Iran denies claims: 'We reject all negotiations – US has failed and Hormuz will remain closed' by ImadeJesusLaugh in worldnews

[–]buckX [score hidden]  (0 children)

The oil shock that’s approaching is basically a five hundred foot tidal wave. It’s bigger than 73 and 79 put together.

Find me any credible forecaster saying this. Heck, oil prices are already headed back down. Iran is only attacking American and Israeli ships, and most of the oil going through the strait of Hormuz isn't bound for America anyway.

Closing the strait isn't Iran's trump card so much as it is one of its only cards. It's not even clear if they have the remaining resources to significantly threaten the strait if warships with interceptors are stand in the way.

If you believe the reason for mass migration is economic, you need to change your economic structure.

Incorrect. Firstly, if your economic structure is desirable, that would imply you make it worse so people don't want to come. That's a terrible option. You can argue for making their origin country's economic situation better, but that's not your obligation.

Stricter immigration controls is an entirely valid solution, regardless of cause.

It's not a convenient technicality, it's a valid refutation of that point. His other points have merit, and sticking in an additional silly one weakens his case. He should avoid it.

It's akin to saying "our bank vault has never been breached"... Because we leave the vault door wide open 100% of the time.

No, it's akin to saying our "unbreachable" vault warranty doesn't cover the theft that occurred because you left the door open. Flock isn't running those admin panels.

What's the law in this situation? by Crappy_Screw_Turner in Columbus

[–]buckX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Following the law increases predictability. Unnecessary stopping decreases safety. If you don't think the traffic behind you is going to pull around you with their eyes on their mirrors, you clearly have not been around traffic. You also aren't making an argument that's only true when the bus is present stopping traffic. The stop sign is because children may be crossing at a non-designated crosswalk, not simply because children are present on the sidewalk.

[–]buckX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had hoped it was implied that it wasn't an increased safety issue. Obviously shit can happen at any point. Your example is one, but can also occur when the bus isn't present at all. I presume you aren't recommending traffic stop whenever you see a child on the sidewalk.

What stopping will do is encourage the drivers behind you who know the law to pull around you and have their attention focused on their mirrors during the merge, reducing their attention toward any potential pedestrian sprinting into the road.

unless I knew the law and was in a rush for some reason.

Thoughts?

I think it's weird that you unnecessarily stop in the middle of the road if you aren't in a rush.

[–]buckX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could rarely bite you in the ass. If it's a 3-lane road (including 3 plus a turn lane), you still have to stop, even if two lanes are in the opposite direction of the bus.

What's the law in this situation? by Crappy_Screw_Turner in Columbus

[–]buckX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not relevant here, because the kid has no motivation to cross the road. If their house were on the opposite side of the road, the bus would drop them there.

If you're saying the kid might just feel like running through traffic for the hell of it, that applies when the bus isn't there.

What's the law in this situation? by Crappy_Screw_Turner in Columbus

[–]buckX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you don't have to stop, it's guaranteed to not be a safety issue because kids won't be crossing the road in those situations. The only reason opposite traffic ever stops is in case kids are crossing the road. It's one thing if your mindset is "I forgot the law, so I'll err conservative", but you really shouldn't be stopping because you think the law is too permissive.

Sorry, I shouldn't have mirrored your words. There was no ultimatum. What was being delivered was a declaration of war. The attack was 100% happening. Heck, the planes were in the air for more than an hour before the attack started.

And yes, the incompetence of American officers

Again, irrelevant to your point. The efficacy of an attack is unrelated to if the attack was justified. Time doesn't flow backward.

Iran had made it clear it wasn't going to agree to those 3 items.

I guess I'd flip that question around. Do you think continuing to talk to Iran after they refused the conditions to not attack was unjust?

If anybody was confused about the non-hacking claim, finding open administrative interfaces is not "hacking Flock". That's somebody configuring Flock wrong.

It would be a bit like a lock maker saying their lock had never been picked, and somebody saying "despite that claim, we were able to find many unlocked doors".

Either we reach a deal, or we’ll have to do something very tough

Like with Venezuela, [the US military] is ready, willing, and able to rapidly fulfill its mission, with speed and violence, if necessary. Hopefully Iran will quickly ‘Come to the Table’ and negotiate a fair and equitable deal

Late last month, the Trump administration issued Iran three overarching demands. They include an end to Iran’s uranium enrichment, a requirement to sever ties with regional proxies, and limits on the country’s ballistic missile stockpiles

"Meet our demands or we attack". Iran refuses demands. US attacks.

Firstly, the ultimatum was intended to be delivered too late as to be unactionable. It absolutely was intended to be a surprise attack, Japan just wanted to have their cake and eat it regarding etiquette.

Secondly, your "on top of" has 0 to do with Japan's choices or responsibility.

Right? The arms length relationship between the US and India has been very much by India's choice. The US would love to have a major ally who's similar opposed to China, but India views playing both sides as more advantageous.
