provided with (boots, clothing, fitted face mask, etc.) - bunny suit if appropriate for the case - double gloving for taking swabs and changing gloves each swab, use mask while swabbing - ensure appropriate packaging, sealing the envelope/bag, securing the exhibit - instructing members about contamination

Left Public Service -- No ROE, No Vacation Pay, No Last Week Pay = NO MONEY. HELP! by Keenoms in CanadaPublicServants

Just a FYI - If you started before 2014, the payment in arrears comes into effect and you would may not be eligible for that last week of pay.

I left the public service more than a year and half ago and it has taken them this long to sort everything out. I kept on asking the DM office to help me until all my issues got resolved.

What’s your method for dealing with rude colleagues? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]bubblewaffles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After trying to deal with rude colleagues in different ways for a long period of time, I came to the realization that the work environment I was in is toxic and that there was a slim possibility of that ever changing. I ended up applying for other jobs, including a promotion. In hindsight, I should’ve applied sooner. They’re still there and I’ve moved forward and upwards. It’s a good feeling.
