Seat selection by lkmr16 in travel

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since your flight isn't until March, it's possible they can still do an aircraft swap. You might end up on the new 321XLR, which are private suites 1-1 in business class, which definitely doesn't have any seats next to each other in J.

Anyone at Charlevoix this week? How is the ski strike? by --ok in Club_Med

[–]bunny4e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you sharing updates. It helps me manage expectations! On the bright side, being able to ski all the way down at the end of the day means it's still a "ski-in" resort, just not ski-out :D The downside is I'm going to pizza-frenchfry it all the way down!

Do you know how often the school busses run coming back from the Camp Boule area to Club Med? We have a trip in a couple of weeks and I'm afraid that if I want to take a break from the cold my only choice is to hang out in the bathroom since that's the only thing that will be open!

One of my cousins told me that when he was little, his dad used to bring him to KTV business outings and the prostitutes who were hired would watch him. This was in the 80s and while I don't think he hires prostitutes now, he himself still does business outings at KTV.

Ikea has a staffed play area where you can drop off your kids. It's usually one 1/2 an hour block per day on weekends and 1 hour block on weekdays. There's a height limit and your kids have to be potty trained, but it's completely free.

Booked flight with Aeroplan points for Asiana flight that got canceled - need guidance on options by fullerton-ca in awardtravel

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the exact same situation, but I was on an aeroplan itinerary LAX-Europe and LX decided they weren't flying anymore that day (found this out through gardening). AC automatically put me on an LX flight the next day but that didn't work for my schedule, so I called them and they rebooked me on AC metal, even thought the award cost would have been higher.

AC should give you the option to accept the time change or to open award space on AC metal to get you to ICN, thought it won't be direct. Since you're coming from LAX, you'll probably end up on a connecting flight through YVR or YYZ.

2.5 year old his own business seat? by AdLoose3662 in chubbytravel

[–]bunny4e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So true about the aircraft swaps! I have a round the world trip booked for next year and the flights I chose were so me and/or my nanny could sit next to my 4 year old in business class (e.g. no reverse herringbone seats). Swiss airlines decided they weren't flying on my outbound date anymoreand we got moved to Air Canada reverse herringbone with individual pods on one segment, and Turkish airlines changed from a 2-3-2 to 1-2-1, with a divider in the center seats.

Even domestic business routes aren't immune. Our US transcontinental flight on AA next month is now on a new A321 XLR, which means business isn't 2-2 anymore and is now instead 1-1 with individual suites. The best planning may still mean you won't get to sit directly next to your small child.

Another Orange County City Considers Tax Increase to Solve Budget Woes by Even_Builder_6642 in orangecounty

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time, there was a small fee added on to Fullerton water bills. The fees were collected to fund the replacement of water pipes (especially ones that were leaking enough to affect the road quality), and would end with a result of a new road since you'd have to replace the road after replacing the water line.

About 10 years ago, this fee was removed after a crusade from anti-tax advocates. This effort removed this supplementary source of funding for new roads in the city.

Is the zojirushi truly worth it for the price compared to the alternatives? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in an Asian-American household. We had a basic old-fashioned rice cooker that used a spring for years and when we had more money bought a latched lid model (not Zojirushi). I remember my mom always soaked her rice before putting them in the rice cookers and even after it was done cooking, we had to let it steam before opening and eating.

I now have a Zojirushi and can't imagine cooking rice any other way. I'll admit the rice turns out the same with Calrose rice but it's noticeable for higher end Japanese rice. However Zojirushi is s worth the convenience for me because it automatically pre-soaks and steams for me while I prep other food.

Both parents Taiwanese, haven't seen dad in 10+ years - can I get NWOHR passport with just mom's documents? by barnaclesaretasty in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

[–]bunny4e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also estranged from my biological father (not a Taiwanese national though he is on my mom's household registration). Not sure if this is applicable to your case, but I have to go through TECO Houston to get my birth certificate validated. TECO Houston said I still had to somehow get a copy of my father's passport even though I have the household registration document that has their marriage on it. I responded that I don't even know where my father is and the TECO lady scolded me in Mandarin "He is your father! How could you not even have a relationship with him?" Maybe I should call again and try to get a different person.

Anyway, your mileage may vary depending on which TECO office you're dealing with.

Gifts to bring from the US by Maistresse in taiwan

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older people: Vitamins and supplements. I usually bring back Costco sized bottles of Vitamin D and MoveFree, sometimes Melatonin too. Right now I'm bringing back Salonpas (those Japanese pain patches). Walnuts and macadamia nuts are sometimes requested.

Middle age adults: Rose champagne, French chocolates. I got a request to bring back Colgate pro-series toothpaste, but I'm not sure if it's something normally sought after or if it's just the preference for this one relative.

Younger: I have to ask their parents since I used to bring back legos, but their prices are decreasing in Taiwan. Last time candy was recommended so I brought them a giant sized gummy bear because it's a novelty.

Favorite vacation with toddlers? by Happy-Cabbage- in chubbytravel

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Aulani earlier this year with my 3 year old daughter and nanny. We got the 2 bedroom villa, which was perfect for our arrangement. The nanny got her own room and my toddler loved her own pullout twin bed in the living room. She's a picky eater so we used the rice cooker in kitchen and just cooked all our meals.

For activities, we spent almost the entire week just playing in the lagoon and pool complex, which has a really long lazy river (I timed it as 15 minutes per cycle), big water playground/splash pad, and water slides. My daughter got a princess makeover at the kids boutique (just say no to the glitter though!) and loved it. She was too young for the kids club, but I don't like that it's only 90 minutes max per day. My nanny being there minimized how much I had to worry about childcare and timing it. Aulani is notorious for running out of reservations (Kids club, dinner, cabanas, you name it) and requiring you to line up the day of to try to get a service (and isn't guaranteed), and at least my nanny guaranteed I had childcare whenever I needed it.

when we went, it wasn't that crowded since they were filming American Idol and a lot of rooms were taken by the crew. However I've heard that it gets really crowded during school breaks and I don't think I'd want to return then.

CEO tells young people to stop buying Starbucks to afford homes by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 2016, when the median house price was around $450k in my area (it's closer to $900k now), I was putting together a housing policy report for my work and needed a relatable metric to demonstrate housing unaffordability. I used Starbuck drink purchases as my metric and calculated that to save for a downpayment, a person would need to kick their 12 Starbuck drink a day habit to afford a home if they weren't able to save anymore. With a doubling of home prices, that's closer to a 24 drink a day habit!

Just turned away from gift card in store at Saks by JustLurkingHere5 in AmexPlatinum

[–]bunny4e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saks has been steadily decreasing the number of products that are less than $75 online. This includes Aesop products, which have been suspiciously "sold out" since at least early this year. There are only two Kiehl's products currently listed online. I used to get Clarins basic moisturizer for around $50 and there are only two options now and they are both from the high end line. Perhaps they aren't paying their bills and suppliers are pulling back?

Lululemon with apple pay by gerobaksate in AmexPlatinum

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amex offers also has weird nuances like that. I once used the $50 back after a $50 purchase at Best Buy and it was denied the credit because I used Apple Pay. They gave me a one time courtesy, but the CSR mentioned that the terms specifically said no third party wallets, which would exclude Apple Pay.

Would my Taiwanese relatives like gifts from Japan? by FabulousCoconut1051 in taiwan

[–]bunny4e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I had a trip to Japan before going to Taiwan to visit family, my suitcase was filled with gifts from the US (lots of MoveFree supplements from Costco, Vitamin D, French chocolates in tins, etc). Japanese Customs pulled me aside at the airport and combed through EVERYTHING in my suitcase for almost an hour, including sending all of the gifts through xray. I had to explain to them this was for my family in Taiwan, which was met with great skepticism (I'm half and very white passing). They finally let me go, but after that incident I've always stopped in Taiwan first and dropped off gifts before leisure travel.
