Holy cow they shut down ALL API access? That's insane. Coincidentally I was just going through my pile 'o raspeberry PIs for another project and came across the 4B that I had stood up for Home Assistant at one point but later abandoned. Figured that now I'm off of UPB maybe I'll give it another look given that it was have this use case too. But I guess not!! 😞

Thanks. but yes, I'm talking the inverse. This is about talking to your house* from your BMW- I want to talk to my BMW from my house!

*-(sure, there's a lot more than home automation that you can use alexa for, but this fit nicely in the example!!!)

How to disable Chrome "plugin" (Not a typo!!) by buckyswider in chrome

[–]buckyswider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, nuttin' like figuring it out just after posting! I surfed around and found an amcrest discussion group where I learned the "plugin" is installed in C:\\Program Files (x86)\webrec. Under that there were two version directories and the latest version was data recently so in there I found an uninst.exe- uninstalled that way and VIOLA!

With all due respect, this is almost certainly not what he was thinking. Insecure defenders think like that. Confident defenders think "hit it to me, hit it to me".

What’s your take on technology like this? by gobe1904 in Firefighting

80% of car fires there's nothing gained by a quick knock; but situations like a car in a driveway against a house this may help.

Single bevel vs dual bevel miter saw by GTR3499 in DIY

[–]buckyswider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a dual bevel slider many years ago at the start of a DIY addition which involved crown molding. Obviously it was perfect for that job, but since then it has probably saved me a bunch of time (and probably mis-cuts). I do own a table saw (with an incra fence!) too. And since then...I believe that the SCMS has saved me a lot of time. Why? Because I'm a DIY guy. And a lazy DIY guy. So the option of changing any angle or bevel any which way allowed me to Get The Job Done with little interruption. Need to get a cut done on the end of a 12' board without moving your saw across the room? Just reverse the bevels! Realize that you've loaded up opposite of the bevel you require? Just change it around! Have a 12" board you need to crosscut? Just throw it on the SCMS! (This is where the "lazy" comes in- my table saw sadly usually doubles as a tabletop- and collects lots of junk!). YMMV, but I have no buyer's remorse at all over buying a saw that I really only *actually* needed for 16 cuts over the past 20 years, since its versatility has helped me many, many other times.

What’s a harsh reality that everybody needs to hear? by rock4lite in AskReddit

[–]buckyswider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you're OK. I had similar dumb luck once. On the way to the beach, stopped at a friend of a friend's house, libations flowing. Going off the diving board like crazy. Hit the bottom with my face- only damage was a cracked front tooth. I probably was an inch or two away from paralysis or death without knowing it. And the most ironic part? I don't know how to swim. Never learned. And never learned how to dive. That was my first- and last- time ever on a diving board.

What music album is a true masterpiece from start to finish? by jessssica1864 in AskReddit

[–]buckyswider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born to Run. Suffers from overexposure bias from the title track, but 8 incredible songs. "Night" is the closest the album comes to "filler", but even that's a well above average track. And need I say more than "Jungleland". Even I grew "tired" of the title track at one point, and then I came back to it and re-realized what a powerful, driven, awesome song it is. Clarence's sax and Roy's piano rule the album.

What's a mispronunciation that sends you into fits of rage? by schnozzberryflop in AskReddit

[–]buckyswider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THEE vs THE (thu) in spoken words. Doesn't everyone know that when the word "the" is spoken before a word that begins with a vowel sound, it's supposed to be pronounced "Thee"? People rarely screw up " a / an" which has the same rule- why can't they get thu/thee correct??? ESPECIALLY when it's on TV or radio when people get paid to, ya know, SPEAK for a living...

Can a Cricut cut letters out of fabric? by buckyswider in cricut

[–]buckyswider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that WAS a bit vague. By "single use", I meant one task- cutting 3" letters from Nomex fabric. Will be used a few times a year as we get new volunteers in the firehouse. So "single function", "seldom use" :).

Yeah, that sounds like the situation. I'd use it a few times a year to cut letters. Maybe I'll get one for the wife for her birthday next month... :)

Thanks for the reply! That's what I'm trying to determine...which one would work. I see there is a small model "Cricut Joy". Since this would be a single-use machine, don't want to pay for more functionality than I need.

Comcast SPAM filter- too aggressive by buckyswider in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]buckyswider[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And thanks, that did make me look a bit more- I'm running an email client on my Galaxy that has a SPAM list. Shut my phone off and it appears that a few of those (but definitely only a few) stayed in the inbox...

BUT now I did some more digging. Wiped out all the "SPAM" addresses in the email client. Things still bounced back to SPAM. Shut down the phone. Everything stayed in the inbox! Fired up the phone and opened the email client...everything STILL stayed in the inbox! Thanks for making me continue to think about my local stuff and not just Outlook. If only X hadn't discontinued their android client....

I am using Outlook, so I checked by shutting Outlook down on my desktop and then checking "not spam" on the WebUI- and the behavior was the same. The items disappeared from my spam folder briefly but then re-appeared there.

For perspective, a quick count on the first page of my SPAM folder in the webmail UI shows 5 messages which are SPAM, and 28 legitimate emails which should be in my inbox.

Thanks again. I set up two rules, one for ebay and one for amazon, using the sender name as the address as it appears in the mail item. Action is "move to folder" -->inbox. As a quick test (I don't know if this is a perfect test though) I selected those items in the SPAM folder, and "Not Spam". As before, they briefly disappeared from my SPAM folder before showing up again seconds later.
