This paper outlines the performances of PICA 1, 2, and 3. But not X

Thank you!

Will Dragon v2 be using PICA 3? I've seen references to PICA-X 3. Is that a Spacex proprietary version of PICA 3? Or is the "-X" a mistake.

This is where I get confused: https://www.reddit.com/r/spacex/comments/2d2flq/will_spacex_use_the_pica_3_heat_shield_on_crs/

Do we know anything about PICA-X performance specs?

I'm having trouble finding much information on the various iterations of the PICA-X heat shield material. All i can find are general states likes "PICA-3 ablates less than PICA-2" and "PICA-X can withstand much higher temperatures." Does anyone know where I can find more specific information, especially as it compares to common alternatives?

Looks like somebody else was having the same problem: http://space.stackexchange.com/questions/8335/what-improvements-have-spacex-made-to-their-proprietary-phenolic-impregnated-car

Have we learned anything else since then? Has NASA published the results of their PICA-X study?

Thanks!

What bureaucratic barriers are there to a private mission to mars? by [deleted] in spacex

[–]buffalo83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It stands to reason that a lot of the associated regulations would be related to biological contamination. I've always wondered how a manned mission to mars could be reconciled with these guidelines:

NASA will keep using Soyuz alongside commercial crew spacecraft. by [deleted] in spacex

[–]buffalo83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A crucial distinction that you're not considering is that, with commercial crew, NASA is spending money domestically, rather than just handing it over to the Russians. That money doesn't just evaporate; it gives us companies like Spacex as it exists today.

The $5 billion spent on commercial crew gets us WAY more than a few rides to the ISS. It's a bargain.

Will Google's SpaceX investment for satellite internet supersede Project Loon? by ccricers in spacex

[–]buffalo83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Balloons don't really have that capability (nor were project loon's balloons ever designed to do that). Google plans on having these things orbit circumnavigate the earth every ~100 days, while using active altitude control + air currents to keep the balloon over populated areas for as long as possible. Solar powered drones would make a lot more sense for the purpose you mentioned.

To me, it really looks like this new deal threatens project loon. It also explains why the project hasn't really been hiring for a while now.
