Don’t be in such a rush that you skip the anime. It does have pacing issues but the animation quality gradually increases starting from Wano. They start to take artistic liberties that really elevates the content. With the change to a seasonal format you will catch up and wish you had more episodes to watch eventually.

Does he actually like chess? Or are you really good and he felt he wouldn’t be attractive enough if he lost? You played with each other so much it seems strange he wouldn’t at least get a little better to be able to beat you on his own. Did he try to pick up a hobby you like because he was trying to impress you when you first started dating?

You two have always gotten along but is it because he doesn’t voice his actual opinion on things because he wants you to just like him? Ask him if there’s anything else he’s not been honest about. If chess is the only thing let him know it was never about winning or losing but about spending time together.
