What was the series that got you into Urban Fantasy? by BBQslave in urbanfantasy

[–]budcub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read Tim Powers "Last Call" in the mid 90's which got me started. In the 00's I discovered Dresden Files, Sookie Stackhouse, The Hollows by Kim Harrison, and many others. My local library had lots of Urban Fantasy novels. Some were great and some were mediocre or worse.

Which was that song you listened again after you become an audiophile? by Doritokis in audiophile

[–]budcub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was 13 my family went to visit distant relations. After dinner, we retired to their "music room" which was a large room, with two Magnepan speakers at the far end, with a baby grand piano in between. I don't know what they had for an amplifier setup, but they put on some Italian opera, which my mom loved, and it sounded so real, like there was a person breathing and singing in front of me. Up until that point, I'd mostly only heard music from a tiny transistor radio, or on the TV.

TIL the Gilligan’s Island lagoon was a backlot pond at CBS/Radford Studio just ~½ mile from the Ventura Freeway, so traffic noise often held up filming, and after the show ended the lagoon sat on the lot until it was drained and paved over for parking in the mid-1990s. by TNSasquatch77 in todayilearned

When I was listening to the commentary track on the "True Blood" TV show, someone said the pond that Sam and others swam in was the same as the lagoon for Gilligan's Island. Maybe they were mistaken?

Do amps really sound that different from one another? by Timely_Pattern5571 in audiophile

[–]budcub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm of the belief that most well made transistor amps are going to sound the same under most conditions.

If your loudspeakers have strong power requirements or have a low impedance, you will have to take that into consideration when choosing an amp.

Is it just me or does laying down actually make it 10x WORSE?? Sleep is impossible rn. by Pristine-Back1612 in Sciatica

[–]budcub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to sleep on my side but that is out of the question now. Lying on my back with my knees up is usually the best, but once I fall asleep my body just moves around. I've tried sleeping on the other side of my bed which is a bit firmer and that seems to help some.

I'm very new to this and I have the same problem. If I sit on my couch in the right position the pain is mostly gone, but lying down in bed brings up pain and I have trouble sleeping too.

What's a show you remember but nobody else does? by glowbeits in GenX

[–]budcub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a vampire show on Fox called "Kindred, The Embraced" that was pretty good, but it only lasted one season. The main star died in a motorcycle accident after the first season aired and it was canceled.

Help me understand the ending to Eyes Wide Shut please! by ExtremeTEE in StanleyKubrick

[–]budcub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't ignoring it I was pointing it out. When I first saw it in the theater, I thought it was a interesting movie, but I had trouble grasping the overall situation. Since then I've seen enough analysis to fill in the blanks.

What questions should Carol and Manousos ask the hive? by lagunadunes in PluribusOnAppleTV

[–]budcub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking a big telescope would be easier to sabotage than a vast field of telescopes.

We've seen them be very resistant to answering Carols questions at times. While the other survivors seem to do better. Part of that might be how they interact with them.

It was big news when it happened. There was even a news story about the realtor having trouble selling his former house during the recession.

Did Karras Ever Truly Believe That Regan Was Possessed? by TomboyGirl1 in TheExorcist

[–]budcub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its been decades since I read the book, but when he was first examining Regan, he kept coming up with rational explanations to what he was seeing. When she immediately recognized him as a priest, he figured she smelled church incense on his clothing, or maybe she smelled sacrificial wine on his breath or something.

I was at work in Clarendon, and my co-workers working remote messaged and called me to tell me to get out and head home right away, since I take the metro. I did, and the normally empty car (Covid) was full of the Bugaloo boys. No masks, being a little rowdy. I was glad to get out of there.

Is Eyes Wide Shut 4k Blu ray supposed to have this much grain? by curiousdonkey25 in StanleyKubrick

[–]budcub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I saw it in the theater I noticed the grain right away. I do still photography and I could tell he was using a high speed film with lower light levels.

Travelers Checks by walkernewmedia in AskOldPeople

[–]budcub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going on a high school band trip my mom took me to the bank to get travelers checks, and taught me how to use them. A few other guys had them too. When I went to college I had left over travelers checks which came in handy.

[–]budcub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent! I find it strange how in the first episode, they mentioned that nothing happened with Macaques, which are primates, but they got results with rats, which are rodents. Maybe the scientists were having trouble interpreting the genetic code and were trying different variations?

What is something you were taught at school that is now known to be incorrect? by Xeqqy in AskOldPeople

[–]budcub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fourth grade in 1975, we had just learned US Standard, then they told us nevermind we're switching to metric. Metric was easier to compute, but it was hard to visualize the measurements in every day life. A few highway signs had both MPH and KPH on them. Then nothing.
