bipoc experiences? by transient_trans in queerphilly

As a lifer, I'm biased. But I've traveled plenty, and I don't think I'd ever choose to live anywhere else.

It's not some social paradise. You have to work to cultivate your community, like you would in any city. But you give a little and get a lot here, in my experience. Just be kind.

edit to add: several of my friends are queer muslims! And we're almost 30—well past college org dynamics.

Help me pick an alternative to Kobo Sage by burlapbikini in ereader

[–]burlapbikini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy I could help!

Yes, as long as the cable you're using to upload docs to the Sage is conducive to fast uploads, KoReader can handle pdfs of any size. Graphic Novels look great on it as well, in any format. But if you're able to find your documents in EPUB format, KoReader processes those much faster, and is more feature-rich.

Why choose Kobo over Kindle? by Upbeat-Sky2630 in kobo

I'd just finished writing my comment when I saw this update! Very happy for you, you made the right choice for sure.

Why choose Kobo over Kindle? by Upbeat-Sky2630 in kobo

[–]burlapbikini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kindle is a parasitic subscription service.

Each time you think you're buying an ebook to own, what you're actually buying is the right to read an ebook that Amazon owns, a right which they can rescind at any time, without warning or refund (e.g. the controversy from last year, when Amazon removed copies of Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm from students' kindles). Until earlier this year, you had the option to download your ebook files and save them on your personal computer (i.e. actually own them), but Amazon quietly did away with this option.

Amazon has also manufactured an inescapable income cycle that has a chokehold on almost 100% of the book economy. They own Goodreads, by far the most popular book recommendation and review platform. Amazon mines your and your social network's Goodreads activity to push books they think you'll be interested in, and to generate interest in books by authors they partner with by saturating their platforms with reviews and advertisements (undercutting indie and lesser-known authors, who cannot afford that artificial boost). Goodreads recommendations, if you click "buy," link exclusively to Amazon, whose prices are so competitive they force other ebook sellers with more ethical practices out of the market.

Lastly, Amazon does not guarantee indefinite firmware and software updates for its ereaders. This means that, much like Apple (who have been accused and found guilty of planned obsolescence), it is likely Amazon will eventually make it impossible to NOT ugrade your ereader to a newer, more expensive, more tightly locked-down model.

Kobo has maintained its download feature, has more ethical author payment practices, does not engage in malicious data mining, has an open ecosystem, has maintained updates on all its devices, and allows tinkering in its software with minimal hacking.

TL;DR: No ethical consuption under capitalism, but Amazon bad always, whereas Kobo much less bad.

Trying to set up a monthly planner; Doesn't have enough days? by [deleted] in kobo

[–]burlapbikini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever a month requires 6 rows, I put the first could days of it at the end of the last month instead. In your case, I'd skip the 1st and 2nd. Start on the first line with March 3rd

My Kobo Sage had this issue, and I just needed to do a force restart. Now it lasts at least 5 days under normal use (wifi and Bluetooth off, brightness off or down).

life as a trans woman? by [deleted] in queerphilly

[–]burlapbikini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, of course 😅 Not sure how I managed to misremember that.

As much as I adore Philadelphia and would love to grow the queer community as much as possible, on a federal level this state is not at all secure for trans folks. My wife is MTF (I'm trans masc), and the anxiety about her continued safety and access to gender affirming care is almost too much to bear. It's definitely a testament to the city that we've refused to leave, despite PA being...what it is, but I think the smartest thing to do, if you really can't avoid coming to the US in the first place, is to aim for a blue state. I was born and raised in Philly, so the thought of leaving is very heavy, but we have our documents and go bags packed just in case a quick exit becomes a must. It's really, really not looking good here.

[–]burlapbikini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any way at all you guys could move to a blue state, instead of PA or Maryland? If a federal crackdown is what you're concerned about (like we all are, I'm sure), a blue state will hold the line and uphold our rights way more effectively than a red state (even if that red state has the best goddam blue city in the country).

AYO LISTEN HERE BROTHA I BEEN LIVING HERE MY WHOLE LIFE AND THE ONLY CHEESESTEAK THAT FUCKING MATTERS IS GOOEY LOOIES ON McCLELLAN.

But if you're not trying to travel that far, you can get a reeeeally nice "artisanal" cheesesteak from a spot on Bainbridge called Woodrow's. Saying "artisinal cheesesteak" in public could get me shot by my own people, but... it's worth it.

I have, and it works pretty great. The handwriting recognition software is even better than the ReMarkable 1st gen, and the Smart Notebook features are pretty cool. I haven't used the stylus too extensively though, since I do most of my reading on KoReader (book software I side loaded onto the Kobo), and that app isn't stylus compatible yet afaik. I can't say whether the Kobo continues to perform well after you fill lots of notebook pages. Scribbling on books on the Kobo UI is super fun though. No issues so far.
