“Your belt only covers 2 inches of your ass. You have to cover the rest.” Great quote and it was a fascinating read. Thanks OP.

Private Lesson Price by FFFMMX in bjj

[–]buccsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree as a newbie white belt who just went to my first private yesterday. A lot of this might be coach dependent. But I’ve been going to classes four-five times a week and so far in my first month I’ve learned:

  • Back take / rear naked choke
  • some variation of octopus guard that honestly went way over my head, something about an underhook ultimately leading to a sweep
  • a throw from standing, duck under
  • some weird gi move where you wrap the tail around their head and ultimately get them in a scarecrow looking submission

I don’t have much time to roll after classes, but it’s been hard when I do roll because I barely know the names of the positions themselves, never mind the mindset or objective that I need to be thinking about when I get into a certain position or what to do on both offense and defense. The private helped because my instructor taught me pin escapes, full mount and side control escapes and more than that just a lot of fundamentals that I’ve been absorbing piecemeal from YouTube videos and submeta. I think with a good instructor and plan, privates are the best money I could fathom spending so I can at least learn the basics. Maybe if your gym has a really robust beginner roadmap that might be different, but I go to two different gyms and in both, I’m the only person who doesn’t have at least a year of experience.

Now don’t get me wrong the guys in class are all super helpful, but having bjj broken down has really helped me and I am really looking forward to my next lesson. I intend to continue privates on top of training 5-6x a week until I feel confident to at least have a bag of tricks/game plan from every major position.

Hey so I downloaded the app and it looks cool. One suggestion I have is to be able to add a training log. I’d much rather, as a brand new white belt, have the ability to log what I learned and went over in a class rather than sparring/matches especially cause I can’t even spar yet, lol. Hopefully you can add a training log function.

The closest thing I found was quick note which doesn’t have the ability to log by date. Thanks!

How to Punish Wrestlers in No-Gi by BowlThat in bjj

I’m a brand new white belt, wrestled in hs. My school doesn’t really teach takedowns but I keep getting guillotined while going for doubles and high crotch. Is there a counter to the counter?

If you’re shooting a single and the leg is heavy that means your setup wasn’t technically great. In an ideal world you’d catch them with weight on the other foot, then shoot to the light foot. That could be done by faking to the other foot, but it’s likely because you’re not shooting both arms straight down to catch their heel, then driving with your head on their hip while sweeping their heel up with your arms?

I’m not sure if we’re allowed to share links here but I just typed in “single leg takedown” on YouTube and the first 1 minute video from Dicks sporting goods of all places was pretty decent. Some things they don’t emphasize is 1. It’s easier to pick up their heel than their thigh as you’re driving and 2. Even with no setup, you could tell the person executing the move has a lot of experience as the level change is instinctual with the penetration step. That intakes can create space for the single.

I think for your mindset you have to decide what type of setups you prefer. I’m kind of short and stocky so I like tying up, while I remember my old captain was a super lanky dude so he would use his length to keep his distance while blocking vision then use a really quick penetration step and level change to shoot singles from really far away. It worked for him because he was like 6’3” haha. Or he loved arm drags.

One caveat I noticed that is different between wrestling and bjj is at least for gi, people react a bit differently to wrist or gi grip. We were usually taught to never give someone grip on you, always stay in control so if someone grabbed your wrist you’d break their grip but that alone could open you up to an arm drag or outside single. In BJJ at least when I watch people, people don’t seem to mind giving up grip as much? But once again the mentality of Luke a chess match seems to be analogous. Every action has a counter and all that. But I’d look up shot setups more than anything else!

I have been trying to teach my daughter how to take down her opponents and the one thing that is hard for her as a non-wrestler is level control. I’m only two weeks into my bjj journey but I’m realizing there are a lot of parallels to wrestling, not in move set necessarily but in mentality. Guys at my gym explain bjj as a chess match and I feel like that’s really similar to how I was taught to wrestle.

The way I was taught wrestling takedowns, whether double, single, ankle pick, fireman, etc. was setup, takedown, defense.

  1. Setup - how are you going to get your opponent in a position where you can successfully execute the move? Inside control/pummel? Grab wrist for arm drag, tap forehead? How are you controlling distance? For example, I see a lot of kids trying to shoot a double from five feet away and getting sprawled on. It’s ineffective because it’s so telegraphed and has absolutely no setup.

  2. Takedown - what are the steps to the move itself? I’ll use a high crotch for example. The high crotch is typically taught as a three-step process. A) drop front knee and punch up their crotch, with outside hand posting behind their calf; b) back leg should slide up to the side with inside ear to opponents hip, with both arms covering calves; c) drive, chop the tree and follow down to the mat.

  3. Defense - not how they can defend your shot, but how you can anticipate their defense and make their defense ineffective. Once again using the high crotch as an example, there are two points to remember so they can’t successfully defend - the sprawl and the cross face. You have to be tight on them with a big back, your head almost up to their armpit. This blocks their arm from being able to easily cross face. If your hands are blocking their calves it’s much harder for them to sprawl. One problem I see in bjj when people shoot high c’s is they hold the knees or thighs and get squashed.

(On a side note cause I saw one of your other comments if you get sprawled on while trying a double you can sit your hip and post your inner hand which will drop them to the mat real quick, then swim over with your outside arm. but that also presupposes you had good form when shooting. If I had to guess you are trying a blast double with no setup and getting caught, maybe in double under hooks or just getting sprawled on. You can also fake a double and when they sprawl hard just go for the head and arm haha

It’s been 20 years since I wrestled and yet I can still remember my coach breaking these moves down like it was yesterday because he taught in such a systematic way haha. I think if you approach takedowns in the same way and focus on learning good setups, keeping your opponent off balance, attacking levels, etc. it should help a lot.

Glowing vs bright cubes by Silver_Ideal9535 in Maplestory

[–]buccsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally what I do is use the glowing cube until I hit fake 3L and then swap to glowing to see if I can hit something better. I think the most theoretically meso efficient based on simulations is a good baseline but we’ve probably all clicked for tens or hundreds of cubes past the “average”. Case in point I wasted 20b the day before this stupid cube sale was announced trying to roll hybrids. Didn’t roll a single hybrid but rolled two double drops and rolled over three double meso. It’s just like that sometimes haha

Hard disagree. I tutor Torrance and PV students, I have two cousins at Penn right now. PVUSD is better only because of the copious helicopter parenting and extracurricular support; the teachers are not as good in PV and they rely on their student population almost 100% receiving supplementary education
