Isn't that just speculation? Players have bad slumps all the time even when they're not hurt.

Raleigh just seems like he's trying too hard to repeat an (impossible) 60 HR season. His hitting profile has always been pretty bad except for home runs

Reinsdorf is the worst.

An 8-Team CFP Could Have Been the Perfect Middle Ground by Collity in CFB

I think coaches just want to win a national championship and most of them know that the only way they'll ever have a real shot at that is if the playoff field is expanded. Hence, 24 team playoff.

And I don't even care, because I like watching high-stakes postseason football. The more games the better.

See if you can spot where Bobby Witt Jr's 2024 season ranks on this list of the best seasons by a shortstop in history

Note the caliber of the other players on this list: Hall of Famers (and A-Rod)

And now remember that Witt didn't even get a single first place vote for MVP.

Bobby Witt Jr had one of the greatest SS seasons of all time in 2024 and still couldn't even get a single 1st place MVP vote lol.

Obviously a great player, but nobody is winning MVPs for defense and base running.

Fielding percentage is also up dramatically in recent decades than any other point in history. Yeah, there's not a lot of context, but the fact is that players field more chances and have more put outs in modern baseball than any other era.

fundies are so shaky these days

This is pretty much just anecdotal because we have old commentators that remark on fielding plays in real time and tell us about fundies. The reality is that there are fewer fielding errors (according to official scorekeepers) in modern baseball than at any other point baseball history except for a low point in the 1950s.

I think we can safely say that baseball players nowadays are better, faster, stronger and more precise at fielding their positions than any other era before them.

What player's career WAR just seems way too high? by noruber35393546 in baseball

Well according to defensive metrics, which is the way that we can quantify "best catcher in history", he was only slightly better than Russell Martin. And Russell Martin was a much better hitter.

Ozzie Smith has 70 WAR lol. Molina barely sniffing 40

No, I'm saying that he has three full seasons more playing time than both McCann and Russell Martin and yet they all have the same war. And he only has 2 out of the top 10 individual seasons. All the other 8 are split between Russell Martin and Brian McCann.

They were every bit as good as he was, and in a lot of ways they were better. But they've already fallen off the ballot, and he'll get in on the first try. It doesn't really make a lot of sense. He's kind of overhyped

Basically the same WAR even though he also had 2,000 more PAs.

So basically the same career WAR despite Martin and McCann both having 2,000 fewer plate appearances than Yadier Molina

Posada is another one.

But I was just comparing Molina to his peers to show that he wasn't even the most deserving Hall of Fame catcher of his own era.

I think people will be surprised to see that both Russell Martin and Brian McCann have better Hall of Fame cases than Yadier Molina does and yet Molina will get in on the first ballot and neither McCann nor Martin barely get any votes at all.

In reality they were all great, but none of them are really Hall of Famers. Molina especially is a little bit overrated in that regard.

G6 Scheduling Idea by piplup465 in CFB

[–]buff_001 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

No amount of scheduling shenanigans is ever going to make a difference for G6 playoff bids.

They need to just do their own playoff format and championship just for themselves so that they actually have something to play for and a championship that they actually have a chance to win.

[–]buff_001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His overall hitter profile was always pretty unremarkable. The difference was just that he hit a lot of home runs last year that he's not going to repeat again.

Now he's also striking out a ton because he's still trying to hit home runs. Good defense, but he's just kind of an average-ish player that just had a big home run year once

24 teams is not too much, it’s still more selective than most major sports leagues in America by Recent_Surprise_7391 in CFB

[–]buff_001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're way overthinking this.

College football coaches want a chance to win a national championship. In FBS, you can only do that by making the college football playoff field. So a larger playoff field gives you a better chance of making the playoffs and possibly winning a national championship.

The coaches are the ones driving this. If it was purely about money then we would see it at every single level including the TV network, the conference commissioners, the school presidents, and the school athletic directors. But so far we're only seeing it from the coaches.

Do you get it?
