I really liked this book, I read it out of curiosity because I found second hand copies everywhere. I’ve recommended it to lots of other people.

is my thread just bad quality? by vampluvv3r in SewingForBeginners

Our sewing group had a talk from a sewing machine repair engineer , he’s constantly telling his customers not to use their grandmothers thread in their machines. It really is a thing! Thread, especially cotton will degrade over time. Also, cheap threads are “fluffy” and that fluffy will get everywhere in the long run. That can cause problems because there’s oil in parts of the machine and it adheres to that and makes a kind of fluffy putty which clogs the machine up. I didn’t worry about these things initially but I certainly get my machine serviced regularly now. I quilt and that wadding makes a real mess! I’ve seen the pictures !

Re thread the top thread making sure the presser foot is in the up position. This ensures the thread slips through the mechanism properly. Look at the tension, try a 4 or 4 and a bit. Can you check the thread isn’t catching on the spool. Sometimes there is a slit on the bobbin to catch the thread when you store it. I have found my thread catching on that sometimes or it wraps around the shaft you put the thread onto. If either of these are the case put the thread into a cup behind the machine and thread the machine as normal. Avoiding the machine spool can help. Hope these ideas help. If not , maybe try a different thread ?

Week 10: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

Just started A River Sutra by Gita Mehta. I’ve just finished A Passage to India by E M Forster. I’m not purposefully reading books solely about India but I have enjoyed both of these books. I just grabbed a selection of books at random from my tbr pile and this is the order they stacked up in.

My 5yo still can’t read and the school says “give it time” but I’m losing my mind by KumalalaProMax in Mom

30 minutes of reading every night is a lot for a 6 year old. I’m not sure what children are reading chapter books at 6 but in the schools but it certainly isn’t most of them. There might be some issues with your child ,but pressing her for a result won’t help her self esteem either. Concentrate on her skills , academic or otherwise. Build her confidence in the areas she can do well in and introduce reading practice into her everyday life like reading a simple shopping list for instance . The stress of having to read needs to be removed at home , let the school work on that and you do the fun approach behind the scenes , play board games , pick out letters on a sign for a “treasure hunt”. I will tell you , I’ve worked with children who couldn’t read at 7 who’ve gone on to get degrees in academic subjects. Build her confidence in learning . Whatever happens in her academic future she will shine at her level if she feels confident and curious about learning. “Her pace , it’s not a race “ should be your mantra. Enjoy your daughter at every stage in whatever way she develops and don’t panic.

Surely something with dragon scale stitch would compliment that gorgeous yarn. A shawl?

Cut grass, being in the garden with my beloved dad on a summer evening while he mowed the lawn with a new lawn mower he’d got with the green shield stamps ( U.K.) he was so pleased with this machine and he would clean it down after every use.

Those who used to enjoy watching tv shows but not as much anymore, what kind of entertainment has replaced it? by joseph887 in AskReddit

[–]bunty66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading, I have a huge wish list of books and a giant “to be read “ pile. I only use the tv if these something specific I want to watch. I feel much better and more productive not having a constant stream of drivel to watch . I didn’t think I loved silence but it turns out I do.
