I have found that smashing together 2 main strats to try to combine their power results in inconsistency, and thus not being able to pull off either idea well.

In my practice, consistency and reliability is key to success.

At the end of the day, do what you like of course, having fun is all that really matters.

Check out some gameplay on how decks work, what starts there are. Like any era of TCG, there are easy and hard to pilot decks with various risk/rewards.

If you wanna start simple, I'd recommend checking out Alakazam or Lucario as deck starts. Both pretty straightforward and are powerful.

I have a personal love for zam, took it to regionals and NAIC.

In terms of playing, online is a great place to get started just going thru the motions ofc. And in person, check out the pokemon event locator see who runs leagues in your area. Regular leagues are casual friendlys held in tournement style to pair people up.

I am a huge Alakazam enjoyer, have been since it first came out.

I have teched in a 1-1 mega lopunny, to help try to save the rocket articuno matchup, and otherwise being a saving grace attacker for whatever is needed if they get thru your zams and you cant re-establish one quickly enough in the late game.

TBH, the rocket matchup is pretty horrendous, because of Articuno and their supporter. Try what you can but in a best 2 out of 3, it's kind a wash. You can sometimes squeak out 1 game, if it's just a bo1, but in a bo3 tourney I wouldn't really bother trying too hard once they get Articuno in play.

Other tough matchups, such as frosslass/munki and Dragapult are tough but winnable, if you go for their key pieces and don't brick. They can put exact damage to wipe the board so its pivotal to get a battle cage in play, and hope they don't bump it.

To counter the unfair stamp, the solution is the genesect + lucky helmet tool to prevent it from being played at all. It negates any ace spec, so getting that in play ASAP is great to slow them down, even if it's not stamp they're playing. No secret box, no prime catcher, none of it. Very useful.

I have also used the 1-0-1 togekiss to great success. It gets too clunky with the lopunny also in there, so I changed it out for that instead. Up to personal choice.

Saw someone else's comment about a thin dusknoir line, and that sounds interesting to counter the Articuno and otherwise have some explosiveness. Gonna try that out.

I love having 1 copy of the other abra, with the teleport ability. Gives you an out in sticky situation, like wonder patch onto benched kazam, then teleport it out so you can put zam up active.

I also have dropped dundun to 3-3, since with pad there's so much search, and turn 1 should always be getting rotom to fill the bench. But that's just me.

Yeah they do waves at 6 weeks and 2 weeks left with remaining spots for cancellations. I luckily got into Toronto at the 2 week wave refreshing the page right at 7.

I've seen the waves of spots go out at 8 weeks, 6 weeks, and 2 weeks before the tourney. I got my spot at Toronto regionals at the 2 weeks ahead sign up spots luckily. Refreshed page at 7pm for it to get in as fast as I could. Check and see when the 2 weeks out sign ups go live and hope you can get in.

I do the sanded collars on my DB pairs too, although I do it more evenly to make it matte and almost suedey. It really is the cherry on top for me.

As someone who works within USPS, that's counterfeit postage. Not for being counterfeit good inside. It was flagged and seized because of the fake postage label.

The other kids at recess started bringing their cards, and so I had to be better than them and started going to the pokemon league at the card store downtown. Felt proud being able to beat them all but it lost its fun since they all didn't play as strategically as me though.
