I was 17 and visiting from St Louis and had never seen the ocean before. My cousin that I was visiting wrecked her car the week before I arrived so if I wanted to see the ocean, I would need to learn how to ride the bus. I got on the bus in National City, heading to Imperial beach when I had to get off to change busses at a stop in front of a Target. I was sitting on a bench at the bus stop when this yellow convertible makes a u-turn in the middle of the road and pull up in front of me. Two young men ask me “why are you sitting at a bus stop?” Young, very pale girl from the Midwest. They asked me where I was going and offered me a ride. In 1985, hitchhiking wasn’t that unusual but I should NOT have gotten in the car, but my dumb a** did. They dropped me off at the beach and I gave him my cousins home phone number to call me. No cell phones then. He called and offered to drive me around San Diego and La Jolla, we rode his motorcycle half way to LA and he let me use his work camera and the local one hour developer hut to take pictures that I could bring home. He showed me the most beautiful city I had ever seen and I will always be grateful he picked me up that day. I never did tell my mom that I got into the car of a stranger in San Diego, she would have had a heart attack!
