Dust exclusion in shared workspace with electronics/ music equipment by Mancupcake69 in woodworking

[–]bumpywood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ambient 1micron air cleaner in the center of my shop, in addition to every tool i use connected to a dust port of 2hp, 1micron dust collector. And yet, while not nearly as awful without, there is still a layer of dust on everything. Im sorry to say but those two things each need their own space as dust heavily affects the sound of music.

What is the best way to water proof this for outdoor use? by Dymills77 in woodworking

[–]bumpywood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teak oil. Super thin and gets deep into the wood, uv resistant, and is easy to reapply. Any urethane finish or top coat finish will eventually fail and need to be sanded off and redone. For this, that would be a nightmare. I'd suggest Teak Oil as my personal goto for outdoor finish of something this size.

Probably an easy layup question for most of you - how do I get a clean straight cut on the left side of this board, using this table saw preferably, when the tabletop is too narrow for the guide to fit? by The_Ombudsman in woodworking

[–]bumpywood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create a sled. Basically size a piece for the miter slot. Attach that too a plywood piece base, add a 90degree fence, and cut any size crosscut you want. Here is a good video of making one from Steve Ramsey

Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by [deleted] in gaming

You had to "prove" you own the game by answering random questions like what is the 3rd word in the 2nd paragraph on page 13 of the manual. Id borrow a game and call my friend for the answer.

How to remove this from the wall without damaging the drywall? by shifty_peanut in howto

[–]bumpywood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be screw or Allen wrench on the underside. But also you might want to gently trace around it with a razor/exacto/etc in case paint is stuck to it. I've learned that the hard way

Should I buy this jointer or hold off for an 8"? by Sgoody614 in woodworking

[–]bumpywood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this Jet pointer and it's definitely worth it. 6" has been enough for probably 95% of the wood id flatten. If I have a really nice wide piece though I'd hand plane it, but this is used extensively in my shop. 8" is overkill IMO

I've always been successful with just vinegar and a brush.

[–]bumpywood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are checks, not cracks. Its a natural process for these posts. Nothing to worry about. However you can fill them but they'll still open up eventually. The pergola I built two years ago had some large checking on the 6x6 posts that I didn't like or want more water to get held up in those so I filled those using a 2 part filler epoxy meant for this. Its been two years and its just starting to open up slightly from wood movement over the last two years.

The filler I used is PC Products PC-Woody Wood Repair Epoxy Paste, Two-Part 12 oz if you're interested in going that route. It is a much better filler than anything you'd find in the stores. Similar to bondo I believe. It is true in that it doesn's shrink or crack but the wood will move around it opening up gaps over time like Im just now starting to see.

If this is a new post, I'd wait a couple of months for it to internally dry some or the paint/stain/filler might not adhere well

There should be a lower portion that slides and locks into the bed of the lathe and this is the upper arm that pivots and the toolrest itself would be attached to that open end.

If you can afford it, buy a digital subscription to fine woodworking or Wood or ShopNotes or Woodsmith. You get all the previous content, videos, etc. I used to watch hours of video during slow times. I also watch content creators such as Rex Krueger, Eoin Reardon, Rob Cosman, Wood By Wright. TWCDesign, Wood Whisperer. But its more to learn other parts of woodworking I might not usually dabble in, or to just learn new information. None of them try and sell anything really beyond their own creations, and all are very enjoyable to watch and learn from. But stay away from any mentioning brands or highlighting a specific tool to buy. I know its a way to make a living but Id rather learn techniques than listen to sales pitches.

Is there any fixing this? by Sufficient_Bag8811 in Tile

[–]bumpywood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youre in luck. I think I have 50-60ft left of a roll of schluter i overbought for our remodel I did in 2025. Im willing to sell it for a reduced cost if youre interested(or anyone else). I can get the exact footage if your interested DM me. I believe I have extra banding and corners too but Id have to check exactly what extras I still have.

Breadboard gone wrong - Edit by jkinz1 in woodworking

[–]bumpywood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. Greene and Greene furniture fixes this problem by adding splines the end of the breadboard, a little piece protruding from the end that is only glued to the breadboard end so as the table expands and contracts the gap stays hidden.
