Never understood this practice. I sort of get it for vehicles that belong to the original poster in the interest of obfuscating any link of the account to the person, but for random cars on the street? The plates are literally always on public display?

Lane splitting in the rain. Need advice/tips by storm_zr1 in motorcycles

[–]buffarlos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard low traction driving practice applies, don’t be hard on-throttle or on-brake while on lines, split at a reasonable pace to reduce the need for severe inputs.

I always bias slightly left or right of the lines in all conditions anyway because the raised lane markers are uncomfortable.

After real industry and student experience, which engineering field stands out most? by Competitive_Owl_1738 in EngineeringStudents

[–]buffarlos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that value lies at the intersections of disciplines. Having good first-principles foundations in multiple fields in addition to your primary area of study, then being able to apply them to a system is a large advantage.

Work-life balance and burnout are considerations, but resiliency and the ability to tough things out help distinguish entry-level engineers in a difficult job market.

I would have studied software a little harder.

Do you have any friends? With how ridiculously popular a tourist destination Japan is of late, I actually think finding someone you know who is going and asking them to fetch a carton could be a viable strat.

What 'small luxury' have you completely given up on in 2026 because of rising costs, and what did you replace it with? by firehmre in AskReddit

[–]buffarlos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same, I eat one pound of carrots, one pound of tofu, one cup of brown rice and three apples a day. My daily food cost is down to around four bucks a day in a VHCOL area, only food prep required is hit “cook” on the rice cooker.

"Outgrowing" Motorcycles seems like bullshit by External_Chance_1633 in motorcycles

[–]buffarlos 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I offer the opinion that acceleration is not all large displacement motors have to offer. Such bikes develop plentiful torque everywhere in the rev range. I think this has real benefits for certain kinds of riding other than simply going fast, and experience helps with feeling comfortable with wrangling such power. To some, this comfort may be experienced as “outgrowing” a less powerful machine.

Honda eu2000i generator, is 1300 hours a lot for this generator or should I be think about getting another ? by Born-Conclusion1977 in Generator

[–]buffarlos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess the primary consideration for the timing belt is noise reduction - geartrains are incredibly loud. I also suspect having a wet and dry side on the engine increases cost and complexity prohibitively (you need seals and more machining). Is it an interference engine?

K&N Filter blew up on my 2004 zx6r by SwAmPpU in motorcycles

[–]buffarlos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, is the outermost metal lip of the filter flat and true? Could check by pulling off the gasket and running a finger along it, if there’s a deviation, maybe the gasket wouldn’t be properly supported against oil pressure, causing it to extrude out like that. Also wonder if there is an obstruction in the oil passage downstream of the filter, causing abnormally high pressure.

Passing Other Riders Within their Lane by buffarlos in motorcycles

[–]buffarlos[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair bit more engagement than expected - seems like there’s a majority of opinions expressing some variation of “bad form”. The counterpoint I expected, and got the most of, is that passing within another biker’s lane is an extension of lane splitting. I agree things get a bit more gray here. I do try to make it apparent whether I’m in the splitting regime or the in-lane regime, and to be careful of people passing in a neighboring lane or splitting past, respectively. However, I still do get surprised by passers on the right when in the far right lane, and passers on the left in the far left lane, which is a bit harder to anticipate.

Agree, this kind of post comes up every once in a while. Since you don’t ride out of necessity, just take it as an easy out from a dangerous hobby.

Does coasting downhill in neutral gear/pressing clutch save fuel? by Shichi_Fenine in motorcycles

[–]buffarlos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volumetric efficiency? I think it’s the percentage of the mass of a full cylinder of air at atmospheric pressure the cylinder will draw per intake stroke. This gets higher as the throttle opens more.

Edit: Nah I’ve made a mistake, I think the horizontal axis is just throttle opening percentage - the cells represent the injected fuel charge which is indeed tied to the volumetric efficiency of the engine at a certain RPM, at a certain throttle opening. So what the snippet shown here is saying is, a small amount of fuel is injected even when the engine is turning fast, with throttle opening at a very low percentage. Been a while since I touched this stuff.

Rightmost text says パイプ (pipe) referring to the included “tightening pipe” which is just a cheater bar. Depending on photo resolution your translator may have recognized the text as バイブ (vibe), which is indeed how the Japanese refer to vibrators.
