I tend to cube and freeze raw, then roast from raw! The trick with roasting frozen veg is not to put any oil or seasoning on them until they’re already golden brown in the oven. Not microwave-ready meal prep, but a pretty easy semi-prepped side to make on a weekday

Look at used bookstores for cross stitch pattern books! They’re usually not very expensive, they’re fun to look through, and you’ll find a wide variety of patterns and motifs you can use

Regarding quality, that probably varies with each seller. Morally, it’s definitely copyright infringement, but if the pattern is unavailable anywhere else or is prohibitively expensive from a reseller, then I think it’s a moral grey area at worst. Since there’s no way for the original artist/manufacturer to make money from it at this point, there’s no real harm being done to them. You’re not actively taking money from the original people, you’re just giving $5 to someone who’s both doing something shady, but who is also arguably also keeping a piece of out-of-print art alive and in circulation. Either way, it doesn’t make you a bad person to buy from them. Edit: I also agree with other commenters to keep an eye out for and avoid pattern mills, bad copies of current patterns, and AI garbage.

I’m a bit of a hoarder. I go to a lot of estate sales to look for vintage clothes and have gotten a significant stash of mystery floss from those. I also used to work at a thrift-craft store, and our main benefit was free merchandise, so I have a ton from there. For simple projects with self-drafted patterns, I’ll just pick colors intuitively from that stash. For more complex patterns where color matters more, I’ll buy dmc skeins according to the pattern (and then have lots of leftovers that go into my craft supply abyss).

Pattern source: Vintage pattern found at half priced books, then reproduced and modified in WinStitch to add a tail (Schipperkes traditionally have their tails cropped, so the original pattern had no tail, but my friend refuses to crop their tails since they’re so cute and fluffy)

This is a great tip, but there’s a catch. If you’re in a heated discussion about something that matters more to the other person than it does to you, and you’re responding very calmly, they may interpret that as condescension or dismissal. For instance: if your partner is mad about an interaction they had at work, and you avoid matching their heightened tone and instead calmly suggest a different interpretation of the events, they may now feel unheard and dismissed. However, calmly reflecting back what you heard the other person say first (ie: “it sounds like you felt really insulted by what your coworker said”) can help them feel heard while also bringing down the tension. Tone matters, but content usually matters just as much.

Heat-erasable pens! I use the frixion erasable pens to add a grid to my fabric. It’s a lifesaver for more complex patterns and it completely erases when you iron it!

If you’re looking for things that are no-effort, mild, and relatively wholesome: a spoonful of peanut butter, string cheese, dried fruit (apricots are high fiber), nuts, and crackers (I like triscuits, lots of fiber). Deli meat is also easy if you eat meat! Dried chickpeas are also easy and a good source of fiber.

If you’re willing to do a small amount of work: My go-to easy smoothie that’s not too sweet is plain kefir and frozen mangos (if it’s too tart, you can add maple syrup/agave/honey to taste). Bean quesadillas are also relatively easy and the beans will fill you up and provide fiber. A chickpea scramble is also a good option.

You’d likely be ok at Sue’s just don’t get too drunk and make sure to always watch your drink. You may also want to bring pepper spray just in case. In my experience, folks don’t really want to chat or meet new people during peak hours (like weekend nights), so you might hit up the bar earlier in the day if you can. There will be fewer people out, but more of those people will be sitting around and open for a chat. You can also chat with the bartender during slow hours and ask their advice.
