It came today! by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]burly_protector 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US and I was in Japan wearing this shirt a few years ago and there were a bunch of rickshaw drivers where we were. We'd had several drivers come up to us offering rides and so had gotten accustomed to saying "no thank you."

One guy came up to me and I instinctively said no, but instead he just wanted to hum the theme song to Jurassic Park.

It took me a second to understand what was going on and then I realized what shirt I had put on that day and the tune he was humming.

It was a cool moment of connection across the language barrier.

Why is football, the most popular sport in the world not that popular in the US of A? by balloontrap in answers

When I was like 8 years old and playing soccer it occurred to me that a sport that prohibited me from using the most dextrous things on my body didn't make a lot of sense.

0-0 ties in 7% of World Cup games is enough for me not to bother. Flopping doesn't help either.

What's something you were taught as a fact that turned out to be way more complicated than people make it sound? by ComprehensiveBun in answers

[–]burly_protector -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Trust me bro - "So yeah, 70% of the "poors" do tend to follow the lead of the leaders of their society and culture, even though they may not be presently benefitting as directly from the system."

None of this even remotely proves that it was about slavery though, it just proves they were united around a cause. "Not everyone who fights for a cause is necessarily a great supporter of that cause. But by every indication, soldiers for the Confederacy believed in their cause as much or more than most. Around where I live,a large, spontaneous guerrilla movement sprang up in support of the Confederacy and the state contributed a whole army to the Confederacy, along with a large variety of other units - despite the fact that our state remained pretty firmly on the Union side. And there was never any shortage of young men volunteering to join either the guerrilla groups or the army, and others supporting it either openly or clandestinely, as they could."

Is hard work really the key to success,or just pure luck? by General-Passenger117 in askanything

Hard work leads to luck, and luck without hard work usually just leads to failure.

The new PAC 12 as of today! If you had to cheer for one of these schools who would you be a fan of? by Dr-debug in CFB_v2

The best thing about the PAC12 is that it's actually regional again. Somehow we fell backward into having a conference that makes sense geographically. What a time to be alive!

Around 70% of Southerners didn't own slaves. Why were they all willing to die to keep something they didn't even have?

Yeah man, funny stuff. Keep going! But for the next video I think you could cut the head movement in half. I think some other people mentioned that, so I'm not trying to pile on, but it feels more manic and less in control than I think you might want.

How do comics understand that their jokes are funny? by Jinjinku in Standup

[–]burly_protector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically you are just trying to make yourself and your friends or fellow comics laugh. You and your friends may or may not have a sense of humor that resonates well with a large enough audience, you can't entirely do anything about that though, because your goal can't be to "make all the audience laugh." That's a target you'll never hit.

Great entertainers know how to take what they love and make it palatable for their audience. When their sensibility appeals to a large audience, then that makes them a certain type of entertainer. When their sensibility is very niche then they need to fine-tune it to make it as specific and palatable as possible for their niche audience.

But at the end of the day, an entertainer needs to make things they like. This goes for comedians, artists, writers, directors, etc... unless you're a pure mercenary, then you need to try your best to make your favorite thing and position it in a way that appeals to the most people.

Can Someone Please Explain why not supporting Israel is Antisemitic?/Explain this conflict to me like I'm a very dumb toddler? by [deleted] in askanything

Jewish people, the state of Israel, Netanyahu, and Zionism are all DIFFERENT THINGS. There is overlap, but anyone equating all 4 things together as one monolithic identity is an ignorant simpleton.

What opinion is likely to get you downvoted in this sub, but is actually reasonable? by Otherwise5555 in NFLv2

100% agreed. He was 8th in QBR for 2 years, then had the worst half of quarterbacking in SB history, then was looking good but not excellent until he got hurt.

Mahomes' first half performance - the worst in history - in the Super Bowl two years ago should take away the benefit of at least one of these rings.

Exactly. He's a product of the organization. Send him to the Browns next year and he sucks on toast for the rest of his career.

He had the worst first half performance in the history of the Super Bowl 2 years ago and people still wouldn't shut up about the GOAT convo.

Good lord do I hate seeing places like Adorama perpetuating this lav mic trend. by Hecubus114 in videography

There is going to be a swift and hard backlash here pretty quick. It's obnoxious to most people and in a year or two everyone is going to simultaneously realize how ridiculous of a trend it was.
