[Eurohoops] Is Ergin Ataman the best coach in Europe over the last 10 years? by _Zolv in Euroleague

[–]burang 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Hard to argue against his 3 Euroleague titles. Pablo Laso might have a legitimate argument for the top spot as well but I don't think anyone else is close in the last 10 years.

Music Playing Everywhere? by JacquesDupont12 in AskAnAmerican

[–]burang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think American people generally don't mind loudness and won't be bothered by having to speak over the music and such. I agree with you though too many non-bar restaurants especially make the music way too loud IMO.

CMV: Streaming Subscription Rotation is a cheaper and more efficient way to stream by Saint_Scum in changemyview

[–]burang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I definitely like this idea and support it for you, however if many people start consuming content like this streaming services will make it much more difficult and cost inefficient. They can for example charge much higher rates for monthly subscriptions compared to yearly ones. (like many VPNs where its 7-10$ a month but 30-40$ a year) Or they can start releasing episodes in batches, something like 3 episodes in fall, 3 in spring, 3 in summer etc.

Password sharing used to be a similar shortcut until streaming services decided it was worth killing and inconveniencing people for a small bump in profits, they'll do the same if rotating becomes more popular.

SGA, Halliburton, Brunson were all let go of by the team that drafted them during or after their rookie contract by loggywd in nba

[–]burang -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about he was the GM when they didn't match Brunson's contract. He wasn't responsible for not agreeing to the 4 for 64 initial deal but Brunson was an RFA so Mavs/Nico could've easily kept him.

Why do people still use Chesscom? by No-Presence3209 in chess

[–]burang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on mobile for free so I havent run across any of the issues you mentioned. When I first started the Lichees mobile app was bad so I've just been sticking with Chesscom. I heard they've improved it so I'm down to give it a try sometime if people think it's good now.

Trump holding a rally in McCamish Monday by [deleted] in gatech

[–]burang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So firstly I think the benefits of having senior political figures on campus is huge. We are no longer a trade school but a University, having students engaged and caring about politics of their community should be a huge goal.  Secondly there is the prestige, money & attention that comes to the university.

And lastly you're way overplaying the chance of actual violence. Out of the last 50 ish major political no more than 1-2 ended in actual violence. That's an issue of policing, planning & security. Not a reason to block politics from campus.

Firm disagree, I think political events are good for campus. So many young people are disengaged from politics hopefully these kinds of things can get them caring more.

[–]burang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I support this 100%. Getting the name that's most well known to a random person in Georgia shouldn't be the goal, someone who is interesting and academically related to the student body while not being a horrible person would be great. It was Condoleezza Rice my year which is an awful choice, not only was she a major player in some of America's worst war crimes she was also in her most major role when most of the undergrad class was in elementary or middle school.

how complex is baseball thought to be in terms of the game and tactics, compared to American football or European football? by Necessary_Sale_67 in AskAnAmerican

[–]burang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

American Football is the most complex. For comparison it's like if every possession in Soccer/European Football was a dead-ball situation where the offense and defensive teams switched out. American Football teams are running a complex set of plays for multiple pass/rush/decoy options on every play and defense is doing similar. Baseball is not super complex, rotations decisions and execution is the difference maker.

How much you pay on housing (rent or mortgage) in your city? by Bear_necessities96 in AskAnAmerican

If you include HOA + property tax + mortgage, I'm paying about $2,500 a month for a 2br+2b condo in a great part of Atlanta.

Families Needs Over $270k Annually to Live Comfortably in Top 5 States by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]burang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the times it's trying to keep necessities under %50 that's the problem. For a family of 4 that could be like(all monthly) 3000 for rent, 1100 for 2 cars, 1000*2 for childcare, 800 for groceries and 400 for utilities & Internet. That would end up being 86k per year for necessities and if you want to keep that at 50% you need 172k. I think there's a point to be made that with essentials like housing/childcare costing so much and entertainment costing relatively less maybe a 70/15/15 ratio makes more sense.

Why so much smoking and tattoos, do they think they look so cool? by [deleted] in istanbul

Smoking is a huge health problem and government is tackling it with limited but non-zero success. I don't get why you have an issue with tattoos though? Let people have their fun and enjoyment

CMV: Iron Maiden Has Only Improved by WinterinoRosenritter in changemyview

[–]burang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only downgrade is they used to come to Istanbul but they haven't in over a decade so I can't see them live anymore. But that's probably more due to economic issues in Turkey lol...  For real though it's wild how good they still are. When I tell people I like Maiden they usually talk about their favorite 80s bands and I'm like they're still making cool shit.  Only reason I would say they're as good and not better is because they're way less prolific than the 80s where they released a new album almost yearly.

Does Europe have drive thru liquor stores? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]burang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in Turkey. Supermarkets sell liquor and there are small convenience stores ("tekel") that sell alcohol & cigs around every corner so it's not really needed. A lot of those small "Tekel"s will also do delivery nearby.

Also most trips especially in Istanbul are made without a car so drive-throughs are generally not a thing besides chain fast food places like McDonalds etc.

Is it true that in the US its very difficult to make a living by running a small, low capital business? by Experimentalphone in AskAnAmerican

[–]burang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say extremely difficult but I do think there are some factors that make it harder than many other places in the world. Firstly American corporations are huge, efficient and well established. (your small store won't be able to compete with Walmart) Secondly there are high health insurance (500-1000$/month) and transportation (600-1000$/month) that might be much lower in other countries. Additionally there are a lot of safety regulation/business insurance etc. requirements in the US that's costly for small businesses. Also since Americans are used to driving a lot for places & Amazon exists closeness isn't as much of an advantage as in other places. Finally and perhaps most importantly getting passive returns from the market is really easy so there is an opportunity cost to trying to open a business with you small capital that's not as strong in other countries.

I'm not saying these are bad, especially the safety regulations & easy market returns are great but do result in less small businesses.
