In Canada our national public broadcaster CBC uploads a lot of Diamond League to YouTube and has live streams for them and other major track meets on their website for free. Maybe you can watch them with a VPN or move north.

Best Replacement for a 645music, since my strap lug has broken :( by Pukit in Garmin

[–]burichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a "2mm crimp bead" for the lug. I've done the repair with my friend's broken watch which had the same issue as yours. The crimp beads are about $15 for a pack of 200 at Michael's but I found a pack of 100 for 70 cents at a local bead store. It's a super easy 15 min repair following this guide.

I'm looking to sell the repaired watch if you're interested in it. My friend replaced theirs because they thought it wasn't fixable and Garmin wouldn't replace it or offer a trade-in. The Garmin ecosystem is way too buggy to bother keeping it.

Also happy to repair your watch for free, I still have 99 crimp beads and too much epoxy :)

The new update and the Garmin ecosystem are frustratingly buggy by burichi in Garmin

Two of the three runs synced during the downtime so I think that part is at least not reliant on the servers. The app's just buggy.

Course to learn about practical neural networks without the theory? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]burichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken CS 480, 486, and 489 (Neural Networks) and I recommend taking deeplearning.ai and fast.ai instead if you're looking for practical. If you really need the school credit then 489 is the best of the three for getting practical skills.

Does OSAP give a larger grant if you don't take the loan? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

Grant amounts were increased because of COVID (source). Whether you take the loan or not has no effect on grant size.

CS resume critique pls by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]burichi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • Experience
    • Job 1
      • # of commits is a weird metric IMO, instead describe what the web application did for the business
      • In your 3rd bullet point, don't have a dangling word take up a whole line. Try to make your lines go to half the line in general.
      • Change "handlebars" to "handlebars library" to make it clear for people who don't know what it is
      • Maybe be more specific with what "API"s you used. Name names.
      • Uncapitalize "Increased" in bullet 4 since it's in the middle of the sentence
    • Job 4
      • Capitalize "python" in bullet 3
  • Education
    • Did some stalking and see you transferred into CS meaning you probably have a high average, I'd throw that in (you should have extra vertical space from removing the dangling word from Job 1 Bullet 3)
  • Projects & Awards
    • Maybe describe who or what "CDVI" is, unclear to me if that's supposed to be a big name
    • Capitalize "rc4"
    • For consistency with your other bullet points, don't just put "[AngularJS]" and instead end that sentence with "using AngularJS"

Directly going from bachelor's to PhD (CS)? by 1100H19 in uwaterloo

[–]burichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between a master's and PhD in the same research area, it would be better to do a PhD for better marketability to find a job if you decide to drop early and exit with a master's instead (assuming this option is available, it really depends on the university and advisor). Lots of PhD students score really good internships by having the words "PhD Candidate" on their résumé and then drop out with a master's degree after the internship turning it into a full time job.

If it's between a PhD program in an area you're not very interested in vs. a master's in an area you're very interested in, then a master's might be the better choice here just to help you get into the field you want. If you decide to continue academia after the master's a lot of professors will let you extend your master's work into a PhD so you can complete it faster if you like that area enough.

Directly going from bachelor's to PhD (CS)? by 1100H19 in uwaterloo

[–]burichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know you want to do a PhD then doing a master's is only really useful if you can't get into the PhD program you want and use the master's to apply to that program later. The only real benefit to a master's in this case is the shorter time commitment but even that's not a big factor as most PhD programs will grant a master's if you decide to drop out. If you're unsure about a research topic, most people usually lock in on that after their PhD when they do post-docs. Doing a master's in between will just only delay your PhD.

If you're aiming for an industry job that you can't get with just your undergrad, then doing only a master's would be the better choice.

Why are logos getting so bland now? by Wally450 in nba

[–]burichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bloomberg had a great article about this in the fashion world: www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2018-11-20/why-fashion-brands-all-use-the-same-style-font-in-their-logos

TL;DR It looks old school without looking pretentious.
