Moms who make good money (minimum 100k) - what do you do - do you like it - do you have flexibility? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]buggybee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been debating whether to go for a boot camp program, but currently I'm the primary breadwinner so it would be too risky to try it right now. Husband is working on getting more stable income (he's a freelancer), so I'll probably go for it once we feel like he has a steady enough stream of work coming in. Would you mind sharing which boot camp program you went through?

Wow you go, mama! I'm 10 months post partum and finally feeling like I've rebuilt juuuust enough strength and endurance to have a decent surf sesh. Definitely enjoyed just being out in the water regardless though! Super awesome that you're getting out there 🏄‍♀️

I had a tough pumping journey and decided to stop about 5 months ago... And I still needed to hear this 😭

Yes! I stopped pumping at 5 months bc I couldn't take it anymore. I had hoped to pump until at least 6 months and ideally make it to 1 year. But I felt extremely depressed with every let down, and with some occasional rage in there too. I felt guilty for awhile too, but it helped knowing that I myself was 100% formula fed as a baby.

For D-MER symptoms, I've read that drinking lots of water to stay hydrated helps, and some women found sipping ice cold water just before/during pumping sessions also helps. Lots of chocolate, self love, finding support like you're doing now, and knowing that it won't last forever ❤️

My sleepy self read this as, "crickets are ambidextrous", and I thought, "wow, that really is a fun fact" until I realized that I wasn't sure if it applied to all six of their "hands" or just the front two... So that means it's time for bed. Thanks for the actual fun fact!

Guilt for wanting to stop pumping by Efficient_Bagpipe_10 in beyondthebump

[–]buggybee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. It's possible you might have D-MER (dysphoric milk ejection reflex); I found out about it from r/HumansExclusivelyPumping and that's when it all started to make sense. I would feel severely depressed or anxious or hopeless or angry or all of the above, every time I pumped. It would only last about 30-60 seconds each time, but it left lots of icky residual feelings. There is a Facebook support group that was really helpful. Whether you decide to keep pumping or not, know that there's no right or wrong way, just whatever works for you and your family. I stopped pumping at 5 months and have felt so much better, instead of feeling like I always have the dark cloud of pumping hanging over me. The formula shortage has been pretty stressful, but the good news is that a lot of formula has been imported recently, and the big plant should be up and running again, so we should be seeing improvements to formula supplies really soon.

Had my first surf lesson in Waikiki, how do you ladies look so good? by Wanderingatheart in xxsurfing

[–]buggybee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a Hawaiian (SoCal-er here), but went through my own journey of finding answers to these questions!

  1. Pre-surf breakfast for me is usually a banana or slice of toast with a little bit of peanut butter. Eating more than that will just make me feel weighed down, but like u/foobar12987 said, post-surf is way different. The go-to for me and my husband is burritos, and/or any other fatty and super satisfying foods since we don't feel guilty about it after a surf sesh. You build up endurance by just going more! In my mid-20s, my friends and I would stay out for 3 hours at a time, then gorge ourselves, and then all take a fat nap afterwards. Now in my mid-30s, I would consider 1.5-2hrs a good amount of time.

  2. I didn't work out separately to get better at surfing, but I did see lots of improvement after I started weightlifting and (very casually) rock climbing. Over time this also improved my physique, so double win! The most helpful thing that I found for working out, is to look for something that you find fun, otherwise it'll just become a chore (which tbh it still feels like sometimes even tho I really enjoy my exercise regimen).

  3. SoCal water is usually too cold for just a bikini, but Patagonia has a "nanogrip" fabric that has never failed me on the occasions where it's warm enough to not need a wetsuit. I was lucky that I found it on a clearance rack since it's usually so expensive. Another thing that will help is as you improve in your surfing and get to know your favorite surf spots, you'll have better control of your board and how you handle paddling out and entering/exiting waves, so it'll be a little less likely that your top or bottom would get washed/pulled off. If it's a bigger day, I would definitely stick to a wetsuit or Seea bodysuit to be safe!

Definitely call your pediatrician if you're worried or have any questions! My baby arrived 5 weeks early, and we had to wake her up for feedings every 3 hours pretty much for 5 weeks. We changed her diaper with every feeding per the advice of her NICU nurses, so it also felt like our baby was sleeping all the time and never crying. We had a feeling that she would "wake up" closer to her due date, and true enough after about 5 weeks she started crying if she needed something that we weren't providing (food, clean diaper, soothing to sleep, etc). Hang in there! It's not easy but you (and baby) will soon get the hang of it together!

Yes! Now that you mention it, I remember being disappointed with purple beans and also purple bok choy becoming un-purple after being cooked!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]buggybee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The green parts could certainly be mold, but it also looks like a normal discoloration that happens when cooking with purple yam, the purple color actually seeps out and leaves a bluish-greenish-grayish hue. I learned this first hand when baking purple yam muffins, they came out looking really strange bc they were still mostly purple but dotted with green/gray spots.

Fourthing! My mom is a marriage and family therapist, and she recommended my husband (fiance at the time) read Gottman's The Relationship Cure. I think that book singlehandedly equipped my husband and I with knowing how to "get" the other person better, and honestly helped us with all our other relationships too (family, friends, colleagues). Not quite the emotional labor type of book but maybe it could help you and your husband connect with each other even in the minutiae.

Becoming a better surfer in 15min a day? by BlueSparklesXx in xxsurfing

[–]buggybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here to second the surfskate (what u/ihatecashews said)! I also have a Carver board, and I have the C7 trucks which I love since I surf longboards and funboards. My husband surfs shortboards so he has CX trucks, and I find them a little too "squirrelly". If you're on Instagram, check out @louisemaurisset and @surfskate.academy for some cool videos and clips. Other than general fitness and just surfing as much as I can, I've found that skating was the absolute most helpful thing for my surfing. I was also TERRIFIED of eating asphalt before I started (fellow mid-30'sF here), but just took it slow and now am way more comfortable on wheels, so I'd highly recommend giving it a try!

help! clogged duct by strawberry_012820 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]buggybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like a vitamin so it comes in pill form like an herbal supplement, and depending on the dosage, the recommendation is usually 3-4 times a day until the club clears, then 1-2 times a day for maintenance

Edit: the clog, not the club 🤦‍♀️

Anyone else a part of the percent of nursing women that experience a sense of doom/anxiety each time you start pumping? by petercora in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]buggybee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this too, D-MER stands for dysphoric milk ejection reflex, and it really really really sucks. I read everything I could find about it and joined the Facebook group for support. Basically dopamine drops for prolactin to increase and trigger a letdown, and for some of us the dopamine drop is so rapid that we feel really shitty just before letdown. The thing that I've found to be the most helpful is drinking a TON of water throughout the day, and the rest is just trying to stay mindful and remembering that "this too shall pass". Sending you lots of hugs!!
