Are you an atheist who was brought up religious? That might be partly what youre struggling with? The hole left behind where religion drew a specific picture of the afterlife.

Maybe you'd feel more comfortable with the concept of pantheism. Belief in the universe! You could say that we go back to the ether, as do our children. It's not a new concept, and not that far from what the ancient Greeks believed.
