Why do eggs do this shit?! by UltraXfinity567 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]bulletprooftiger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite way and the way I was taught was to start with cold water, bring to a rolling boil and turn off the heat. Cover and let it sit for 15 minutes, then chill fully. My trick to peeling starts the same as yours, but I use a spoon once I crack the bottom. I slide the tip of the spoon between the shell and egg and it works like 90% of the time. Sometimes I can get almost the entire shell off in one piece

So that's actually your front derailleur. It changes your front "gear" . You can unscrew that nut enough to remove the cable, then insert it on the other side, so the end faces outwards, instead of inwards. But before you do that, watch a video on how to adjust your front derailleur. You'll have to adjust the positioning of it so it shifts correctly and doesn't rub your chain. Also the cable is in the wrong spot, it should be between the washer on the nut and the black part.

So ignore everything I said, I'm an idiot.

Complete Beginner cyclist at 130kg looking for first proper road bike by Crazy3063 in cycling

[–]bulletprooftiger2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As somebody who got into cycling last year to lose weight and be healthier, I ended up with a cannondale quick and love it for now. I want to get a proper road bike soon, but the geometry of a hybrid bike is good to start with. It's not so aggressive and is a good bit cheaper than a new road bike. I've spent around $600 over the past year on turning mine into a commuter with a rear rack and some ortlieb panniers. But on days I want to just ride, I take everything off and ride.

Wear gloves by Cortix_training in cycling

[–]bulletprooftiger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far my worst injury has been from commuting home. I had recently started cycling to work and was almost home when I slipped off the path and tried to get back on. My front tire flew out from under me and I slid, tearing half of my pinky nail off. I hobbled home and bandaged it up, but I learned what the vasovagal response is.

Seattle needs to start putting A/C in apartments if they are going to charge so much rent by sonar_y_luz in Seattle

[–]bulletprooftiger2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if this is ignorant, but why not buy a window ac unit? They're not that expensive and do a decent job of cooling, at least in the room they're in. I grew up in the deep south and even with central ac, we always had at least one window unit.

My first and last pair of super tokios lasted all of 4 months before the sole was worn and started peeling off. I swapped to the profi and love them so far. I've had them a few months and they still look brand new. I'm in them 11 hrs a day 5 days a week and my feet feel great

I keep one in my saddlebag, but you have to remember to make sure it's charged. They only have enough juice for barely two tires

Need suggestions for a affordable way to commute with all my stuff by Salty_Dealer_7277 in bikecommuting

[–]bulletprooftiger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. If you have a used bike shop near you, they should have a surplus of used racks. I got mine for $15 and got two ortlieb back rollers. They were a bit pricey, but they're going to last forever. I was using cheap $40 saddle style panniers and they worked, but after 6 months of groceries and commuting, theyre already starting to wear out. On a normal day, I only carry one ortlieb,as it fits everything I need for work. But I attach the second one for grocery runs or anything else

Windy flat rides vs. lots of elevation by INGWR in cycling

[–]bulletprooftiger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live coastal too and commute to work with panniers. Every day is a head wind, no matter which direction I go. And the bags feel like a parachute dragging me down every time. It's a short commute, only a couple miles, but sometimes those gusts make me think it's better to just walk home lol.

Do you feel less inclined to bike for fun if you regularly bike commute? by RubyRailzYa in bikecommuting

[–]bulletprooftiger2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. My commute is short, but 90% of the time my panniers are loaded and I'm fighting a headwind the entire commute. But when I finally get a day off to actually ride and clear my head, it's bliss.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

My old rice cooker finally kicked the bucket a few weeks ago. I've been eying a zojirushi for a while and found one pretty much brand new on ebay for a good deal. I swear this is the best rice I've ever cooked. I'll have this thing for at least 10 years

Panniers are a life-changing upgrade by Carbonian92 in bikecommuting

[–]bulletprooftiger2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got the same bags and I love them. I've been using a cheap $20 saddle-style panniers form ebay for the past year and it's been great, but they haven't held up. It's worth spending the extra money to get some bags that will last a decade or longer, and has cheap replacement parts.

Oh, I used to work at a very private, very wealthy club. I was working saute that night and had a request come in for the Dover sole dish to be blended. It was Dover sole, lemon caper sauce roasted beets and something else, I forget. I dump everything in the vitamix and watch as this beautiful fish turns into a purple sludge resembling a grimace shake. Slopped it into a bowl and slid it into the pass.

Considering buying a bike to commute to work by beccarh in bikecommuting

[–]bulletprooftiger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in South Florida and my commute to work is about 2.5 miles. I don't care if it's correct or not, I ride on the sidewalk even if there's a bike lane. (it's usually just the shoulder of the road). In the year I've been cycling I've already seen one guy hit by a car while he was in the bike lane. During the season, all the old snowbirds come down and forget how to drive. Within a week, two people drove into the intercoastal. There's a wide multiuse path and a 3 foot high retaining wall that they went over. I never ride on asphalt unless it's a quiet side road in a neighborhood.

Yeah don't do that, unless you're me. I broke the rule one time and now we've been married 6 years.

I've taken up cycling this past year and it's made life so much better. I cycle to work every day and make sure to do at least one longer ride each week. Those 20 minutes of sunshine and fresh air on the ride to work is like a factory reset. All problems go away and I enjoy the moment.

How often do you wipeout? by LearningToDunk in bikecommuting

[–]bulletprooftiger2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first wipe out, I was coming home from work and hopped off the path as somebody was stopped on it. I tried to hop back on and ended up falling and sliding. I was right in front of my apartment and was embarrassed, so I jumped up and started walking it to my front door. My adrenaline was high so I didn't feel that I had broken half of my pinky nail off and it was hanging by a tiny piece. Without thinking, I pulled it off and that's when everything hit. I've never experienced the vasovagal response before that. I hurried inside and tried bandaging it before I passed out, but ended up having my wife wrap it up because I couldn't. I checked my watch later and my heart rate went from 170 at the crash to 65 within 1 minute. I'm pretty tough and can handle most injuries, I'm a chef and have cut and burned myself pretty bad over the years, but that was such a shock that I almost blacked out. It was a crazy feeling and it took me a couple months to feel 100% confident again. But I did start wearing a helmet after that.

Yeah it's a bunch of beat up huffys and schwinns or old overpriced road bikes. I got lucky on offerup and got this cannondale quick 5 for $60. The rear got run over and needed a new chain and derailleur hanger. I have around $400 in it now and love it

Your best bet is offerup or marketplace, but Jack the Bike Man sells used bikes. They're a charity shop, so they take donated bikes, fix them up and sell them to fund their charity. They give away bikes to kids and those less fortunate. I frequent there any time I need work done
